Young Evangelicals Embrace Huckabee as Old Guard Balks
The New York TImes ^ | January 13, 2008 | David Kirkpatrick

Posted on 01/12/2008 11:57:40 AM PST by mngran2

Much of the national leadership of the Christian conservative movement has turned a cold shoulder to the Republican presidential campaign of Mike Huckabee, wary of his populist approach to economic issues and his criticism of the Bush administration’s foreign policy. But that has only fired up Brett and Alex Harris.

The Harris brothers, 19-year-old evangelical authors and speakers who grew up steeped in the conservative Christian movement, are the creators of Huck’s Army, an online network that has connected 12,000 Huckabee campaign volunteers, including several hundred in Michigan, which votes Tuesday, and South Carolina, which votes Saturday.

They say they like Mr. Huckabee for the same reason many of their elders do not: “He reaches outside the normal Republican box,” Brett Harris said in an interview from his home near Portland, Ore.

The brothers fell for Mr. Huckabee last August when they saw him draw applause on “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” for explaining that he believed in a Christian obligation to care for prenatal “life” and also education, health care, jobs and other aspects of “life.” “It is a new kind of evangelical conservative position,” Brett Harris said. Alex Harris added, “And we are not going to have to be embarrassed about him.”

Mr. Huckabee, who was a Southern Baptist minister before serving as governor of Arkansas, is the only candidate in the presidential race who identifies himself as an evangelical. But instead of uniting conservative Christians, his candidacy is threatening to drive a wedge into the movement, potentially dividing its best-known national leaders from part of their base and upending assumptions that have held the right wing together for the last 30 years.

“With illegal immigration being such a huge issue, I am stunned that the two open border, amnesty promoters are the two top contenders at the moment!
I guess the ENEMEDIA can take the credit for that.”

Exactly. Here’s an example of how biased the media is. I get only CBS news so I’m forced to watch it. They haven’t mentioned Duncan Hunter’s name as a candidate in months. One of the few times they’ve mentioned Thompson since he entered the race, they showed a big photo of Huck, McCain, Rudy, Romney and a split screen with Fred and Ron Paul. That is such a powerful visual and influences the masses in marginalizing the ‘smaller’ two.

” Click HERE to find out how freeper’s felt about Mike Huckabee’s record when he was actually IN office. “

Too bad he’s made all the boneheaded moves he has since that time. We’re not supposed to be electing a preacher or a wanna be rock star. You won’t find any glowing posts from me about Huck.

I get only CBS news so I’m forced to watch it.

My condolences to you on only getting CBS.

WARNING...you may want to skip TV news all together!

Yep...I heard what Rush said.
I guess I should take his advice.

I, too, am shocked that the top two candidates are for open borders and amnesty.
But, then...I’m a Shiite Republican. ;o)

A number of crits vs. Huck are legit...the problem with most FReepers who dislike Huck is they rarely cite them!!!

Nonsense. Most here who dislike Huckabee have been very specific as to why. Repeatedly.

Judge not...

What? Are ye judging me (in thinking I'm judging Thompson?) Then here's my advice for you, based upon your very own standard: Judge not...

2. Huckabee was called of Christ to preach the gospel as a minister of the word. He forsook this office to become a politician. “Luke 9:62 “ And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his had to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

So what? (You've consigned Huckabee to hell?)

Jesus words are to be taken seriously. He is after all the one who will judge the issue you mention, not me.

My point is that he does not meet the standard of a sound committed evangelical, which standard is important to one who takes the bible seriously. He is portrayed as a great evangelical. In many ways, of which the text I pointed out is one, he fails to meet the biblical test. You disagree with that, fine. it is ultimately the Lord's to judge.

But the argument from his Christianity as a reason to vote for him, and he not just the media makes it an element of his campaign, makes it also both a political issue and a matter which one may question.
