GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba - The chief of the U.S. military said Sunday he favors closing the prison here as soon as possible because he believes negative publicity worldwide about treatment of terrorist suspects has been "pretty damaging" to the image of the United States.

"I'd like to see it shut down," Adm. Mike Mullen said in an interview with three reporters who toured the detention center with him on his first visit since becoming chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff last October.

Maybe it’s better to keep them alive as A WAR IS GOING ON...??
Just remind while you are drinking a cup of coffee.
A new kind of war we never knew...Have a little specific ideas ,keep in touch with reallity,it will be better than repeating simplist soft songs...
Like the kind of liberal advisers who don’t pay the consequences of their “nice” confortable stances and cheap moral

He is in charge of the military and would bet he has more information than you do to makes this very well informed decision. I am not saying that I agree with it but I guarantee he thought this threw carefully and did not do it for political reasons. Besides the war started winning as soon as the Navy got involved. When the Army was incharge it was a dismal failure. The Navy and Marine Corps changed the entire thing. The Navy should be thanked and not mocked.

How about the Admiral pay attention to Naval matters and let the elected officials sort out the Nation’s “image”?

He can’t. He is in charge of the entire military not just the Navy!

Who authorized the admiral to give an interview, especially one in which he took it upon himself to make such a suggestion? Do officers actually have such freedom in today’s military?
On the other hand he may only be following the wishes of the Commander and Chief.

No way would he give this speech without the President’s concent.

He is absolutely out of line.

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is the principal military adviser to the President.

What does “our image abroad” have to do with military advice? Oh, I forgot. In his interview with NPR, he talked about how father was a well-known publicist for movie and television actors. Oh my, oh my. It looks like the Admiral want to play PR man

BTW, if this is his advice, then he should do as his predecessor did — give his councel to POTUS privately.

But it’s a policy decision, not a military one.

Goldwater-Nichols (the LAW that Mullen serves under) says that he is “the principal military adviser to the President.”

This is a “military” decision by an only unbelievably long stretch

Great correlation.

However, as I recall, Coughlin got into a roe with one of England’s “special Assistants” but worked on the Joint Staff. He was, de facto, fired by Mullen.

“He is in charge of the entire military...”

A common misconception.

Actually, he is in charge of nothing. He has no troops abd no forces. His job is to be the principal military advisor to the President.

The Combatant Commanders exercise the unified command and control of forces assigned to them.

Even the CNO, CMC, ACOS, USAFCOS only have administrative authority rather than operational command authority.

Does he have influence? Yep. Advisors do.

“He is an embarrassment to this administration!”

How is he an embarrassment to the administration when he is merely repeating the publically stated view of the President?

You know, I've given this a lot of thought... I think that Gitmo should be closed too, but we can't just release the prisoners onto the street. They need to be relocated. And after a lot of careful thought, I found the perfect place.

There's a building in New York City, and while it's not really set up to act as a prison right now, all it would take is building a wall around the building, installing some concertina wire and guard turrets. I'm sure that the staff would welcome the additional, right thinking residents. The address is:620 Eighth Avenue, between 40th and 41st Streets in NYC. It's called "The New York Times Building."

England depends fully on Hesham Islam as he claims in a “Defenselink.mil” interview. I am sure if England wanted to save Coughlin he could have.

“Hesham has wonderful friendships and relationships, and therefore he can give me extraordinarily good advice in dealing with countries and people,” England said. “I take his advice, and I listen to him all the time.”

http://www.defenselink.mil/news/newsarticle.aspx?id=47795

Coughlin was also vocal about “England’s meeting earlier this year with officials of the ISNA, a Muslim Brotherhood front group in the US”

Adm. Mike Mullen

His job is to maintain the most effective killing force on the planet to preserve our national security.

Image? He should be demoted and given a general discharge. Let him spend retirement as a CNN talking-head clymer.
