Oh great... I have a colonscopy next Monday and after hearing your story, I am considering canceling.....

DON'T!

I don't know why every health care thread has to turn into the least common denominator/"can you top this" circus. There are bad outcomes in every situation. IOW, you have a better chance of being killed in a car accident on the way to or from the hopital than you do when you get there.

A colonoscopy is a very simple procedure, and it can do such good, don't let the horror stories scare you off. I had mine done last year, and I told the people at my office that if I could get another day off, I'd have it done again.

thanks ... for the words. I have done it once so I know what it is like, but this is No.2 (not to be a pun).

I did feel it when they did the last one. But you are right it is not so bad, I just wanted to wait 5-10 years instead of the 3 since last one.

Probably because his political views don’t jive with North Eastern Leftist Medical Culture.Once they “Schiavo” you, the hippocratic oath is easy to parse for leftists.

Your first sentence was okay, but it went downhill from there.

The issue is when you’re sick, in pain, scared, in a strange place being cared for by strangers....it can be terrifying for even the strongest. Illness, pain, fever, meds etc change you....your mind isn’t yours.

So it’s exacerbated by people who don’t care, don’t listen, not being kept clean, not being fed, not getting your meds on time etc.....it’s like a horror movie where you are helpless at the hands of monsters.

That’s why those who do best have a family member present at all times....someone loud, vocal, a major PITA and who makes sure that what needs to get done, gets done and they will do a lot themselves.

I agree with you about the colonoscopy. It is not fun but in my case it was not bad, and thankfully they found no problems in there. I would say the same thing to anyone afraid of an endoscopy. My dad died from cancer of the esophagus so that is an area of concern to me. It could save your life to have this procedure. I had it done 3 times and am OK in there too. But this was even easier than the colonoscopy. Except for the slight burning of the anesthetic in your throat at first you are not likely to feel anything. It is nothing to fear.

...Glenn, there is no modesty in a hospital...

Obviously he has never given birth, otherwise he would have realized this ;)

You are quite right.

I sat with my husband for over 4 months of hospitalization.

He called me sometimes in the middle of the night and I went to get him off the commode and back to bed.

I am no sissy. If I listed my injuries you would be astounded to know I am alive, but I survived through meditation and sleep...not any fine care for the first week!

The doctors would not even listen to my observations of something “not being right”. The second one said it isn’t possible to save the foot, but we will try. I thank him every day even if I can’t wear a shoe and pain is constant. I can walk!

Well it is over and I do not wish it on anyone else. I sure do understand though!

[You have no idea of the trauma.]

There are plenty of us who been under the care of a hospital and it’s NEVER a pleasant experience. mine was because of a MI. However, few had the forum to cry and whine all over the airwaves about it. In my opinion, he needs to grow a pair.

Well it has made my day to remember and cry a little for the lack of compassion in our health care.

It has definitely let me “put away” some of my buried anxiety.

I have sometimes wondered why I was allowed to live. I am searching for a reason, maybe I need to get to the hospital and volunteer. I bet they won’t take me in a wheelchair, but somebody might.

I have no desire for “a pair” in my panties either. LOL

You needed Stern to explain to you how to clean yourself?
I don’t think Stern is the best source for medical or any other type of advice.

“Some of the Freepers here can laugh at his situation and tell him to “Man Up” if you all want to, but when it’s your time to be treated in the same way and have the same lack of compassion given to you, remember to “Man Up.””

I’ve been there, done that. I had a similar operation as Glenn. One night during recovery at home I started bleeding heavily (about >200 mls/hr). After getting the run around over the phone for a couple of hours I drove myself to the hospital rather than bring my wife into a bad neigborhood at midnight. The ER was full of the usual drunks, fight injuries, druggies etc so I had to raise a fuss to get some attention. It took another couple of hours for them to decide I needed a surgeon fast(really, ya think?). The guy that did my surgery was out of town so they had to get the on-call guy (who was head of surgery and wasnt happy having to come in at 3AM). They fixed the leak and told me I had lost at least a third of my blood volume. I got a visit and apology from the original surgeon and went home the next day. That was the end of it. No drama, no crying, no BS.

I guess we all have to put it in proportion.

The spinal fractures healed without a problem and the head injuries and broken rib/collapsed lung damage seem to not cause me any loss of movement or thinking! Stitches for the many glass cuts were removed and healed well.

They must have done something right during the first 3 days in ICU, but I never came to consciousness there to know for sure. It seems the care stopped at the movement to a room upstairs. The person who stayed longest was the social worker sent to question me for Alzheimer's. What a joke!

The second hospital was not perfect but so much better I think of it as a nice rest, in a private room.

I wonder if we could do better if we all made our complaints louder and yes, Glenn has the forum to help.

“food delivered and since you could not feed yourself they removed it when you were sleeping... 40 pound weight loss in a month”

40 pounds in a month? You could make a million writing a book titled (The Hospital Diet). :-)
