Rush Limbaugh and Fred Thompson
National Ledger ^ | 01/17/08 | Chris Davis

Posted on 01/17/2008 11:23:00 AM PST by Route66

...You can hear it in Limbaugh’s voice and see it in his face. He badly wants to throw the full weight of conservatism behind that candidate. He so desperately wants to that his teeth probably hurt. He’s waiting, waiting for someone to take the lead. Get noticed. He’s waiting for someone to give him the go ahead to cream the opposition.

You can hear the excitement in Rush’s voice when he talks about the South Carolina primary. It’s “The Passion.” The passion of conservatism emerging when he talks about that primary. Why, you ask? Because, for the first time since the primaries have begun, conservative Republicans will be voting for fellow conservative Republicans...

...Rush Limbaugh believes in conservatism. It’s engrained in his soul. He introduced me to it, and now it’s engrained in my soul. I can recognize it like a tick on a white dog. It’s as obvious as that.

I recognize it in Senator Fred Thompson, and so does Rush Limbaugh. He’s hinted, he’s implied, and he’s even begged conservatives to see what he sees in Fred Thompson. He sees conservatism, the same kind of conservatism he saw in Ronald Reagan. He doesn’t want long, bloated policy. He wants simple, effervescent conservatism for Americans to unfold before their very eyes...

Fred is not going to win S.Carolina; he’s too far back in the polls. If I lived there, I would surely vote for him, but the “handwriting is on the wall”. He’s going to be at least third in this primary and I don’t think he can hold on much longer. Rush is not going to endorse him or anyone else as choosing someone would lose him listeners; Rush is in the radio business and he won’t sacrifice listeners; his livelihood is first with him and this is not a criticism of that; it’s just the way it has to be.

Romney is the best choice and Tancredo believes that, too. Romney can win against Clinton or Obama. Vice-Presidents are chosen to ensure getting the electoral votes from that state so that usually means the VP will come from a state with many electoral votes. Regardless of that, I’d like to see him choose Duncan Hunter.

Gov. Rick Perry endorsed Giuliani early on, which I think was a plea for Giuliani to choose him as VP. Perry has a book coming out in February to promote him as an ultimate conservative and I think that is also to get him on the VP list.

I’m sorry.. but Fred Thompson has to be the MOST DISAPPOINTING GOP Presidential candidate in a quarter century...

Fred thought he could be lazy..not really campaign very hard in Iowa...New Hampshire..He didn’t even announce his campaign until AFTER the important Iowa Straw Poll...

IF Thompson has campaigned with a modicum of urgency..and instead of saying things like “I’m not really interested in running for President”..a...

IF Thompson had put the effort into building grassroots support bases in these early states...

IF Thompson showed the tenacity and fire that marked his term as a Senator in the Congress.....

IF he had done ANY of this..he’d likely be the front runner right now..

Fellow conservatives...lets face reality here.. Fred Thompson IS NOT the candidate we thought he was...

3rd in Iowa...5th in Michigan...and 6th in New Hampshire...this are NOT the results that a potential NOMINEE needs to have in order to capture the nomination.

The Fred Thompson Campaign will be summed up with these words..”If Only”....

Don’t try to blame anyone but Thompson himself.. Thats why you’re seeing people like Limbaugh and the like trying to “Rush” to his aid...

If Thompson is already having to rely on Rush Limbaugh to come and save his candidacy....well..is this really the BEST candidate to take on Hillary/Obama?

None of the quotes at that reference support your claim.

The only quote that comes close to supporting your claim is the one from 1994, when he said he supported the AWB that was being passed in 1994.

In fact, he does not more strongly favor a gun ban now, he has said that now that the AWB expired, he does NOT support re-introducing it. He does support the 1934/1986 restrictions, so he won’t be trying to repeal them, but neither are any of our other candidates.

South Carolina is in 2 days. Fred is working hard to win that state.

I should think that we could at least wait until after THAT state is done voting before we start writing post-mortems?

Just go negative in the name of the Lord.

The worst thing in the world Fred can do is drop out on Saturday. This campaign Season has had so many twists and turns that who knows what will ultimately happen. I still believe it is anyones game no matter what happens Saturday. Don’t give up the fight.

I don’t know. I heard him on Cavuto’s show, and he sure sounded pretty convincing that he’s in the race for himself, not for another candidate. And he was specifically asked about McCain.

His lies and pandering go way beyond a meek and wimpy rendering of NT writings. But you wouldn't know. As long as he wears his alledged Christianity on his sleeve and shouts "Jesus" thru a bullhorn" that would seemingly be ok with you.

He is not dropping out unless he chooses to, and there have been no indications that he does. He has the support.

The game is fully afoot...

You’re missing my point, sir..

Fred SHOULD HAVE been working hard in ALL these states...

Latest Rasmussen Reports poll today shows Thompson a distant 4th behind McCain, Huckabee and Romney....

This is a state that Thompson HAS to win in order to stay alive..in order to have ANY sort of momentum and fundraising in order to go into SuperDuper Tuesday..

Finishing 4th isn’t going to do it...

There is enough alternate media though to get his message out through. Plus more debates like the last one, only aiming at McCain rather than Huck.

I’m bashing Huck and not Christians. The fact that you take it personally says all I need to know about you.

“It’s getting to where if you really believe the important thing is to stop McCain, you almost have to hope Huckabee can beat him. But then you have Huckabee as a winner. Not good, not good at all.”

McCain has done well in the liberal states where independents and democrats can vote in the Republican primaries. That won’t happen in S, Carolina. Unfortunately, S. Carolina does have a high percentage of active/retired military that don’t appear to be getting this right. So I don’t see S. Carolina as the only place to stop McCain.

Even still, in this recent poll, Fred is only 8 points away from the lead in a 5 way race. If other candidates were to drop out, the dynamics of this race will change quickly and dramatically.

Its key that we support Fred with time and money so that he can stay in, regardless of his place finish. Huckabee and Guiliani could be out before Super Tuesday.

McCain lost S Carolina 8 years ago in a 2 man race. I won’t be impressed if he wins now in a 5 man race, with less percentage than he had 8 years ago.

Face it, a 5 way race is tough all around.

No matter what this is a very exciting campaign and the twists and turns are very interesting. A political science majors dream.

Yes, McCain must be beaten, so must Huckabee. I won’t vote at all if either of those candidates receive the nomination.

If the “alternative media” was doing any good for Thompson..he’d be winning some states here...

One good performance in a debate DOES NOT make a nominee...Thompson’s a LAZY candidate pure and simple..and like any student who procrastinates on a school project til the last possible minute..and then scrambles to finish something.....it usually ends up being a sloppy, incomplete product....

So shall the Thompson campaign will be looked upon...a sloppy, incomplete product...
