U.S. Carrier Kitty Hawk was in 28-hour Standoff with Chinese Submarine

Tense battle-ready standoff in Taiwan Strait

(Hong Kong=Yonhap News) Chung Juho = U.S. aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk (and its battle group) had 28-hour battle-ready standoff with a Chinese submarine and a missile destroyer in Taiwan Strait last November, it has been revealed.

This was the first military standoff between U.S. and China since the Taiwan Strait Crisis in 1996.

According to Jan. 16 dispatch by China Times in Taiwan, on Nov. 23 last year, Kitty Hawk battle group was en route to Japan after China refused its port call in Hong Kong, entering Taiwan Strait instead of using its normal route. China immediately dispatched a Song-class submarine which happened to be in the neighborhood, and had it track the battle group.

China also sent a missile destroyer Shenzhen from its Southern Fleet which was readying itself in Hainan Island for the (upcoming) visit to Japan, joining the Kitty Hawk watch.

The battle group with the carrier and its eight escort ships were sailing northward at an even distance away (from China and Taiwan,) and the Chinese submarine and the destroyer were following and watching the battle group from the western side along the Chinese mainland.

Carrier Kitty Hawk was alerted by a P3-C anti-submarine plane from U.S. forces in Japan that a Chinese submarine and its destroyer were following them. The group stopped sailing and went into battle-ready mode, sending out warplanes to protect the fleet.

After tense 28-hour standoff, the battle group was able to return to Yokosuka base in Japan only in Nov. 24.

According to an U.S. military source, the Chinese submarine sneaked into Taiwan Strait from west after taking a detour around Taiwan's southern shore from east, in an effort to monitor Kitty Hawk battle group. S-2T anti-submarine plane from Taiwanese navy was conducting the regular patrol in the area, but was not able to detect the submarine.

It’s kind of sad. At the peak we were commissioning a dozen Permit subs a year. In 1984 I think we commissioned 6 LA class and 2 Ohio class boomers. Now we’re luck to commission one a year.

>>You should also holster that stuff about the government putting “corporate greed” above defense.”

Sorry, my holster. It is all about greed.

I still believe, the quest for money is the root of all evil.

Theres capitalism, then theres pure greed.

I happen to think it’s greed when mega-financial institutions lend bad money to those the KNEW would have difficulty keeping up when their ARMS readjusted.

That’s not dealing with integrity. That’s just plain greed.

Same goes with the government allowing these corporations to go to a developing nation and pollute the crap outta their waterways, air and land for profit.

Corps circumvent health and safety regulation in the U.S. and go to India and China........no holds barred.

My corp does millions in business with China. The stories guys bring back are something else. There are days one can’t even go outside because of the air quality in some cities.

This type of bank behavior happens very, very regularly in financial history. Just finished reading "The Panic of 1907" by Bruner and Carr. Know your bank and what it's involved in. For example, I bank at Hudson City (hcsbonline.com) which has recently received awards for its efficiency and avoidance of subprime issues.

I'm more concerned about relentless growth of entitlements and creeping restrictions on personal freedom than I am on any specific financial market issue this or next year.

The truth of what happened is classified.

Your post is on point, IMHO. I've been away from the Navy for a long time and never had duties involving airborne advanced intelligence gathering. However, I would be very surprised if the crew in this case were not well trained as to the action to be taken in extremis. A violation of formal operating procedures did not, in my experience, result in commendations. I doubt if this has changed.

Valid point, but it’s important to remember, WE ALL have a responsibility in the health of our nation.

This is a forgotten concept. When greed takes the place of integrity....well then, you get what were seeing in the markets. This goes for any segment of the economy.

I agree with you on that one.
As far as a great war with China, I am not so sure it will be with us. When you look at demographics and geographics, it would seem more likely that China and Russia willhave a go at it. Look at the population Russia approx. 149 million, China 1.2 Billion? Then look at the proximity of those two nations to each other. Russia is the largest country on Earth. China needs space. They don’t want part of the USA to incorporate. Possibly China though.

I heard or read an interesting assessment of Bush policy with China. The person's assertion was that they see China as analogous to Germany before WWI, and they want to ensure that we don't go down the same path. I'm not sure that's the right approach, but using judo when you should be using a katana is definitely better than not knowing there's a threat at all.

I wish I could remember who said it...I think it was Krauthammer.

If the person's comments you are recalling is thinking in those terms, I am amazed that they would skip WWII Germany to focus on WWI Germany.

China is being provided the monetary stream, technology and forgiveness of a multitute of sins, to build up towards war.  While they do this, the world looks on with all the insight of an adoring virgin infatuated with the local male slut.  Our leaders are blinded to the reality that is China.  It is expansionist.  It is not only abusive of it's own people and shows no signs of letting up, but has set it's sights on a piece of territory that hasn't been under it's rule ever.  Mainland China as a communist state has never conquered Taiwan, has no claim to it any more than it has a claim to the Philipines.  It has already demanded and has been placated with the return of Hong Kong and another enclave whose name I can recall at the moment, but those aren't it's only claims/demands.

In the end China is going to demand ownership of the Spratly chain of islands.  It is also going to move on to other demands in my estimation.  Those may very well include other nations.

And let's call a spade a spade.  China is intent on world domination.  Any block to that is something that will have to be overcome.  And that comes to us.

The resemblence to WWII Germany and our seeming blindness to the very real dangers of that, are astounding.

In every era, there have been those who have succumbed to greed or other failings and some who have stayed on the side of integrity. Our nation’s future depends, ultimately, on how many are on one side of the balance versus the other in their daily lives, even in the seemingly smallest of personal matters. It’s beyond the reach of government, of course. I believe prayer, and personal responsibility (including voting your conscience!), are the most appropriate responses to this situation.

I don’t understand why that plane wasn’t torched the moment the crew evacuated it in China.

I tend to agree with you, I was just noting if that’s true they aren’t really standing there thinking “all is wonderful with our Chinese buds” anymore that George V and parliament were thinking that Kaiser Bill was Mr. Peace and Love.

I’m not very clear on precisely what you are trying to say to me.

Are you saying I contribute to globalism and globalist’s goals?

Thanks for that observation. When I read your comments, it almost seemed as if the comments you described were addressing some causal effect that contributed to Germany going postal, something that could have been avoided. Did you pick up on that?

IIRC, the puppet masters have scheduled China to attack our west coast and with the Mexicans along our Southern coast and border; and Russia our east coast and through Canada.  Carter and Klintoon did not grant them essentially military bases on both ends of the Panama canal for nothing. . . . and in Long Beach, CA.

Quix I don’t know how far I’m going to buy into all that, but I will say that we shouldn’t allow problems to fester that feed into this concept. I am against any policies that would enable something like this, and I do think at least a few of your observations do.

No, I wasn't seeking to imply you were contributing to globalism and globalist goals.

I believe your first post addressed issues that could feed the perception that we were being set up for war.  While I am quite sympathetic to the idea that war is looming, I'm not quite convinced each of your listed contributing factors have been put into play in preparation for it.  It is possible that they were, but we can disagree on that point to a certain degree without being diametrically opposed.

My point was that I do not think we have been very smart about avoiding situations that feed into the overall game plan you have addressed.  Whether the threat is real or not, it's just plain stupid to allow some of what we have based on sound security principles.

Does that help.
