Fred on Religion [Mark Hemingway]
A nice bit from Thompson regarding his thoughts on religion:
A woman asked him if he would as a Christian, as a conservative continue President Bushs programs to combat global AIDS.
Christ didnt tell us to go to the government and pass a bill to get some of these social problems dealt with. He told us to do it, Thompson said.
The government has its role, but we need to keep firmly in mind the role of the government, and the role of us as individuals and as Christians on the other.
He received a round of applause for his answer, and went on to expand on the role of government in fighting AIDS and other diseases.
Im not going to go around the state and the country with regards to a serious problem and say that Im going to prioritize that, he said.
With people dying of cancer, and heart disease, and children dying of leukemia still, I got to tell you weve got a lot of problems here, and we all may have our one thats affected us the most, but its a broad array. And a president who will tell you the truth is that we have to look across the board and do what we can and what we should based upon the severity of the problem and the chances that our research money will do some good in these areas.

but Fred's wrong that government doesn't have any responsibility and it's all left up to the individual
He didn't say that. He said that the government has to weigh problems and prioritize where it can do the most good.
And a president who will tell you the truth is that we have to look across the board and do what we can and what we should based upon the severity of the problem and the chances that our research money will do some good in these areas.

It’s sad, really. After 20 years, we finally get a candidate - Fred Thompson - who at least approaches the level of a true Constitutionalist (and no, RoPaul doesn’t count), and he can barely break 10% among Republicans. What is wrong with this party???

“God did indeed tell kings to consider the cause of the poor and needy. And he took ruling power away from one king for failure to do so.”
Reference, please. I hope you are not projecting God’s specific commands to Israel onto the US of A.

And Jesus said Whatever YOU do for the least of these, YOU did for me. It is a personal, heart issue. Not a “let the government take it from you, give it to a bureaucratic government agency that ends up wasting most of it and not really helping anybody anyway” you did for me.

REAL, honest-to-goodness straight talk. Not afraid to bring up sore subjects, but does it in a way that doesn’t make us feel like we’re doomed. Tells the American people why things need to be done. Connects with all wings of the conservative movement.
Gee, what former Republican President does that sound like?

I heard a Christian talk-show host today bashing Fred and promoting Huckabee. They took an interview with Mrs. Thompson and played some of her comments out of context.

His answer was great until the end, when he still said it was government’s job to fund research to solve people’s problems — he simply wanted to be fiscally responsible about doing so.
Not that any other candidates are looking to stop government from trying to solve all our problems — far from it. Just that as the man most connected with limited-government principles and federalism, and the way he started answering, one could hope for a different end.

Absolutely frightening isn’t it?

That is the CHRISTIAN answer. I’d love to send a copy to all the Catholic bishops, not that they’d understand what he’s talking about. Not to mention all the National Council of Churches hangers-on.

I’m beginning to think that perhaps America is not worthy of him. Shallow, superficial charlatans with dog and pony shows seem to be what the people want.

Can't imagine James Madison would be caught saying this: "And a president who will tell you the truth is that we have to look across the board and do what we can and what we should based upon the severity of the problem and the chances that our research money will do some good in these areas.
Because I can't find the article of the Constitution which grants the right of Congress to take my money and use it to fund research to help other people with their problems, even if it IS based on the "chances it will do some good".
Everybody who calls for pork spending contends that the spending will do someone some good. Nobody SAYS they are just spending money to buy votes.
My candidate isn't any better on this one, so this isn't a "don't vote for him" post. I'm just dissappointed that so many people who have rightly praised Fred Thompson for his limited-government positions would be claiming that his answer was 100% right, when he said we should spend money on research based on whether it would do some good, rather than based on whether it's a job that was assigned to the government by the Constitution.
To: DannyTN
But that’s because that was how those governments were set up. Our government is not, and there is no reason for Government to be involved in charity.
To: greyfoxx39
He makes it sound so darn simple!Honesty and common sense.

Are you saying that God mandates that one man should take the fruits of another man’s labor and distribute it as e sees fit?

The priority part was good, but Fred's wrong that government doesn't have any responsibility and it's all left up to the individual. God did indeed tell kings to consider the cause of the poor and needy. And he took ruling power away from one king for failure to do so.First, Thompson didn't say the government had no responsibility.
Second and IMO more important, our Republic is not governed by kings. Its power resides with the People.

The track record for research money placed by government directly or indirectly needs badly to be evaluated. Could we not improve in this area and where is the leadership to direct it?

Oooooh! The “establishment” of the “entitled” ain’t gonna like that! They think “The Government” has the sole duty to be a Fixer of all things.
Way to go, Fred!
