Not just journalism. Almost every “detective” show on TV had a killer or other criminal who was a crazed / drugged out [or both] ‘Nam vet for the villain.

If my memory is correct, there was similar yellow journalism near the end of the Vietnam War. It wasn't nearly as subtle back then. It was in your face and viscous as hell.
