U.S. Carrier Kitty Hawk was in 28-hour Standoff with Chinese Submarine

Tense battle-ready standoff in Taiwan Strait

(Hong Kong=Yonhap News) Chung Juho = U.S. aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk (and its battle group) had 28-hour battle-ready standoff with a Chinese submarine and a missile destroyer in Taiwan Strait last November, it has been revealed.

This was the first military standoff between U.S. and China since the Taiwan Strait Crisis in 1996.

According to Jan. 16 dispatch by China Times in Taiwan, on Nov. 23 last year, Kitty Hawk battle group was en route to Japan after China refused its port call in Hong Kong, entering Taiwan Strait instead of using its normal route. China immediately dispatched a Song-class submarine which happened to be in the neighborhood, and had it track the battle group.

China also sent a missile destroyer Shenzhen from its Southern Fleet which was readying itself in Hainan Island for the (upcoming) visit to Japan, joining the Kitty Hawk watch.

The battle group with the carrier and its eight escort ships were sailing northward at an even distance away (from China and Taiwan,) and the Chinese submarine and the destroyer were following and watching the battle group from the western side along the Chinese mainland.

Carrier Kitty Hawk was alerted by a P3-C anti-submarine plane from U.S. forces in Japan that a Chinese submarine and its destroyer were following them. The group stopped sailing and went into battle-ready mode, sending out warplanes to protect the fleet.

After tense 28-hour standoff, the battle group was able to return to Yokosuka base in Japan only in Nov. 24.

According to an U.S. military source, the Chinese submarine sneaked into Taiwan Strait from west after taking a detour around Taiwan's southern shore from east, in an effort to monitor Kitty Hawk battle group. S-2T anti-submarine plane from Taiwanese navy was conducting the regular patrol in the area, but was not able to detect the submarine.

Interesting verse on your homepage.

Yeah, it's a Todd Rundgren song. I think it's funny.

THEN, I probably have nothing to say that will convince you.

You're right about that.

I heard or read an interesting assessment of Bush policy with China. The person's assertion was that they see China as analogous to Germany before WWI, and they want to ensure that we don't go down the same path. I'm not sure that's the right approach, but using judo when you should be using a katana is definitely better than not knowing there's a threat at all.

I wish I could remember who said it...I think it was Krauthammer.

A fellow I know is on the Kitty Hawk was royally pissed when he wrote me about this. The plan was to port for some Christmas shopping and some of the fellows have sweeties there, as well. I vaguely remember after all (I may be remembering wrong) he said China said they could come back after all. Yeah right!

I wouldn’t worry about their investments in our banks. That is a fool’s errand on their part. Agree though with the threats of their military, tech & economic strides, & espionage.

If they were flying and it was daylight then they should have gone to Taiwan.

The plane is made to fly on two engines.

They need to teach more about the WWII bombers and the risk they took.

I wonder what happened to Singapore offering to base one of our fleets. Probably a more convenient location than Perth, though it might have been more convenient for the enemy as well.

I'd say it would be far safer than any M.E. port thats for certain. You have to be careful about where you do yard work and who you allow around the ships. If you want to know a ships secrets that's the best place to learn them. Going back to a two carrier group presence in the MED SEA as we did since post WW2 - the 1990's would also be wise. But we need at least two more carriers built to make it practical. We need to get away from Suez dependence with our fleets and go back to some basic rules of safety in numbers while underway. The COLE was a perfect example of what happens when that is violated. COLE should have fueled at sea.

Well, I wouldn’t want you anywhere near my chain of command.

And I doubt I'd ever have to worry about you being anywhere mine, either.

Interesting...did not know that. I take it that means the Swedes and their stealthy subs are not for sale?

Not to Taiwan. Everyone is afraid of annoying China.

I agree with SkyPilot on the proper course (bail out, or destroy equipment, then bail out) but I also have to second Non-Sequitir here. I certainly never expected to survive ditching in a KC-135. Ditching is a nightmare, and the water is pretty cold in that part of the Pacific.

Yeah, he shouldn't have landed in China, but let's be clear: his other options could reasonably be expected to kill his entire crew.

Taliban Section of our party. (Huck or Mitt)

I guess i'm going to have to go off-topic here. Bear in mind I'm a Fredhead, despise Huckabee and have no use for Mitt.

The Taliban? Could you get a grip, please? People who use that term have no clue what the Taliban were like. Would you put "The bin Laden Section of our party" in your tag? If not, you shouldn't be putting Taliban in there.

The “We-weren’t-there,-You’re-an-armchair-general,-Our-troops-lives-are-sacred” argument is duly noted, but not particularly pertinent to this situation.

Expecially to those who have never been there. Sign up and volunteer for similar missions and then we'll talk. Until then I'll repeat that it's easy for you to advocate suicide missions from the comfort and safety of your livingroom but until you've been tested under similar conditions your second guessing lacks any authority.

I agree that we shouldn’t be second guessing, but the issue isn’t expense, but intelligence value.

USA should Boycott and let the Chi-Cons pick up the pieces. Protect our Country not our political correctness!

Olympic boycotts don't hurt the home country worth spit, they only hurt our athletes and remove an opportunity to show up the enemy in their backyard. If FDR had boycotted the Munich games we wouldn't have footage of Jesse Owens beating on the "Master Race" like a drum.

Screw the chicoms... boycott their pathetic Olympics! Boycotts don't significantly hurt host countries, they just screw our athletes. go to the bad guy's house and show him up, just like we did at Munich.

Am a bit curious about your age range . . . and the degree to which you’ve investigated such issues, trends, movements etc.

It’s somewhat of a fascinating phenomenon to me when folks seemingly willfully ignore increasingly massive amounts of data more and more starkly displayed from virtually every corner of reality.

I’d really like to understand that phenomenon better but it still mystifies me.

This article smacks of ChiCom domestic propaganda ...

The article was from a South Korean newspaper, citing a Taiwan article. So much for ChiCom domestic propaganda.
