GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba - The chief of the U.S. military said Sunday he favors closing the prison here as soon as possible because he believes negative publicity worldwide about treatment of terrorist suspects has been "pretty damaging" to the image of the United States.
"I'd like to see it shut down," Adm. Mike Mullen said in an interview with three reporters who toured the detention center with him on his first visit since becoming chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff last October.

Yup, you've unveiled me for what I am, a liberal ACLU lawyer.
Good work!
Since you want terrorists to keep getting fat and studying the Koran at Gitmo, I can only assume that you sympathize with their cause.
Ahah! We’re on to you! /sarcasm/
Can we try to keep it a secret just between the two of us?
The Supreme Court hasn't ruled any such thing. You don't even know what these laws are, and you are making the same arguments as the lawyers of the terrorists. You obviously aren't a conservative.
It doesn’t matter where we put the terrorist. The demorats want be satisfied.

If they close it, I vote to turn them over to Sheriff Joe in AZ...let them sit in a tent city outside in Phoenix...surely Joe will even feed them ham sandwiches every day...if it’s good enough for the prisoners of Phoenix, good enough for scumbag muzzie terrorists...Sheriff Joe would be perfect!!
Dumbocrat lawyers are just waiting for this to happen so they can get access to these poor terrorists who are opressed and tortured by the evil United States. Anyone who says otherwise, is probably too stupid to vote.
Calling John Edwards. Your future clients are waiting.
Did a little research - guess I got some right and some wrong. The biggest differences seem to be: no jury trial, evidence rules are different, and guilty verdict only needs two-thirds vote.
Under the procedures, a defendant would receive many, but not all, of the due process protections guaranteed to a defendant in a U.S. civilian criminal court. The tribunal procedures guarantee the following due process protections:
* An accused will be provided with defense counsel and can also have a lawyer of his or her own choosing, either a military or civilian attorney.
* The accursed will be presumed innocent until proven guilty. The prosecution must prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
* An accused may refuse to testify during trial. The accused will have the right to obtain witnesses and documents necessary for the defense.
* A person accused may not be tried twice before a military commission for the same offense
* An accused will be allowed to negotiate and enter into a plea agreement.
Under the procedures, however, a person can be convicted in a commission trial by a two-thirds majority of the commissioners: Unanimous verdicts are not required. Evidence, including previous trial testimony and written statements, will be admissible if it tends to prove or disprove the case at hand. The exclusionary rule, which keeps illegally seized evidence out of a civilian criminal trial, does not apply. The procedures do not provide for appeals from a guilty verdict to civilian judges. They do, however, call for “reviews” of a verdict by a three-member panel selected by the secretary of defense. No verdict will be final until approved by the president or the secretary of defense.
That Mullen guy is absolutely brilliant! /s
Bush should demand his resignation. Mullin needs t5o go!
Huckabee doesn’t really care what happens to Guantanamo. He wants votes and nothing more.
After pandering for the liberal vote by saying Guantanamo should be closed, he tried some real slick double talk.
Realizing he needed to sound tougher on terrorists, Huckabee did some rhetorical acrobatics and said “oh I said I think it should be closed because they get treated too well there.” This is the slimiest attempt at backtracking I’ve seen in a long time.
If they bring them here, would they stop kissing their asses with the halal food and non-kuffir touched queerans? Or would they have to remake the entire US prison system to accommodate these freaks?
I’d like to see Military Officers serving at the personal invitation of the President shut their public mouths down.

Actually, I've been lurking for quite a while. I finally joined in order to post about a lot of different things.
The news is the news. Nobody had posted it yet, and I thought it was extremely relevent to this site.
I apologize if I offended anyone by posting this, or by not waiting until several months after I joined to post. It does seem funny, and a bit sad, that if someone is not spot on with another's views, they get labeled a liberal DUmmie, even if they aren't.
Our upper military brass has been deballed by the liberals and feminists.......
Are you bashing the Navy? I certainly hope you take back your words, pronto.
Also the Joint Chiefs chairman had no business making a comment like that.
