MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. Asked about Fred Thompsons hatchet attack against him at Thursday's Republican debate, Mike Huckabee joked to Joe Scarborough that he thought Fred needs some Metamucil. I think it would help a lot if he gets some. You know, he was in a bad mood last night.
On the bus with reporters on Route 96 in Michigan from Lansing to Grand Rapids, Huckabee explained his Metamucil comment saying, You have to understand the context of the show .Its not quite as irreverent as Imus not quite Stephen Colbert but its serious topics with an edge.
I really do believe if people cant have some sense of humor as they approach this stuff, then it causes everybody to be so locked down and consultant driven that their campaigns become so boring because all theyre going to do is give this robotic answer to everything thats very carefully scripted. I promise you, you wont have moments like this, Huckabee said, gesturing to the handful of reporters that had gathered around him for an on-the-record conversation that would last about 40 minutes.
Does Romney do these? Huckabee asked the reporters. No, replied one. Neither does Thompson, said another.
If I thought I couldnt be a human being. That I gotta wait till six handlers tell me what I can and cant say and I have to read it, you know, its not worth it.
"Hi, how are you?"
"Constipated...and you?"
Others I've actually used: "Enigmatically mysterious...and you?"
"Swell and groovy."
Thats why we end up with people like him. The biggest danger to America is stupidity.
And people really WANT that in a POTUS? He looks more like Slick Lite everyday.
does this mean Huckabee is going to have a Metamucil costumed character following him at all his stops.
Huckabee comes across as an older phart.
I’ve learned that politicians are at least as prone as the rest of us to misspeaking and making intemperate verbal outbursts. I don’t believe anything they say unless I hear it from the candidate himself (not operatives) at least three times. Huckabee unfortunately speaks at an intellectually more sophisticated level than most Americans but apparently lacks much to say. Part of the problem occurs because Huckabee continues to develop positions on issues of national and global importance and still lacks an adequate understanding of international affairs. He yet can develop such an understanding with adequate speed though voracious reading and deep thought, but time is not on his side.
As an idiot-American, I cannot determine definitively what Huckabee meant with this “joke” or whether he intended what he meant or meant what he intended. This statement moreover clearly doesn’t indicate anything substantiative but rather apparently just critiques the style and mood of an intra-partisan competitor. It’s particularly difficult to dig through the fluff with Huckabee, but Republicans won with bloviator Warren Gamaliel Harding in 1920, so don’t blow off Huckabee yet.
You guys are so blind it isn’t even funny. If you for one second think that an Ultra conservative like Fred Thompson is electable... you are DEAD wrong. If we (GOP) want to have any chance of winning this race, we need to have someone who is not so far right.
Mike Huckabee did not need to refute all the things Fred said about him because he did so during the debate. Bottom line is that Huck was the Gov. in a very democratic state. I shouldn’t have to explain how that might effect his record.
-Huck wants the FairTax which is the most conservative of any plan.
-He wants to help out the Middle Class, but he has NEVER once said he doesn’t want to help the rich.
-Bottom line is... Fred will not win this nomination. McCain is doubtful. Romney will not win. Huck is the best bet. He is leading in the national polls. Many people find him refreshing.
Why is there so much hatred for Huck on this sight?
This is why the democrats would love to see him nominated. A lot of republicans would do as you have indicated, therefore handing the democrats the election.
I do not trust Huckabee, after looking at his record as governor, and hearing some of his ideas.
Besides Huckabee seems goofy if you ask me.
I will probably not sit out, if he is the republican candidate, because there are other important things to consider like who gets nominated to the US Supreme Court and such.
If the Huckster is what you consider to be Presidential with all of his sarcastic wit and constant appearances playing the guitar, my guess is that you supported the other smarta$$, instrument player who was also from Hope, Arkansas.
Can you just imagine what he would say about a world leader who criticized him? I want a President who acts with adult demeanor.
Huckabee has the evangelical vote locked up. It doesn't matter what he says, because there is a huge emotional attachment on the part of his supporters.
Can you imagine the outcry if Romney had said the same thing about McCain? Yet McCain gets away with his snarky personal attacks without a whimper from the MSM.
Those who support Huckabee must be in favor of larger government. He is a nanny-statist just like any Democrat. A national ban on public smoking? C'mon folks, wake up!
Rush Limbaugh said it yesterday— you can’t talk people out of an emotional attachment. People who support Huckabee identify with him. Logic and facts are not significant to people like that. He’s a “Christian” like me so he must be the best candidate, etc.
Did you know that Huckabee was a PR man for a televangelist? (I forget which one.) Ugh!
kjam22,here is the point: Huck isn’t in the least presidential, and he never answers questions, he attacks. He has given terrible answers which he changes and pretends he never said otherwise (of course they all do that, his original answers were worse —— democrat answers). in iowa and NH huck and johnboy won with the cross over independent and democrat votes. Republicans are letting the MSM and democrats pick their candidates.
And he called antiamnesty folks racists. It blows my mind that 80% of americans are antiamnesty and yet huck and johnboy seem to be on their way to november.
James Robinson. That was a lot of years ago.
The only thing that surprises me about Huckabee’s comment is that he suggested Fred try Metamucil rather than snake oil.
I wasn’t aware we are choosing a comedian-in-chief or the person with the best quips. I know that humor has its place in any campaign but Huckabee seems to substitute humor(mostly bad humor) for serious rebuttal or thoughtful analysis. It’s a fact, though, that the candidates who will finally be chosen by the MSM to represent each party will be the two who are the most shallow and have the least substance.
I heard Fred’s response to this this morning...paraphrasing, that this is bathroom humor and isn’t really a desirable quality for a Presidential candidate.
I find this remark somewhat offensive under the context that he was a Baptist Minister.
Besides, when it comes to wit, Huckabee would surely lose to Fred T.
Your one sentence analysis sums the entire thing up perfectly.
I am well aware that evangelicals are an important part of the conservative base. I also know that many do NOT support Huckabee.
However, it saddens me that so many on our side are using “identity politics” with regards to Huckabee and supporting him for that one reason. I thought only liberals did the identity politics thing.
kalee, you should be hired as a political commentator. With that one sentence, you said more than the Beltway Boys say in one hour.
