                Fred on Religion   [Mark Hemingway]
A nice bit from Thompson regarding his thoughts on religion:
A woman asked him if he would as a Christian, as a conservative continue President Bushs programs to combat global AIDS.
Christ didnt tell us to go to the government and pass a bill to get some of these social problems dealt with. He told us to do it, Thompson said.
The government has its role, but we need to keep firmly in mind the role of the government, and the role of us as individuals and as Christians on the other.
He received a round of applause for his answer, and went on to expand on the role of government in fighting AIDS and other diseases.
Im not going to go around the state and the country with regards to a serious problem and say that Im going to prioritize that, he said.
With people dying of cancer, and heart disease, and children dying of leukemia still, I got to tell you weve got a lot of problems here, and we all may have our one thats affected us the most, but its a broad array. And a president who will tell you the truth is that we have to look across the board and do what we can and what we should based upon the severity of the problem and the chances that our research money will do some good in these areas.

It is simple. We have been the victims of the left wing propagandists for far too long!

Thompson Takes on McCain   [Jonathan Adler]
Last weekend, some Cornerites lamented that Fred Thompson was attacking Huckabee and ignoring McCain.  Some even made the (in my view silly) suggestion that Thompson was angling to be McCain's running mate.  Well, that talk should now be put to rest, as Thompson has added some critiques of McCain to his repertoire, pointing out McCain's past and present views on taxes, immigration, and carbon controls, and their tendency toward "bigger government conservatism."   Hot Air has the details here.  Let me add that I always thought Thompson's decision to attack Huckabee first was a smart strategic move.  As folks here and elsewhere noted, Huckabee occupied much of the space in the primary that folks once thought Fred would occupy: conservatives dissatisfied with the McCain-Giuliani-Romney choice.  So it always made sense to me that Fred should reclaim some of this territory first, reestablish his base among conservatives, and gain some momentum.  Once this has been accomplished, Fred could then expand his efforts to bring folks over from the other candidates, which he is now beginning to do.  The latest Rasmussen national tracking numbers show him tied for third with Romney and Giuliani, and in easy striking distance of McCain and Huckabee, who are effectively tied for the lead.

The priority part was good, but Fred's wrong that government doesn't have any responsibility and it's all left up to the individual.
God did indeed tell kings to consider the cause of the poor and needy. And he took ruling power away from one king for failure to do so.

Common sense conservatism is always right but it is becoming endangered. We need to fight for it if we want it to survive.
 Vote for Fred Thompson.

Please show me where Fred said the government doesn't have any responsibility. In fact he said just the opposite.

Wish you were down here and could hear him in person. You’d really get fired up. He really is an excellent speaker off the cuff even though some complain he says ‘uh’, too much. At least he isn’t reading a script or memorizing a sound bite.
Fred is real talk and straight talk. He is truly the true conservative in this race.

I find it simply appalling that McCain and Huckabee are in the LEAD nationally- though not sure how important the nationals are..but STILL.
I read somewhere this morning that a Republican woman in Michigan said her # 1 issue is illegal immigration. She’s voting for McCain. The reporter asked her how that squared with McCain being one of the architects of the bill last spring- and it turns out this voter HAD NO IDEA MC CAIN HAD BEEN PART OF THAT.
UNREAL.
