Sorry, Not Interested (in joining the EU)

Serbia refuses to give up Kosovo—even if it means giving up its shot at entering the European Union.

There's a dark joke going around Serbia these days: "Russia finished the cold war with America—so Serbia is carrying on with it." Given the hostile stance of the two former superpowers over Kosovo, the assessment may be close to the mark. This week Washington heads to the United Nations Security Council's debate on Kosovo, with most of Europe alongside it, pressing for independence. But Serbia's Parliament has overwhelmingly rejected any future EU-imposed mission in Kosovo, and stands with the support of Russia and a growing list of countries including China, Indonesia and South Africa in its refusal to part with the region—even, according to Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, if it means shelving EU membership talks.

Serbia, it seems, has flipped the tables on the EU. For the first time, a European country outside the EU is not clamoring to be let in, but, on the contrary, making demands of its own, insisting Europe continue negotiations over Kosovo until an agreeable solution to all parties is met.....

It wasnt Orthodox terrorists that attacked on 9/11...It was Islamic terrorists

Best for the US to stop pushing for Kosovo independence. Unfortunately we have too many anti-American Globalists making bad foreign policy

Kosovo is the ancient birthplace of the Serbian nation and the people. Recoginition of Kosovo will cause another Balkan War. If you thought the Serbs were tough during the Bosnian War....wait until Kosovo hits.

This pandering to Islamics needs to stop. So much of our foreign policy today is based on appeasement of a terroristic and hateful religion (Islam) at the expense of the Judeo-Christian world.

Uh, if not for the Austrians, Poles and Russians, Europe would be speaking Turkish. The Serbs lost to the Turks in the 14th century and didn’t fully regain their independence until the 19th century. By the 19th century the Turks had no strength to conquer Europe.

Before the 19th century - when everyone called Turkey the “Sick man of Europe” - did Serbia routinely beat the Turks in major battles?

If what you said was true then how did the Turks conquer Hungary or get to the gates of Viena?

We (the US) are playing an odd and evil game. It seems we are committed to building islamic states every where we have troops.

“We’re not interested in joining the Modern world, we like the Medieval one just fine.”

Yes, and after the Security Council gives away Kosovo to create a greater Islamistan with Albania, they'll be trying to give away the American Southwest to create Azatlan. In their opposition to letting their country be carved up, I wholeheartedly support the Serbs and their Russsian allies.

We’ve done a poor job of recognizing the threat of Islamo Fascism in Bosnia. Instead, the EU and USA are trying to give Kososovo independence. That is like the U.S. having our southwest hacked-off and renamed Aztlan.

Throw in that our friends the Saudis have just executed a teenage maid from Indonesia and one wonders how long before we have public beheadings in Prishtina. Islam really is a religion fit for pigs.

Islamofascism, coming soon to a neigborhood near you, compliments of Jorge "Jesus-is-my-personal-guide" Bush.

The funny thing is that no important member of the EU is interested in a Serbian membership in the EU either. Serbia is poor and politically extremely instable. A sort of European Somalia and therefore uninteresting. BTW- the article is wrong in some regards. Serbia is by far the poorest part of Europe and not Romania or Bulgaria as they write it. The Serbs have the lowest income in Europe (fairly half of the Romanian income). Simply check the CIA-factbook.

I think it is unavoidable that Kosova will be ruled by the native Albanians sooner or later. To my information there is a big buy-out of Serbian land through the Albanians in the moment. The number of remaining Serbs in Kosova is shrinking in a frightening way. Since Serbia has no or only very little military or economic means left I doubt that it can enforce its claims.

So the Serbs reject the Dhimmitude that you race to embrace and that pisses you off, eh?

The Albanians in Kosovo (don't be an Osshole) are illegal immigrants who fled the collapsing economy in Albania.

Their claims to Kosovo are as legitimate as the Mexican illegal immigrant claims to Aztlan.

Go Serbia! BTW, I’m part Serbian and I remember during the 1990’s, it seems that due to a large number of persons of Serbian descent here in Pittsburgh, it seems that Pittsburgh was more pro-Serbian than Albanian.

I did check the CIA Fact Book and I have no idea where you got that data from. You talk about Serbia as though it some "Third-World African country", which it is not.

According to the IMF, Serbia ranks at #72 on a list of 179 countries in terms of per capita income. (The US ranks at #9) And Bulgaria is at #74. Considering that Serbia includes Kosovo with over 50 % unemployment there, we bombed the crap out of their infrastructure in 1999 after years of sanctions, and Serbia has more refugees than any other country in Europe, they are not doing too bad at all!

"Except that Serbia has ties to Russia that go way, way, waaaaayyy back. The US isn’t cutting those ties anytime soon."

Serbia's political ties to Russia have been greatly exaggerated in the MSM, because they have nothing else to say -- they don't know enough because they can't be bothered to understand history.

For close to the last 100 years, Russia & Serbia have been more at odds with one another than "tied". Between the Russian Revolution and WWII, there was virtually no closeness. Yugoslavia was where non-communist Russians ran to to escape the Bolsheviks. Shortly after WWII, Tito broke with Stalin and from that time on, no Russian soldier was allowed to set foot in Yugoslavia. Tito was more afraid of a Russian invasion than he was of the West.

It's true that the Russian people and Serbian people have always been friends, but not their governments. Post-Milosevic, Serbia has turned itself inside out to try and make peace with the US, but all we have done is continually screw them over in favor of Muslims and Germany's proteges, Croatia and Slovenia. Russia rode to their rescue. That's not their fault, it's ours.

"A sort of European Somalia and therefore uninteresting."

And yet Serbs are the ones who've been helping in technological advances and have earned patents in Germany, the U.S., and world - especially in engineering. Meanwhile the Albanians are earning vast amounts of money through crime networks in Europe and Britain - white slavery, robbery by gangs, drugs trafficking.

This is an example of a Serb in Germany:

2007-01-20 VARTA Microbattery wins prestigious FIRST INNOVATION AWARD 2006

VARTA Microbattery is the winner of The World's First Innovation Award 2006. This renowned prize was presented to Dr. Dejan Ilic on Jan. 20, 2007 at Frankfurt by the German Federal Minister for Economics and Technology, Michael Glos.

Some more from a link that expired:

http://www.patentstorm.us/inventors/Dejan_Ilic-1069207.html

Doctor Dejan Ilic got last year award for the manager of the year in Germany, as the Director of 'Varta Microbattery'. This year [2007] he made great success again by getting a silver medal for design of a battery for hearing device 'Power One'. The gold medal got designer of 'Porch 911 Carrera', while the bronze medal got designer of 'BMW 6 Coupe'.

Ilic was born in Serbia. He graduated physical chemistry in Belgrade. One of his most important awards is the one he got in 2003 for lifetime achievement from the World Association of the Chemists. He is also member of the New York Academy. His best known invention is the first European lithium battery for pacemaker that he made twenty years ago. The life of that battery is ten years. The significance of that invention can only be understood if said that at that time the batteries for pacemakers were manufactured in USA with life of two years only.

"The historical fact of the matter is that the Ottoman Turks conquered most of Serbia before Columbus discovered America and conquered Belgrade in 1521. Serbia only managed to completely free itself from Ottoman rule in 1867....If you want to thank somebody for saving the rest of Europe from the Ottomans, thank the Austrians, the Germans, the Poles, the Spaniards and the Italians."

True, but Serbs and Greeks were such a pain in the butt to the Ottoman Turks for 400 years, that the Turks really couldn't go much further, other than in spurts -- like the attempted Siege of Vienna. If Serbs and Greeks would have been willing to lay down arms and convert to Islam, it would likely have been over for the West.

And by the way, the navigators and many of the fighters for the Battle of Lepanto were actually Serbs from near my family's old village, around Perast, Montenegro.

The main reason I posted this was to show that even one of the most Liberal of the MSM magazines has begun to turn around and question whether or not Kosovo Independence is desirable. This has never happened before.

Actually, I am still thinking about that building scene you posted from Christmas in Belgrade.

This is a modern view of a main Belgrade building that NATO bombs hit in 1999.
