Rush Limbaugh and Fred Thompson
National Ledger ^ | 01/17/08 | Chris Davis

Posted on 01/17/2008 11:23:00 AM PST by Route66

...You can hear it in Limbaugh’s voice and see it in his face. He badly wants to throw the full weight of conservatism behind that candidate. He so desperately wants to that his teeth probably hurt. He’s waiting, waiting for someone to take the lead. Get noticed. He’s waiting for someone to give him the go ahead to cream the opposition.

You can hear the excitement in Rush’s voice when he talks about the South Carolina primary. It’s “The Passion.” The passion of conservatism emerging when he talks about that primary. Why, you ask? Because, for the first time since the primaries have begun, conservative Republicans will be voting for fellow conservative Republicans...

...Rush Limbaugh believes in conservatism. It’s engrained in his soul. He introduced me to it, and now it’s engrained in my soul. I can recognize it like a tick on a white dog. It’s as obvious as that.

I recognize it in Senator Fred Thompson, and so does Rush Limbaugh. He’s hinted, he’s implied, and he’s even begged conservatives to see what he sees in Fred Thompson. He sees conservatism, the same kind of conservatism he saw in Ronald Reagan. He doesn’t want long, bloated policy. He wants simple, effervescent conservatism for Americans to unfold before their very eyes...

Actually, I don’t really do any shilling for Mitt Romney. If you look carefully, I never come into a thread and say “Go Mitt”, or “Vote for Mitt”, or “You should stop supporting your candidate and switch to Mitt”.

I confine myself to responding to attacks against Mitt. If people stopped attacking Mitt, I wouldn’t post anything about him.

Posting factual information is not attacking. I haven't followed you from thread to thread, but if you are considering that attacking, what's the difference in shilling and what you do?

I think it might be true that Rush thinks that Fred is a little more conservative. But that doesn’t mean it translates to that he thinks it is imperitive that Fred be the nominee. I think Mitt Romney is a conservative. He has the experience to implement the conservative agenda. Mitt looks and sounds presidential. Just being conservative is not enough, a good candidate must have the executive experience needed to implement the conservative agenda. Hundreds of thousands can talk like a good conservative. But how many have the executive experience to make it happen?

“So, you’re saying that Fred Thompson is a liar.”

I don’t understand why you are acting so offended. I have read many posts telling distortions and outright lies about Mitt. If a person is willing to dish it out, they should be able to take it. It’s only fair.

First, not everything posted about Mitt is factual, and often what facts there are are used in fallacious arguments or without regard to the context and circumstance.

Further, using facts against someone is still an attack. And attack is any time an argument is presented as to why a candidate should not receive a vote, as opposed to presenting an argument as to why a candidate deserves support.

There is nothing shameful about an attack in and of itself.

Of course, I don’t spend much time answering facts I agree with. And I spend much more time countering statements of opinion with facts that would oppose that opinion.

You’d have to define the word “shilling” for me to make a rational answer to your question. I consider shilling when you come into threads, whether they are about your candidate or not, in order to tell people they should vote for your candidate, or not vote for their candidate. Sometimes they make spurious attacks on candidates, or post threads attacking other candidates with the purpose of promoting their own candidate, often through taglines and cute ping list quotes.

BTW, I have nothing against people who do shill for candidates. I skip their threads, I ignore what they write, it’s easy enough to do.

My goal has been to try, for all of our candidates, to keep misinformation and misleading use of facts from harming the viability of our candidates. One of them will be our nominee, and as much as possible, if we are going to have to support them against an Obama or a Clinton, it will help if we have already dissected any rational-looking but false arguments.

It’s like what factcheck.org does, but they are better at it because they can spend money. If they had more time on their hands, I could just link to them. Today they had a great debunking one of the charges leveled against Romney by a Huckabee ad.

Huh?

Please go back and find where I have ever once posted anything offensive or even negative about Mitt Romney. You won’t find it- because I’ve never done it.

I’m not “acting offended”...I was asking the poster to clarify the position he took stating that Fred is just there to take votes from Huckabee to benefit McCain..

Wonderful editorial and I have sensed the same from Rush. I think he would be happy with either Thompson or Hunter, but knows that Hunter simply doesn’t have the name recognition and without that he can’t gain any momentum.

Rush seems to feel he may be forced to settle for Romney, but he’s not the clear conservative among the front runners. He’s made it clear he’s not happy with Mitt’s leftward leanings.

Bingo!

I read your statement that Rush is a consummate professional to mean that he is not interested in damaging his credibility (earning power) on air by endorsing a candidate who has yet to show that he can attract significant support. Not a knock on Fred, just an observation.

Yep. The only reason.

Sorry Chris. I’m not a Fred supporter. You can take me off your fred list. :-)

Duncan Hunter is the guy I’me voting for (even if I have to write in his name)

>> What is it?! What do people have against Fred? <<

I have nothing against Fred personally, I'd have no problems voting for him over the Hilderbeast.

I do have a problem with Fred's supporters, of whom 90% of which rant and rave that you HAVE to support Fred because he alone is the God-given savior to conservatives and the reincarnation of Ronald Reagan, and any person running for President not named Fred Thompson is a "liberal", "RINO", "socialist", etc. (except that Duncan Hunter fellow, but only if he agrees to be "Fred's VP" and do whatever Fred tells him to. Otherwise he's a "protectionist" and "spoiler")

Even a proven conservative leader who's "record" on conservative issues is much further to the right than Fred's will be called a "RINO sellout" if they fail to "get behind" Fred with an endorsement and blindly worship everything he stands for. Suddenly, people who have carried the water for the conservative movement for decades like Tom Tancredo and Robert Bork are all "traitors" in the eyes of Fred's fan base.

The "MY way or the highway" attitude of the Fredheads isn't winning their candidate any converts. Quite the opposite, actually. I'll vote for their guy if he wins the primary. Too bad they're not willing to the same.

Fred Thompson has to make it on his own.

Yep. Definitely.

I am convinced Rush, as he has said, is ok with three of the candidates. If he were to throw his support behind any one of them now, and they don’t get the nomination, then the nominee would be the 2nd choice and would be damaged. Rush is right to wait until after the nominee is chosen to throw his support to that one so as to give him the BEST possible chance to beat Hilary or Obama.

Yes indeed.

The RNC does not want Fred or Duncan in the race and the elite NE Rino’s don’t want them either.......The RNC is about broke; but they don’t care; it is about moving the party to the left and be dem lites.

You can add Huckabee to that list. If Fred won Iowa and was leading in SC, the elites would be bashing Fred now and propping up Huckabee or Hunter to split the vote.

Nothing wrong with Hunter. It’s just that the only people that know his name are people at the conservative base. I’m sure Rush would mention his name more had he been noticed more.

I’ll remember not to ping you for Fred related stuff. But I’m not here to push Thompson on you. I just write it and let people make up their own minds. I hope Hunter does well.
