Lawmaker mistakes Bernanke for Paulson at hearing Thu Jan 17, 2008 4:56pm EST
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur came to a House committee hearing on Thursday prepared to ask U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson tough questions about his involvement in the subprime mortgage crisis.
Unfortunately, she was questioning the chairman of the Federal Reserve.
The Ohio Democrat, at a House of Representatives Budget Committee hearing, said she wanted to know what Wall Street firms were responsible for the securitization of subprime mortgages.
She then asked: "Seeing as how you were the former CEO of Goldman Sachs ..." But the only person testifying at the hearing interrupted.
"No, no, no, you're confusing me with the Treasury Secretary," said Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.
"I've got the wrong firm? Paulson, Oh, OK. Where were you sir?" Kaptur said.
Bernanke noted that he was head of the Princeton University economics department.
"Oh, Princeton, oh, all right, sorry. I got you confused with the other one ... I'm glad you clarified that for the record," she said.

Another case of someone rising to the level of their incompetence.
“I’m glad you clarified that for the record,”
Sure. The Guinness Book of Records category for stupidity.
No wonder the stock market is plunging. Congress has no clue and Bernanke needs to go back to Princeton and stick his nose in a book.
Four letters. D, O, L and T.
IMO this wasn’t as funny as when Congr. Waters, some years ago and probably in the context of the Enron fiasco, referred to some financial shenanigans by “Solomon Smith Barney Frank”. That had me (and the folks behind her in the gallery) going pretty good.
Forth paragraph. She’s a Dem. Although if they hadn’t mentioned it, we’d still know she’s a Dem.
Is that our Reuters? Leaving out Bernanke’s gently making fun by answering that he’d been CEO of the Princeton Economics Department? That was the punchline to the story, and they cut it out.
They left out "(D - OH)". (This is not a joke.)
Having demonstrated her ignorance, she continues on the demonstrate her arrogance. It is getting deeper and darker.
Suppose you were an idiot and suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.
Mark Twain
This is the problem here in Ohio.
That’s pretty funny (for a non-joke).
And this is how her office spun it, conveniently leaving out the comment:

How did I know she represents my in laws?
If it’s a hypocrat, this is what people see from them ALL the time, if they pay attention close enough. Problem is, no one’s paying attention in their constituency, and when it’s brought to their attention by an outsider, they squeal “right wing conspiracy”!!!!!
Like when Ray Nagin allowed parking lots FULL of buses to sit instead of having them moved to higher ground when CLEARLY everyone knew Katrina was gonna pack an historic punch...well that was all Bush’s fault.
Republicans do it all the time as well. The difference being, for the most part, it’s the exception vs. the norm.
I once wrote a letter to John Linder about a former employer of mine that took our health insurance premiums we paid through the company for our family health insurace, but they took the money and ran (literally and the CEO and CFO are now in a Fed. pen for medicare fraud, unrelated to my situation) and left us holding the bill for our youngest’s delivery.
He sent me a long letter in reply about...get this: all the problems with medicare. Alot of gibberish about how things should be vs. how they are...a complete useless waste of time. Most likely he didn’t have squat to do with the letter but it was pawned off to an assistant to “handle”.
Talk about adding insult to injury!
I don’t know what’s worse frankly, the fact that we’re misrepresented or unrepresented. I see all those DC plates about their whining they have no representation...sheesh I’m thinking they should be damned GRATEFUL for that!
It’s just a nightmare of more beauracracy, which is of course paid for by the people. Their salaries and all the damage they would do...and they want to pay for making things worse?
Hard to wrap my head around that!
The Stupid Congressional Award Winner is still Texas DemocRat Sheila Jackson-Lee. During a visit to NASA, while looking at photos taken by the Mars Pathfinder, she asked NASA officials if the Mars Pathfinder had photographed the flag left behind by Neil Armstrong.
English Translation: "How DARE you point out my stupidity in public? I'm going to block all of your funding, as soon as I figure out what agency you are with!"
