So much for secular government
Now, I understand that Christians believe the word of God (as defined by the various denominations) is the ultimate truth. And I understand that Christians want to incorporate that truth as they see it in our laws. But what we need to remember is that while Christianity dominates Americas spiritual landscape not everyone in America is a Christian. Weve got Jews and Muslims, Buddhists and atheists too. And they may not want the Constitution to reflect the word of God as Mike Huckabee sees it
This is why our founding fathers put, in the very first amendment of the Constitution, a clause ensuring that our national government would be a secular government. They realized that all Americans should be free to practice the religion of their choice
Huckabee doesnt seem to get this, and all primary season hyperbole aside, its a little scary.
He’s talking about the Federal Marriage Amendment.
The founding fathers had a better understanding of Christianity and religion than the Huckster will ever hope to have.
No surprise there: obviously he’s talking to his supporters in the anti-Abortion Party (aka “Values Voters” and “Social Conservatives”).
Oh boy.
No matter, he will be creamed in the general election for saying this.
________
I have a hard time imagining he’ll be the one left standing after the primaries.
I’m beginning to not like this man. He’s too much of a control freak.
What were the Huckster's SAT (or equivalent) scores?
If anyone is a pro-life conservative it's me, and I don't like either Huckabee's insinuations here or yours.
wow.
Huck is ummm, not altogether "clear" in his understanding of our government structure.
And to this "Social Conservative" he sounds like a deaf man trying to sing Puccini.
It’s very hard to get it into Huckster voters’ heads: they could vote for Mickey Mouse and he’d have a better chance of winning the general election. THERE IS NO WAY HUCKABEE COULD WIN. If the other guy [gal] DIED he [she] would still beat Huckabee. A vote for Huckabee is a vote for a Democrat (in more ways than one). Why don’t they get it? If they are voting against abortion, well, Hillary and Barack want it legal and free for all. That’s what a vote for Huckabee will bring.
Better to vote for Fred. He’ll whip the Dem nominee.
It’s a very brief quote, out of context, and a marriage amendment would conform to religions in addition to Christianity. I don’t want Huck but I need to hear more than one sentence before I condemn him on something.
Most conservatives do believe that the Constitution enshrines rights which man has been given by God, therefore there is a religious basis in that sense.
I always figured Huckabee would do or say something stupid.
This appears to be it, for the moment anyway....(chuckle)
Unless he runs third party, he’ll be at home watching returns just like you and I.
“Huckabee: The Constitution Should Be Amended To Conform To The Word Of God (video included)”
Cool.
Which god?
The media and Dems will play this over and over, he will lose.
And just which Christian denomination’s interpretation of the Word of God gets put into the Constitution?
We may just be talking about gay marriage now, but once politicans start making religious faith the law, it’ll get interesting once people want to ban alcohol, shellfish, bingo at Catholic churches and working on Sunday...or Saturday.
I wouldn’t be so sure. Huck’s a crafty one. It’s like the cross ad. He gets a strong msg out to the gullible Christians he is courting, and he uses his smooth talk and hip sense of humor to smooth it all over later. He seems like a very effective salesman.
