Edwards Adviser Trippi: Hillary Campaign Is Broke By Greg Sargent - January 7, 2008, 11:45AM

Edwards senior adviser Joe Trippi has a theory about the Clinton campaign: He says that it's broke, or will be soon enough.

"There's a good chance that they're on the ropes financially," Trippi argued in an interview by cell phone from New Hampshire. "I can guarantee you their money is drying up. I don't think anyone is contributing to them."

Trippi was giving voice to a theory that's been moving around in political circles of late -- that the Hillary campaign's massive spending over the past couple months, combined with the fundraising slowdown that will inevitably attend Obama's victory over her in Iowa and possibly in New Hampshire, will ultimately leave the Hillary camp without the resources it needs to keep up its spending levels through the later primaries, as it needs to do.

The Hillary campaign had $35 million in cash on hand for the primary as of mid-October. There's no way of knowing for sure how much she's spent -- or raised -- since then until the next filing comes out.

Trippi -- who knows something about frontrunner campaigns petering out from his experiences with the Dean campaign in 2004 -- theorizes that Hillary's current level of spending will prove impossible to sustain for as long as she needs to sustain it, particularly since Obama's victory in Iowa and possible win in New Hampshire could unleash a flood of contributions for his campaign. It's unusual for senior campaign operatives to speculate about rival campaigns in such process-y detail.

"They're spending 20 million a month," Trippi said. "She had 400 organizers in Iowa, spent seven million on TV, had massive phone-banking and direct mail...I don't know how much longer they can go on

You mean she may have exaggerated the amount of money she had on hand.
Have other candidates done this?

I understand that the way the Clinton’s treat people, they are dropping like flys. Just look at the list of people that have died or disappeared over time. Would you like to be close to them? I wouldn’t and I wouldn’t want this country in their hands again.........esecially Hillary’s.

Plus, she was counting on all that Chicom cash through “bundler” Hsu, currently in prison (where SHE should be).

If she gets that low on cash, Bill will write a check or two from his bank account in the Cayman Islands. There has to be at least $50 million stashed away.

Emily's List will always be good for a couple of mill for Hillary.

I wish it were true, but the World's Smartest Woman already has tens of millions stashed in dozens of bank accounts.

Further, she can raise much more through making a few phone calls to Hollywierd, the ChiCom's, people who want to buy pardons, AlGore's Buddhist monks, Chinese restaurant workers, and other Rat special interests.

"China" said Hillary as she gazed into the cabinet. We've gotten money out of China before, right?

Yeh, but that was when everything was a Hsu in.

They have converted everything to cash to pay the voters in the South. In some areas of the South, no one votes for free.

Very. The early support for candidates is not so much about who one supports philosophically as it is about wanting to be on board with the eventual winner. Hillary's early support was based on the "invincibility" factor which is not now operative.

Most of the reports you read/hear about a candidate revolve around how much money they've RAISED . . . e.g., "So-and-so is unbeatable because he/she has raised $125 million."

What these numbers don't tell you is how much money a candidate actually has left at any given point. I've long suspected that Hillary Clinton was raising a ton of money over the last couple of years but then spending it almost as quickly as she raised it.

She has greater reserves than this guy thinks. We should not underestimate this woman until after Feb 5th. Her campaign is frantically looking for something to hit Obama with; the leaks should begin soon.

From Hot Air:

Anyway, with $100 million raised in funds and New York among the states in play on February 5, it’s not bloody likely. So take your pick. This story is a ploy planted by…

(a) …the Clinton campaign, to give Edwards false hope of her exiting early and thereby encourage him to stay in the race until Super Tuesday so that he can continue to draw votes from Obama.

(b) …the Clinton campaign, to boost turnout among her supporters in New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada by raising the stakes of defeat.

(c) …one of the other campaigns, to depress turnout in those states by suggesting that her
