Rush Limbaugh and Fred Thompson
National Ledger ^ | 01/17/08 | Chris Davis

Posted on 01/17/2008 11:23:00 AM PST by Route66

...You can hear it in Limbaugh’s voice and see it in his face. He badly wants to throw the full weight of conservatism behind that candidate. He so desperately wants to that his teeth probably hurt. He’s waiting, waiting for someone to take the lead. Get noticed. He’s waiting for someone to give him the go ahead to cream the opposition.

You can hear the excitement in Rush’s voice when he talks about the South Carolina primary. It’s “The Passion.” The passion of conservatism emerging when he talks about that primary. Why, you ask? Because, for the first time since the primaries have begun, conservative Republicans will be voting for fellow conservative Republicans...

...Rush Limbaugh believes in conservatism. It’s engrained in his soul. He introduced me to it, and now it’s engrained in my soul. I can recognize it like a tick on a white dog. It’s as obvious as that.

I recognize it in Senator Fred Thompson, and so does Rush Limbaugh. He’s hinted, he’s implied, and he’s even begged conservatives to see what he sees in Fred Thompson. He sees conservatism, the same kind of conservatism he saw in Ronald Reagan. He doesn’t want long, bloated policy. He wants simple, effervescent conservatism for Americans to unfold before their very eyes...

Actually, Huckabee is up from Monday, and Fred has not moved.

Rush must endorse Fred before Saturday!

I believe it's coming tomorrow. I'm praying it's coming tomorrow.

I think Huckabee’s a great politician and goes negative very, very well. He’s smart. If he could kill McCain’s candidacy and enhance his own he’d do it. My opinion.

He did not get where he is today by annoying 70% of his audience.
Nonsense.
The majority of his audience are liberals.
Documented fact.

Based on the comments I’ve heard, it seems Rush prefers: Thompson, Romney, or Guiliani... He appears to be directing his followers toward any one of these guys.

He’s obviouly campaigning against Huckabee and McCain.

You support the Huckster , so it’s no surprise that you are trying to smear Fred with inane innuendoes .

For all of your fine caps speech, you have no real logic to add to this discussion. You have no proof. You are calling Thompson a liar as Thompson has clearly said he will not drop out and endorse Mclame.

Celebrity endorsements are nothing. Does anyone really make decisions on what Rush says? If they do perhaps they aren't smart enough to vote.

I already have chosen my candidate. I've been supporting him for a long time. The importance of the Limbaugh non-endorsement endorsement is that it forces some to cut through the claims of conservatism from each candidate and get down to our core principles and the conservative message.

Your complaint is without merit.

When a person posts a thread, responses to the 1st entry in the thread are generally about the thing posted, NOT about the poster.

My comments were about the person who wrote the article, NOT the person who posted the article.

You were seeking out an offense where none could be rationally found. Now, if you think I was unfair in my characterization of Chip Davis, please feel free to argue with me on the point.

I don’t think ‘we’ are waiting for Rush to tell ‘us’ who to vote for. People would like him to endorse Fred so he can get more exposure.

We can and do choose our own candidates around here.

A vote for Thonmpson is a vote for McCain and Thompson ONLY as McCains running mate or Thompson being in McCains cabinet. Fred has no REAL interest in winning. Period.

This comment goes right up there with all the wishful thinking on the part of the Huck and Romney supporters who think Thompson will drop out and endorse McCain. That isn't happening. Maybe you missed this Glenn Beck Interview with Fred Thompson

Here is an excerpt:

GLENN: How do you explain? Because -- you know, and it's unfair to ask a competitor this question but I'm going to ask it anyway because you know the man and you worked with the man for a long time and everybody says he's a good man and everything else. But good God almighty, he's wrong on just about everything. How do you explain with conservatives going out to vote, how are they supporting John McCain? What is this -- where is this coming from?

SENATOR THOMPSON: I think the basis of it is national security, national defense. John was right, I think, with regard to Iraq and he stood tough during tough times and I think he turned out to be right. And I was the same place the whole time and have been. We agree on that. But John is wrong on some other important things and he was wrong when he voted against the Bush tax cuts.

GLENN: But wait a minute. I mean --

SENATOR THOMPSON: He says he's changed his mind about that now and, you know, sobeit. But, you know, I was there during part of that time and I voted the other way. I believed the other way then, I believe the other way now. He's certainly wrong with regard to the immigration bill that they tried to get the American people sign off on last year and they gave a resounding no and now everybody's getting tough on the border. But on taxes and immigration, especially, you know, I think he's wrong. But so is Huckabee as far as that's concerned.

GLENN: But he's also wrong with McCain/Lieberman where he wants to sign treaties for global warming. He wants to give away sovereignty on global warming. This guy is not a conservative.

SENATOR THOMPSON: No, I think he's in the wrong direction on that, too. I think that that's absolutely true. But, you know, he's like everybody else. You know, he has his strong suits and his weak suits. But I think that the direction that he and Huckabee and others really, I think Giuliani and where Romney has been in the past all are going in a so-called moderate direction, which is going to lead to, you know, so-called big government conservativism or bigger government conservativism anyway.

....

GLENN: All right. Senator Fred Thompson, let me ask you something that you and I disagree on pretty widely, I think, and that is I'm very concerned about our economy and you say that we're not headed for -- or you said a couple of months ago we weren't headed for a recession. I think it's all due to spending, just out-of-control spending both at home and in Washington, D.C.. our banking system is in a shambles. The Fed is running out of levers to open up and we've got several people on both sides of the aisle that are saying that they want a stimulus package. If the -- well, first of all do you think we're headed for a recession and if so, what is it that you propose to do to fix it?

SENATOR THOMPSON: Well, I don't -- see, we meet ourselves coming back there, Glenn, because, you know, you are taking a page out of the McCain talking points there. You know, he thinks it's down all due to spending. Nobody's harder on spending than I am but it's not the only reason for this economic downturn. Spending needs to be controlled on a longer term basis. We're all talking about today and tomorrow and the stock market today and the unemployment rate this very minute and all of that. When we're locked into a spending pattern over the next several years, it's going to be economic catastrophe for us. Has nothing to do with the current problem but it's a longer term issue. That's what I'm talking about.

Yeah, that sounds like Thompson is positioning himself to drop out of the race and endorse McCain, or that he is trying to land a spot as McCain's VP or in his cabinet to me! (give me a break with the Huckabee pipedream talking points already)

No, he has not. He has made comments about it, and if you want you can post his quotes here, but he did not say that it was a mistake.

Speaking of dirty politics. You’ve heard of the push polling by someone who is saying terrible lies about Fred and then wonderful lies about Huckabee?

We went again today to see Fred and the phone calls came up from the crowd. Fred wanted to know how many people in the audience had received those calls, more than half, I’d say a majority of the room, possible 75% said they had.

Pretty sad.
