Kerry is being a bit disingenuous here. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if John Weaver had stirred the pot a bit on his own but the offer came from the Kerry camp. There is no way Kerry would be confused as to the details because he spent four or five days at McCain's "ranch" near Sedona. There was a freep at the top of the hill where the road leads down to the house.
McCain was offered VP with unprecedented powers - control over all things military. It would have been a virtual co-presidency. McCain's response was "I am a Republican."
This account came from a McCain staffer and I have no reason to disbelieve it.

I think it was shortly after what you mention that he appeared with GWB giving him full support for GWB’s re-election campaign, there were several other events where the 2 appeared together after this.
