Evangelicals Against Mitt
The American Spectator ^ | 1/3/2008 | Carrie Sheffield

Posted on 01/08/2008 4:09:13 PM PST by tantiboh

Mitt Romney is facing an unexpected challenge in Iowa from rival Mike Huckabee, who has enjoyed a groundswell of support from religious voters, particularly evangelical Christians wary of the clean-cut former Massachusetts governor because of his Mormon religion.

The common worry among evangelicals is that if Romney were to capture the White House, his presidency would give legitimacy to a religion they believe is a cult. Since the LDS church places heavy emphasis on proselytizing -- there are 53,000 LDS missionaries worldwide -- many mainstream Christians are afraid that Mormon recruiting efforts would increase and that LDS membership rolls would swell.

...

THE ONLY PROBLEM with those fears is that they don't add up. Evangelicals may be surprised to learn that the growth of church membership in Massachusetts slowed substantially during Romney's tenure as governor. In fact, one could make the absurdly simplistic argument that Romney was bad for Mormonism.

...

ONE WAY TO GAUGE what might happen under a President Romney would be to look at what happened during the period of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Held in Salt Lake City, they were dubbed the "Mormon Olympics."

...

Despite all the increased attention, worldwide the Church grew only slightly, and in fact in the year leading up to the games the total number of congregations fell. Overall, from 2000 to 2004, there was a 10.9 percent increase in memberships and a 3.6 percent increase in congregations.

...

The LDS church is likely to continue its current modest-but-impressive growth whether or not Romney wins the White House. Perhaps the only real worry for evangelicals is that, if elected, the former Massachusetts governor will demonstrate to Americans that Mormons don't have horns.

Carrie Sheffield, a member of the LDS Church, is a writer living in Washington, D.C.

Wow, DU, you got not one, not two, but -three- separate insult posts out of that response!

Darth, you’re not very good at this game. You may want to watch for a while first.

I’ll help you out: when a person debunks your claims with evidence and logic, it’s not effective to respond with insults. Try refuting, it’s funner!

The novelty of Mormonism heresies are striking for a short season, but Salvation never grows old. Mormonism sells Mormonism, not Salvation. You’ve been a Mormon missionary, you ought to know that. If it is not He who is in you, to will and to do of His good pleasure—instead of ‘all that you can do’ ... well, son, you know the rest and are tired of it. That ought to tell you somehting, tantiboh.

It would be, wouldn’t it?

Yes, you are a bigot. Noted. Thanks.

It’s good that you’ve admitted that hate of Romney for his Mormonism is bigotry.

I've admitted nothing nor have I have disparaged Mr. Romney in any way...based on his religion. You are a bigot, in even trying that tact.

Next.

We don’t have to reason with heretics nor discuss doctrine with you. There is no academic nor theological argument you can make to justify your position, period. It doesn’t exist. We just command you in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth to repent of your false teachings. Mormonism has already been proven to be a cult by credible Christian apologetics ie. Ankerberg, et. al.

Maybe you’re talking about different Mormons? I preached about Christ when I was a missionary.

Nice try Osage Orange. That logical triple lutz jump didn’t quite succeed, though.

Keep practicing, you’ll get it.

Of course not! Why persuade and convince when “You’re a hell-bound cultist” is so much easier?

I’ve read the arguments from the Christian apologetics in detail. The information is so overwhelming against Mormonism it doesn’t need to be explained as God commands men everywhere to repent. Reason is not necessary in dealing with cults.

Actually, it is a little-known -- or -recognized -- fact that "Mormons" believe that Jesus Christ is indeed Jehovah, the God of the Old Testament and that Elohim is God the Father, or "THE God," as you correctly called Him?

So much for claims that Jesus is diminished by LDS theology.

BTW, why would Jesus cry out on Calvary asking, "My Father, why hath thou forsaken me?"

Why would God the Father refer to His Son, "In whom I am well-pleased" as Jesus emerged from the waters of baptism in the Jordan River?

And why would the young Jesus state that He was "about my Father's business" on the occasion of his teaching the scholars, rabbis, and "doctors" in the Temple?

Not interested in your hell-bound cult

Too bad, this was your chance to accept the Gospel, but you didn't want to follow the Bible and Try the Spirits...

As for Cult, any religion you can name is a cult, just by being organized enough to have a name. "English"; where words mean things.

As for Hell bound, I don't believe membership in any earthly church guarantees you a place in Heaven or Hell. Salvation is an individual thing...

Have a nice life...

They say that actions spek louder than words.

In this case, I can't hear you.

The first step is to establish the biblical doctrine that there is only one God. Then, you find that each of the persons is called God, each creates, each was involved in Jesus' resurrection, each indwells, etc. Therefore, God is one, but the one God is in three simultaneous persons. Please note that the idea of a composite unity is not a foreign concept to the Bible; after all, man and wife are said to be one flesh. The idea of a composite unity of persons is spoken of by God in Genesis (Gen. 2:24).

There is only one God

The first step is to establish how many Gods exist: one! Isaiah 43:10; 44:6,8; 45:5,14,18,21,22; 46:9; 47:8; John 17:3; 1 Cor. 8:5-6; Gal. 4:8-9

"I am the LORD, and there is no other; besides Me there is no God" (Isaiah 45:5).

“Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel And his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: ‘I am the first and I am the last, And there is no God besides Me," (Isaiah 44:6).

"I am the Lord, and there is no other; besides Me there is no God, (Isaiah 55:5).

The Trinity

FATHER SON HOLY SPIRIT Called God: Phil. 1:2 John 1:1,14; Col. 2:9 Acts 5:3-4

Creator: Isaiah 64:8 John 1:3; Col. 1:15-17 Job 33:4, 26:13

Resurrects: 1 Thess. 1:10 John 2:19, 10:17 Rom. 8:11

Indwells: 2 Cor. 6:16 Col. 1:27 John 14:17

Everywhere: 1 Kings 8:27 Matt. 28:20 Psalm 139:7-10

All knowing: 1 John 3:20 John 16:30; 21:17 1 Cor. 2:10-11

Sanctifies: 1 Thess. 5:23 Heb. 2:11 1 Pet. 1:2

Life giver: Gen. 2:7: John 5:21 John 1:3; 5:21 2 Cor. 3:6,8

Fellowship: 1 John 1:3 1 Cor. 1:9 2 Cor. 13:14; Phil. 2:1

Eternal: Psalm 90:2 Micah 5:1-2 Rom. 8:11; Heb. 9:14

A Will: Luke 22:42 Luke 22:42 1 Cor. 12:11

Speaks: Matt. 3:17; Luke 9:25 Luke 5:20; 7:48 Acts 8:29; 11:12; 13:2

Love: John 3:16 Eph. 5:25 Rom. 15:30

Searches the heart: Jer. 17:10 Rev. 2:23 1 Cor. 2:10

We belong to: John 17:9 John 17:6 . . .

Savior: 1 Tim. 1:1; 2:3; 4:10 2 Tim. 1:10; Titus 1:4; 3:6 . . .

We serve: Matt. 4:10 Col. 3:24 . . .

Believe in: John 14:1 John 14:1 . . .

Gives joy: . . . John 15:11 John 14:7

Judges: John 8:50 John 5:21,30 . . .

Therefore, the doctrine of the Trinity is arrived at by looking at the whole of scripture, not in a single verse. It is the doctrine that there is only one God, not three, and that the one God exists in three persons: Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

It’s not a question of “not having to,” but rather, one of your lack of Priesthood authority to do so, so spare us the chest-beating and go back to learning basic Bible stories until you catch on to what has been said.....
