GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba - The chief of the U.S. military said Sunday he favors closing the prison here as soon as possible because he believes negative publicity worldwide about treatment of terrorist suspects has been "pretty damaging" to the image of the United States.
"I'd like to see it shut down," Adm. Mike Mullen said in an interview with three reporters who toured the detention center with him on his first visit since becoming chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff last October.

Or Huckabee.
WWII is the last war we fought to absolutely win. PC now controls every aspect of our society, including the way we fight wars, and it will eventually cause a cataclysmic loss of American lives.
MM (in TX)
whose law does apply on US military bases? Denmark’s? Ghana’s?
Yes, perpetually, apparently. How convenient.
George Orwell was soooo right.
Do you think Hitlery will not abuse this power? What thought crime criminals will SHE send to Guantanamo?
Yes, we must all give up our freedom, for the good of the cause. Bull.
What are you smoking liberal lunatic?
Stop dreaming and listening to your mom’s fairy tales and try to stick to the facts and the real worLd.
Maybe you don’t like the truth but sorry i prefer the truth.
Wonder why many libs like smoking joints
But they would confirm a Clintonite.
Also the superior of Mr. (Maj.) Coughlin. Another error and blunder by the CJS.
Lots of irrelevant slams against the President on this thread.
Gitmo hasn’t closed, has it? Hmmm? There’s a reason for that, despite comments that have been made that they WISH it could be closed. They always follow up to say, but they can’t just be turned lose on society and Bush himself has said brutal killers are kept there.
And as we know, some of them have been let go, even while Gitmo stays open, and have returned to the battlefield.
Mullen perhaps THINKS he was stating Bush’s policy, but if you ask me he stated it much less artfully and clearly than the CIC himself. Either that, or the reports of his comments have taken them out of context.
IMO, the best thing he could have done is keep his mouth shut and say the President has stated HIS position and he, Mullen, isn’t going to say another word about it.
(BTW, lancey, to call the President a coward for something that hasn’t even happened is ridiculous. The President himself has KEPT it from happening. Yes, that’s right. If Kerry or Gore or McCain or Huckabee were there, IT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED LONG AGO.)
My problem with the statements from Mullen and Bush has more to do with their worry about what “the rest of the world” thinks - - “the rest of the world” being the Euro-socialist press and the wobbly political “leaders” they have cowered.
Besides that, yes, Bush is a coward - a COWARD - for caving to the Democrats and dumping Peter Pace in favor of the mealy-mouthed liberal the rats wanted, Admiral Mullen.
a) Shut Gitmo down.
b) Bomb / invade Cuba.
c) Reopen Gitmo in Fidel’s old palace.
I suppose you’ve read George Orwell’s work and think he’s a liberal lunatic too?
Better stuff your ears, Ulysses - the sirens of Truth are singing.
Great point. So we bring the equivalent of 350 cop-killer Abu Mumia's to our prison system. It could bring the criminal-justice system to its knees!
Gitmo is actually leased land. Should they ever set foot on actual US soil, they can claim Refugee Status and collect welfare after being released.
Look at the flip side of that: Good PR in terms of dissuading terrorists.
It was a rhetorical question.
Mullen doesn’t work for England, but does he seem to be running the Joint Staff?
Orwell seems to be a kind of prophet for some of those who miss a compass.I believe first in J.Christ and i have red many books not only one.
Just trying to think by myself i’m not repeating some theories...You could begin by “Nicomaq’s Ethic” from Aristote and you will probably need a year to read it in the greek version
Exactly!
