Racial tensions roil Democratic race
Politico ^ | Jan 11, 2008 | Ben Smith

A series of comments from Senator Hillary Clinton, her husband, and her supporters are spurring a racial backlash and adding a divisive edge to the presidential primary as the candidates head south to heavily African-American South Carolina.

The comments, which ranged from the New York Senator appearing to diminish the role of Martin Luther King Jr. in the civil rights movement – an aide later said she misspoke – to Bill Clinton dismissing Sen. Barack Obama’s image in the media as a “fairy tale” –generated outrage on black radio, black blogs, and cable television. And now they've drawn the attention of prominent African-American politicians.

“A cross-section of voters are alarmed at the tenor of some of these statements,” said a Obama spokeswoman Candice Tolliver, who said that Clinton would have to decide whether or not she owed anyone an apology.

“There’s a groundswell of reaction to these comments – and not just these latest comments but really a pattern, or a series of comments that we’ve heard for several months,” she said. “Folks are beginning to wonder: Is this really an isolated situation or is there something bigger behind all of this?”

Clinton supporters responded to that suggestion with their own outrage.

“To say that there is a pattern of racist comments coming out of the Hillary campaign is ridiculous,” said Ohio Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones. “All of the world knows the commitment of President Clinton and Senator Clinton to civil rights issues – and not only the commitment in terms of words but in terms of deeds.”

It would be great if the Blacks decided not to vote for Her Shrillness either in the nominating process or (perish the thought) in the election if she is nominated. I don’t think the Dems could win without them.

Don’t mean she wants to lose to a *minority*.

Imagine what they say behind closed doors?

I guess I don't know. If know about lots of lip service and pandering, but what were their deeds?

I love this! All the time Billy Boy campaigned and while in office, he and his ‘wife’ loved to stir the ‘racial’ pot and force these issues (valid or not) to the forefront of the media and remind Americans always that “there was a time when ...” well you know. Now, it has come home to bite them in their respective a(*&^!! Ain’t politics great?!

I don't understand all of the outrage...Isn't old BJ Clinton black, himself?

Name one deed. For the life of me I can’t come up with a single instance. Lotsa lip, but no deeds.

It’s an amazing phenomenon.

Two people aspiring to be President of the United States. The leader of the free world, as it were. The most powerful elected office in the world.

Between them, they can’t become the victim fast enough.

Clinton criticizes Obama’s inexperience - Obama camp cries racism
Obama criticizes Hillary’s policies - Hillary camp cries sexism

You know what will get a lot of respect from me? An edict from EITHER of them to anyone who follows them that says “Of the 300,000,000 people in this country, I am in the top 5 in the running for President. I am not a victim. Do not cry racism / sexism in my name. “

But that will never happen. It is too ingrained in the liberal democratic psyche that all blacks and women are inherently victims, therefore when anything goes against them it’s because they are members of a victim class.

Neither of these two whiners deserves to run for President.
