Focus on the Family founder James Dobson said Friday that GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee's victory in the Iowa caucuses shows that Christian conservatives still have considerable influence.
Huckabee easily defeated second-place finisher Mitt Romney in Iowa Thursday thanks to a wave of support from evangelical Christians.
"The results of the Iowa caucuses reveal that conservative Christians remain a powerful force in American politics. That had to be a great shock to those on the far left," Dobson said in a written release.
Dobson criticized what he called media elites, saying they had written off religious conservatives.
Huckabee's victory "was evidence of an energized and highly motivated conservative community," Dobson said. "Not bad for a supposed bunch of demoralized, depressed, disillusioned and disengaged Reaganites."
Dobson said he has not endorsed Huckabee and said the former Arkansas governor may not win the GOP nomination.
In the next test, the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday, Christian conservatives are expected to be less of a force than they were in Iowa.
Who should they support: Romney, I sure hope not, he’s even worse, the really isn’t another Reaganite in the race other than Duncan Hunter, and possibly Fred or Ron Paul.
Then why did less than 50% of said Christian Right vote for the candidate he touted?
They can yell at me again, but I’ll say it again — Fred Thompson, get together with this guy and kiss and make up.
Dobson is BEGGING you here to pay attention, to recognize the power of the religious right and to embrace them.
That’s why he said he wasn’t endorsing Huckabee.
And if Romney hasn’t talked to him, well then Romney get your butt over there and do it (but I would guess he has already, and it wasn’t enough to get Dobson’s endorsement).
I get the feeling that Dobson knows enough to not want Huckabee, but is willing to let this go on to demonstrate the power of the evangelical vote.
Nobody should doubt that getting on the wrong side of the religious conservatives is very bad, say 21+ points bad for some candidates.
If Dobson wasn’t a conservative, he would have endorsed Huckabee.
A conservative in my book is for limited government and supports moral values. There are far too many “conservatives” who just want the government enforcing their worldview in terms of morality. That is the sort of thinking that brings about things like Prohibition.
But he isn’t “in his corner”, he specifically said he was NOT endorsing Huckabee.
Huckabee is the perfect RELIGIOUS candidate, so if Dobson isn’t endorsing him, it’s because of something OTHER than his christianity — and that would be his political positions.
Dobson is using Iowa to highlight the danger of ignoring the religious conservatives.
Absolutely right! And that’s where the Social Conservatives went off the reservation the last few years...
Just to help me understand from a historical perspective, someone with the values and policies of Teddy Roosevelt would not fit into the mold of “conservative” by the standards of most Freepers?
Thank you. Ok I understand the general explanation. Now let me ask you this, what does a conservative do when you see the other party promoting some kind of social values that he consider harmful?
Example: If don't curb the power of the homosexula-agenda, they will invade the Military and that organization we admire so much will be turned into something very ugly, that is of course if you are not a homosexual yourself, then would have a complete different point of view.
This is one of my great concerns... given that I deeply admire and respect our Military. One of the few things I admire from government... You know what I mean? Sould we just stand by and do nothing like we have done with the Boys-scouts?...
Did he say something incorrect, or are you just jumping on the anti-Christian bandwagon?
Where did Dobson say that he was in Huckabee’s corner?
Cut the anti-Christian crap, NavVet.
Yup. Christians, as a whole, are “as dumb as a box of rocks and as gullible those at a Michael Moore film festival.” Anyone who follows Christ has got to have mental problems.
... and you’re part of the anti-Christian right? Or are you part of the Left? Help me understand here.
THAT I absolutely concur with. Evangelicals should be supporting Thompson. Huckabee is wrong on too many issues.
Cut the anti-Christian crap, Badeye. Where has Dobson either “grandstanded” or displayed “megalomania”? You’ve just got issues with Christian leaders....
What are you talking about? Dobson has “touted” no candidate. He’s pointed out some failings of some of them, and pointed out strengths of other ones. He’s not stood behind any single candidate.
Your antipathy for Dobson is showing....
Excellent, well-balanced insights.
Unlike what most of these rabid FReepers are spewing.
I’m a fan of Dobson. I wish at some point he would endorse Hunter.
Thompsons January Dropout contract went up about 25 points last night after Iowa.

Fred Thompson to drop out of 2008 Presidential race on/before 31 Jan 2008 M 40.0 98.9 60.0 103 +24.8
Huckabee has surged because he won a couple of debates and hes got evangelical support. If a quick rise can happen to the liberal pro-life evangelical Huckster, it can happen to the conservative pro-life evangelical Hunter.
I do not know Duncan Hunters strategy. However, he may yet surprise us even before New Hampshire. Because he has campaigned in Wyoming, which has a race before New Hampshire, and no one else is campaigning there.

Then theres New Hampshire. Hunters already there while everyone else wraps up in Iowa. Its conceivable that he will have momentum.
Basically, its a wide open race, with the lead changing on a weekly basis. Might as well support the truest conservative, Hunter.

“If conservative Christians knew the meaning of the word conservative, Huckabee wouldnt have won Iowa.”
As a conservative Christian myself, I wonder if many of these so-called conservative Christians might consider themselves to be so because they have never put more than a dollar or two into the offering plate? (Sarc!)
