Mitt Romney is facing an unexpected challenge in Iowa from rival Mike Huckabee, who has enjoyed a groundswell of support from religious voters, particularly evangelical Christians wary of the clean-cut former Massachusetts governor because of his Mormon religion.
The common worry among evangelicals is that if Romney were to capture the White House, his presidency would give legitimacy to a religion they believe is a cult. Since the LDS church places heavy emphasis on proselytizing -- there are 53,000 LDS missionaries worldwide -- many mainstream Christians are afraid that Mormon recruiting efforts would increase and that LDS membership rolls would swell.
...
THE ONLY PROBLEM with those fears is that they don't add up. Evangelicals may be surprised to learn that the growth of church membership in Massachusetts slowed substantially during Romney's tenure as governor. In fact, one could make the absurdly simplistic argument that Romney was bad for Mormonism.
...
ONE WAY TO GAUGE what might happen under a President Romney would be to look at what happened during the period of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Held in Salt Lake City, they were dubbed the "Mormon Olympics."
...
Despite all the increased attention, worldwide the Church grew only slightly, and in fact in the year leading up to the games the total number of congregations fell. Overall, from 2000 to 2004, there was a 10.9 percent increase in memberships and a 3.6 percent increase in congregations.
...
The LDS church is likely to continue its current modest-but-impressive growth whether or not Romney wins the White House. Perhaps the only real worry for evangelicals is that, if elected, the former Massachusetts governor will demonstrate to Americans that Mormons don't have horns.
Carrie Sheffield, a member of the LDS Church, is a writer living in Washington, D.C.

What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?
LOL...on the same wave length!!
HMmmm...
They don't even have to agree as to WHICH 'god', just that there is Something higher than them.
I'm not a Biblical scholar but it would be my opinion that its not Biblical at all.
Not quite.
They do say he said it; but they will not admit that they STILL feel this way.
And you are still here too.

You're in for a big disappointment. Check Elsie's message history. I'm afraid its spilled over for many years already. Post Reply | Private Reply | To 1,188 | View Replies |

I think the title should remain. These Mormon stalkers have been around for years on the FR's religious threads bashing any individual who would care to listen. They're just visiting over here in the "news" sections since a Mormon is running for president. They believe its their ministry. Post Reply | Private Reply | To 1,161 | View Replies |

Pot meet kettle, but then that is what happens when you live in Denial, huh T
Or water to the wicked witch.
Not at all. I’m simply saying someone can be a good President despite their errant religious beliefs.
The Jesus of Christianity left us proof for everything he said and did. He fulfilled OT prophecy. He rose from the dead, which was witnessed by hundreds. He ascended into heaven which was witnessed by his disciples. All books of Scripture were written during the Apostolic Era which ended with the death of John. The books that were written were read by other witnesses to the events.
Christians stand on the Rock.
Mormons stand on sinking sand.
Your church is based on tablets that were "discovered" by your founder that supposedly gave a new revelation. There were no other credible witnesses and these tablets have never been put on display. Your church has added to the Scriptures with your BOM and the unsubstantiated claim that the events described in it are true.
The belief of your church that you will evolve into Gods with planets you will rule is not Christian. The belief that God was once a man on another planet and that he evolved into our God is not Christian. The belief that Jesus was a spirit child of God the Father like Satan is not Christian. There is nothing Christian about Mormonism other than the use of the name.
In the end if Romney is the Pub nominee the Rats will win because of this. While you will find a portion of the Christian base willing to vote for him there will be enough who will vote with their feet and that will elect the Rat. As a conservative my best hope at this point is for a brokered convention.
lol.
I get really uncomfortable when Mormons say he didn't say it. Not quite. They do say he said it; but they will not admit that they STILL feel this way.
There are those, however, who think that any positive exposure to Mormonism, as would evidently be the case were there to be a Mormon president, would spread knowledge of Mormonism far and wide; that many more people would be duped into believing it and therefore lose their souls.
Your Founder and past leaders have.
It's just too bad your Founder and early leaders didn't "follow the Scriptures" when that POLYGAMY thing came along.
Can a DEMON lie and SAY that he is 'god'?
It's just when they learn the REST of the 'truth' of Mormonism, they should just slip away from all the extraneous junk that is found in the LDS Organization®.
MormonDude(In between the plagarized BIBLE verses, that is.)
The above is STILL in force by the LDS Organization®!
I can go back years and get some of your priceless bigoted remarks. But these will suffice. have a nice day.
Having Romney as the Republican candidate is going to energize a certain percentage of democrat voters simply to vote against a 'non-christian', giving these cinos a sort of satisfaction that they have 'served good' in opposing heresy.
Having Romney as the Republican name on the ballot will 'de-energize' a significant percentage of Christian Conservative voters, and too many will actually avoid the voting booth all together unless there is a Christian initiative to draw them to the polls ... such as the two weakest points of Romney's political history, abortion or embryonic stem cell exploitation and/or homosexual rights.
These are the trends which have me in a quandry as to how to write effectively enough to get Conservative Chrisitans to vote! The Romney/Mormon campaign to shout bigot and mormon hater in order to squelch open opposition to Mormonism and thus to Romney will not 'de-energize' cinos who vote democrat. In fact, it will have the opposite effect on democrats and a 'de-energizing' effect on Conservative Christians. It may get him the party nomination since the de-energizing effect works to his favor in suppressing Conservative votes. It will sweep the Rodham-rodent in on a wave of democrat voting if the media uses a simialr tactic when the general election campaigns heat up.
[... the Mormons I know are about as decent,
hard-working, and honest people as you can find...]
Does that make what they profess true?
Absolutely not. Being good doesn’t get you into
heaven. Being saved gets you into heaven.
I can tell you I am a strong evangelical, and I did vote for Mitt Romney.
The man is moral, he is a proven leader, and he holds conservative positions on the issues of the day. What else could we ask for in a President? In my opinion, nothing.
Would I prefer Mitt be a hard-wired evangelical? Well, I suppose so, all things being equal. But in the end, I really don't care. He isn't going to be choosing my theology--the Bible is my guide. The Bible's main teachings do not say we must choose theologically pure men as our civic leaders.
On the other hand, it does show--repeatedly--a truth we can all see. God uses imperfect people all of the time to accomplish his purposes in this world. He prefers those people be good, moral and righteous--and that is the kind of person I see in Mitt Romney. Have a nice day.
Great analysis. I fall right into that group. I am pretty sure I can't vote for Romney if he's the nominee, because of his Mormonism. I already have concerns about him because of his pro-abortion position in the past, gay marriage in the state he was Gov. of, and health care program he helped promote. I can never vote for the Rats, so I'll be left doing a write in ballot.
It's the claim, "we are Christians" that makes it so difficult.
Amen!
