GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba - The chief of the U.S. military said Sunday he favors closing the prison here as soon as possible because he believes negative publicity worldwide about treatment of terrorist suspects has been "pretty damaging" to the image of the United States.
"I'd like to see it shut down," Adm. Mike Mullen said in an interview with three reporters who toured the detention center with him on his first visit since becoming chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff last October.

“Save us, at least, having to pay for trials and the fear of having these animals in our midst.”
There are *certain* candidates on both sides of the isle who would grant them citizenship to this country.
Bravo! Worth a repeat:
I do not like it when the men we depend on use silly excuses like, We should close Gitmo because the world does not like it. I want men of steel to be our leaders, especially in war time. I do not like it when President Bush says it. I do not like it when those words come out of namby-pamby men he appoints. We are at war. If we are at war then Out or Uniform Barbarians should be kept in prison at the very least. I expect strength of character and strong will from men in the position of the President, Chairman of the JCS, Secretary of Defense and the Deputy Secretary to the Secretary of Defense. If men want to be leaders, then they should damn well lead, especially in time of war. - Chgogal
Usually, we have Status of Forces agreements with the host government to determine those questions. They vary country to country and are the subject of bilateral negotiations. Certainly if a Danish citizen, an employee of the USG on the base, was caught in a crime, he/she would not be sent back to the US for trial and punishment under US law. Even US military personnel can be turned over to local authorities for trial and punishment if they commit a crime depending upon the SOFA and the nature of the crime, i.e., it involved a case against a host country citizen.
I’m sorry - I can’t read this site as much as I used to - I’m not familiar with the person or position he held or why he was let go.
I look at it this way.
Gitmo is still open. President Bush has said he would rather it close but he cares much more about what to do with the brutal killers that are held there, so it won’t be closed until the issues of what to do with those brutal killers is satisfactorily resolved. Too bad all of you can’t make him your puppet or parrot, so that the exact words you want out of his mouth always come out and never disappoint you.
Myself, I don’t expect his every utterance to be the words I would use. I won’t get upset unless he closes Gitmo without thought or care concerning the disposition of those brutal killers. So far, he has kept it open and that would not be happening if he had lost either in 2000 or 2004, and it will not remain open if he’s replaced by the wrong person.
Mullen should just keep his mouth shut. The President has spoken, and has acted. Please shut up, Admiral, Sir.
I hate to admit it, but it is probably time to shut this place down. It makes our country look like a totalitarian state. And that’s what our enemies want.
Besides, I don’t think the US any longer has the will to fight this war. Better to tend to our own business here at home.
I’m tired of my tax dollars paying to try to convert crazies who live thousands of miles away.

Relocate to ANWR
Funny thing about war is that it cleans out the Admiral/General closet. You go through twit after twit looking for somebody that rose to the top instead of floated.
Wow, it’s about 4:30. Time to convene another Admiral Promotion Panel. Won’t you excuse me?
I agree. Cut the cost of room and board. SO, let's do it...
since the inmates are enemy combatants, without uniform or insignia, not under the flag of a nation who signed the Geneva Convention on Land Warfare, well...
SHOOT THEM!

“Adm. Mike Mullen” Admiral?! Admiral? A freaking navy desk warrior is going to give orders what the US MARINES must do?
When hell freezes over, sailor!
So, why don't we execute them as terrorists?
