Princess Obama

Princess Obama Tuesday, 8th January 2008

Watching the cresting of the Obama tidal wave, it seems that the US is having its Princess Diana moment. Hillary Clinton, turning on the tears but only succeeding once again in thus underscoring her own cynical calculation, wails fruitlessly that Obama is all warm fuzzy feeling but no substance.

‘Wait a minute,’ she said, ‘what is the substance here? What, as famously was said years ago, where's the beef? You know, where is the reality?’

Welcome to Planet Diana. It was only with the death of the People’s Princess that the extent of Britain’s transformation from a country of reason, intelligence, stoicism, self-restraint and responsibility into a land of credulousness, emotional incontinence, sentimentality, irresponsibility and self-obsession became shatteringly apparent. Princess Diana was an icon of the new Britain because she embodied precisely those latter characteristics.

It became clear that politicians could score remarkable short-term success if they too got in touch with their inner trauma and felt everyone else’s pain. Bill Clinton (hideous irony for Hillary) was the first to realise this and made it his political signature. Tony Blair, whose lip periodically quivered with precision timing, had it in spades. David Cameron has it; so too does Obama.

The effect is electric, but short-lived. That is because Dianafication is essentially empty, amoral, untruthful and manipulative; eventually voters see through it and realise they have been played for suckers. But while it lasts -- and it creates presidents and prime ministers -- reason doesn’t get a look in. Warm fuzzy feelings win hands down because they anaesthetise reality and blank out altogether those difficult issues which require difficult decisions. Obama appears to be on the wrong side of just about every important issue going

The Obama princess sweeps the Clinton princess out to sea. Works for me.

One terror attack on US interest, or one nuclear attack anywhere in the world, and Obama will be shown for what he really is, a naive waif.

Liberalism has ALWAYS been about how you FEEL rather than what you think.

One of the first articles I ever posted here was:

Britain’s Lowest moment—the frenzy over Di

And to me, the smarmy, self-pitying mass hysteria over “that international airhead” was symbolic of much of what was, and remains, wrong with modern, celebrity-driven society.

Keep you seatbelts fastened, folks- it’s going to be a wild ride to the elections...

Adults, accept and really welcome the status quo

Starting with the Boomers, Americans began to go out of their way NOT to be perceived as adults. Extending adolescence into one's 50's and 60's is pretty much considered normal.

Post-modernism couples a religious belief in change for the hell of it, with emotional infantilism.

Benazir Bhutto's assassination was just the latest in a string of events that have already demonstrated this. Folks don't want to be bothered with it -- "clean and articulate" is much more important to them, right now.

The other “hideous irony” here (as the author so felicitously turned the phrase) is that the Hildabeast also was selling only the warm and fuzzies, except . . . oops! . . . she was found out to be neither warm nor fuzzy.

Hillary had nothing but “vote for me because I’m a woman,” “vote for me because I was First Lady (what was THAT about ??),” “vote for me because I was wronged and stood by my man,” “vote for me as a way to get Bill back” and on and on.

I do think Obama is dangerous, but not as dangerous as Hillary/Bubba would have been. However, the question does remain open.

I agree. Obama is likely to win the presidency. The question is how do conservatives put in place any measures to keep him somewhat in check.

I am all for the inspirational side of his story. But his policies, in particular toward the war, must be thwarted.

Can we depend on the Republicans to bring balance here? I don’t know.

It’s needs to be repeated that Hildy made this reply in response to a question about who did her hair.

Fact.

I would rather have Michelle Obama as First Lady than Bubba as First Laddie (as Hildy says their Scottish friends suggested).

I so agree with you.

“Change” rhetoric is just pablum. But babies like it, so . . .
