Public Radio Broadcast 'Deep Fried Christ' Skit By Penny Starr CNSNews.com Senior Staff Writer January 11, 2008
(CNSNews.com) - Some of the people who tuned into public radio station KCPW in St. Lake City, Utah, recently weren't laughing at the satire poking fun at a Mike Huckabee "family recipe." More than a few of them, in fact, were outraged by the "Huck and the Eucharist" skit, which aired Jan. 7 on the "Fair Game with Faith Salie" program.
The transcript, in part, said: "Try this Huckabee family favorite. Deep-Fried Body of Christ - boring holy wafers no more. Take one Eucharist. Preferably post transubstantiation. Deep-fry in fat, not vegetable oil, ladies, until crispy. Serve piping hot."
Many sent e-mails to Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights. "At that point, we decided to issue a press release to 500 media outlets around the country," Donohue told Cybercast News Service.
The press release said the Catholic League was lodging a formal complaint with Ed Sweeney, general manager of KCPW - who also was the recipient of more than 500 angry e-mails in the days following the airing of the program.
Public Radio International (PRI), which produces the show and then distributes it to KCPW and other public radio stations around the country, pulled the content, and Faith Salie issued an apology on her program on Thursday.
"It happened, and it's unfortunate," Sweeney told Cybercast News Service, adding that public radio stations don't know what the content of programs are until they air. "I myself am a practicing Catholic, and I sleep well at night."

A real knee-slapper there. I’m glad somebody was around to tell me that it was humor. That’s the only way I’d have known.
“I myself am a practicing Catholic, and I sleep well at night.”
Suuuuuure you are, honey.....suuuuuuure you are.
Our tax dollars at work?
I just find that hard to believe. Why would someone denegrate their most personal convictions?
So this twit Sweeney doesn’t know what the content of his programing will be?That’s just a lame excuse, almost laughable.Someone should ask him if they plan to screen content in the future,or can we expect another outrage over which he has no control?
I’m gonna burn down the Danish Embassy.(We still need to defund NPR)
Waiting for the sequel;”Boiled Beard of the Prophet.”
“Shave one crazy pedophile, put the mangy lice-eaten straw in pot,add hot blood of murdered infidels, bring to a boil, strain through prayer rug, season with curry—feeds 72 virgins.”
Only God hating libs watch this station anymore.
Cut taxpayer funding.
This is the quote that disturbs me. What radio, TV or print media DOESN'T review material to be aired? Am I naive?
All is fair when the media belittle Christ’s name. Where’s the ACLU defending religious rights? Ooops wrong faith to defend for them. Anyway the skit is lame and not even funny.
Enjoy the wafers...it maybe the closest celebration of communion you ever participate in.
Um, yes, at least with regard to most programming on these stations.
There's essentially no prior screening; they don't have the personnel for it. It comes off the network, is often put on tape or in the server for broadcast later, and seldom does anyone at the station hear significant parts of it until it airs.
And maybe not even then <}B^)
“By these stations” I take it you mean Public Radio or most broadcast stations? And thanks for the reply, I really never thought that any public media would practice this.
Gah. Firesign Theatre got there first, and they were funnier and more original than these clowns.
defunding National Pubic Radio and TV (CPB)..not easy when republicans support the trash too.
“The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) received $393 million in federal tax dollars for fiscal year 2008. In 2007, according to a spokesman for CPB, the agency gave a grant of $200,000 to the producers of “Fair Game with Faith Salie” for research and development of the show. KCPW, like all public radio stations, receives tax funding through CPB.”
$393 million of our dollars folks, of which 200,000 went to ridicule Christians. Passed by Congress.
(Anti)-Catholic ping :(
