Vogue Magazine Attempts to Bring Partial Birth Abortion into Vogue

NEW YORK, January 10, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Cleverly marketing legal abortion as a boon to women's emancipation has been the most important task of the abortion industry and lobby for thirty years. In this month's edition, the gruesome procedure of partial birth abortion has been given a style makeover by the world's most influential fashion magazine, Vogue.

The magazine offers the article's description: "When Lori Campbell's second pregnancy developed complications, she was faced with a painful decision.  But she was thankful it was hers to make." What follows is a paean to legalized late-term abortion and a series of long complaints about the efforts of pro-life Americans to make it illegal.

In the article, "Private Lives," that appears in the January 2008 issue of the US edition of Vogue, Lori Campbell describes her decision in 1998 to have a late term abortion by the method usually referred to as "partial birth." In partial birth abortion the child is extracted from the mother's womb, until only the head remains in the birth canal; he is then killed by suctioning out the brains and collapsing the skull. This type of abortion is called "intact dilation and extraction" by the medical community, and was banned in the US in 2003. In 2007, a US Supreme Court decision upheld the constitutionality of the ban.

Campbell describes how her water broke at 22 weeks into her second pregnancy, and doctors told her and her husband that the child would be unlikely to survive. Campbell justifies her decision to kill her child, saying she was sparing her needless suffering. Campbell's life was not threatened by the pregnancy.

"I chose what I believe was the path of least suffering, for myself, my husband, our future children, and mostly for the baby inside me."

Campbell complains that the term partial-birth abortion "is also inherently judgmental". "A partial-birth abortion, if you must call it that.  One born out of love."

"How can I agree to a partial-birth abortion and not feel like a bad person?  It preys on women in a weakened state - women who already likely believe they are 'bad' because they have failed as mothers."

"In my case, an incompetent cervix threatened the life of a fetus otherwise healthy and so close to meeting the world.  All she needed was another lousy couple of weeks, I kept telling myself.  But I had failed her.  My incompetence, I felt, extended well beyond the cervix into every fiber of my being.  I didn't need another person, or the government, to confirm it."

With Vogue's usual mastery of imagery, Campbell has been depicted as an archetype of the beautiful happy young mother, with both her and her daughter dressed immaculately in clothes strongly reminiscent of the idealized 1950's family.

The iconic magazine, a worldwide institution, was founded in 1892 and publishes editions in Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom and the United States.

Vogue, owned by Conde Nast Publications, is a major engine of the women's movement, but is often criticized for valuing solely material wealth, appearance and social position and is regularly accused of creating an unhealthy weight-obsessed idealized body-image among young women.

Many have known this, about the so called and imaginary, gay gene, for quite some time. If it is ever discovered, that will be the end of abortion. As it is now, the homosexual activists are behind the abortion agenda 100%.

This makes me sick down to my bones.

Our society needs to extend the right to life to these babies. That’s one reason why I support Hunter, who sponsors the Right To Life Amendment.

“OMG!!!
My niece-in-law had her water break around the same time. She spent weeks in the hospital and her son stayed in the NICU for a time as well.

He is now six and one of the smartest children I know. I love that boy more than words can say.

What a horrible decision this woman made!!!!!!!!!”

I know a woman who had this same problem with both of her pregnancies - the first pregnany being twins.

It was dicey - but she is living with 3 beautiful children.

So let me get this straight. The baby was “unlikely” to survive. The pregnancy did not threaten the woman’s life. If she doesn’t have the fortitude to try to tough out a few more weeks of pregnancy given these circumstances, she certainly doesn’t have the fortitude to be a mother. Perhaps she should consider permanent sterilization.

I knew a democrat once who was convinced that partial birth abortion was something the republicans made up...............

...Like some my own family members, until I explained it in detail over burgers and beer at a family reunion/gathering. I'm always a lot of fun to have around at parties. = D

Campbell complains that the term partial-birth abortion "is also inherently judgmental". No, fool, it is the precise description of what kind of murder is done in the 'procedure'. Don't we just love the idiotic left which uses the most rare example to try and plead for wholesale slaughter of alive unborn children?... God help us! Come quickly, Lord Jesus.

The goddess had to retain her right over life and death using her body ... selfish woman working to legitimize the slaughter of cleft palate babies.

The poor woman needs a change of heart and prayers. My blood tests came back a high indication that my child might have down’s syndrome and honestly I thought to myself for a fleeting moment - abortion. How on earth was I going to take care of a handicapped child, but in my moment of weakness, I prayed to the Lord to forgive me of my sin. I suffered through four miscarriages already and I really wanted and love this blessing from god, please help me carry this child to term and it happened, a miracle - my daughter was born healthy and a beautiful child. Listen if the Lord can reach out and reform this manhattan club kid, there is hope for everyone./Just Asking - seoul62......

Oddly, I've found that lots of people who don't object to aborting any-old-baby, will get profoundly disturbed if the baby is a member of some identified community.

For instance, many pro-abort feminists are troubled by sex-selective abortions where it's the girls who are being killed.

At the Nuremburg War Crimes trials 60 years ago, no objection was made to abortion "in general," but Nazis were convicted of war crimes, not only for the crime of the forced abortions of Jews, but even for the crime of merely "encouraging" the abortion of Slavs.

Many liberals would be profoundly upset by the selective abortion of, supposedly, genetic gay babies (but not, strangely enough, about the selective abortion of Downs babies.)

There's even a certain sub-species of FReeper who never gave two hoots about abortion per se, but now finds him/herself worried about the abortion of white born-in-Americans (as opposed to, say, swarthy Muslim immigrants.)

Strange. And ugly.

"But Tiller the Killer performs more than 400 per year, for reasons so silly as the ‘mother’ being depressed."

Particularly odious because (1) ambivalence about having a child (often linked to hormonal changes) is so common that it's practically a symptom of pregnancy; and (2) abortion is a major cause of depression.

"Depression" is never a "silly" thing, and in some cases can be serious. It can often respond positively to improved nutrition, lifestyle changes, and counseling. But abortion is not a treament for depression.

She did not want to mess with neonatal units. She did not want a live but struggling baby.

Once the brains are sucked out, the baby can be registered as a Democrat.

The rules of political correctness are very complicated, and they are constantly being adjusted by the Masters and Mistresses of Political Correctness.

One of the most basic rules is that you must keep up with the latest rules and strictly adhere to them, or you will be booted out of the Camp of Political Correctness. You are not permitted to just agree with 90% and disagree with 10%. That is unacceptable.

So you have to keep up with the latest developments, and call in to HQ at regular intervals to be sure you are with the program.

As you say, Downs Syndrome fetuses are politically incorrect, and should be aborted. Girl fetuses may be aborted if they have Downs Syndrome, but NOT because you want to get rid of a girl and have a boy instead. But a boy fetus can be aborted for any reason.

Black fetuses should always be aborted, BUT THIS MUST NEVER BE TALKED ABOUT. It’s understood that you are aborting black and third world babies to help young, disadvantaged black and third world girls get on with their lives without impediments, and not because you want to eliminate the black race as genetically inferior in some Darwinian sense of the word.

Und so weiter.
