NBC Highlights 'Life-Long Republican' Caucusing for Obama, But...

On Wednesday's NBC Nightly News, Andrea Mitchell showcased “a lifelong Republican, who twice voted for George Bush, now canvassing for Obama” as a “precinct captain” in Iowa. In an interview two months ago, however, Monica Green listed Ronald Reagan as the last Republican President with whom she “identified” and, asked whether she'd vote for Reagan if he were running against Barack Obama today, she equivocated as she implied Reagan was too anti-communist: “You mean if he was running against Obama today? Oh my goodness. That's a good question...His views on communism were probably not the view I would appreciate today. I've got a much more global perspective today, and Obama touches that.”

Mitchell and NBC producers hardly stumbled upon Green by accident since the official Barack Obama campaign site features a video of Green as one of its “Republicans for Barack.” In the NBC story, Mitchell cued up Green to explain how she rationalizes to her kids her party change: “In the beginning, they would call me and say, 'Who are you? You raised us to be Republicans. I don't understand.' And I just keep saying, 'Look at the problems in the world, and look at who you think is going to be able to solve these problems?'”

The MRC's Brad Wilmouth corrected the closed-captioning against the video to provide this transcript of the relevant portion of Mitchell's story, from Des Moines, on the January 2 NBC Nightly News:

ANDREA MITCHELL: Barack Obama is counting on independents, according to NBC's Lee Cowan.

LEE COWAN: The Obama campaign says they are energized not only by the size of the crowds, but also their enthusiasm. And they point out that if there are so many people who say that they're first-time caucus goers that are turning out at midnight rallies and early in the morning in this bitter cold, that's a pretty good indication of their commitment.

MITCHELL: All the candidates are relying on ground troops, precinct captains like Monica Green, a lifelong Republican, who twice voted for George Bush, now canvassing for Obama.

WOMAN, RESPONDING TO OBAMA CAPTAIN MONICA GREEN: We haven't fully decided. I think my husband will probably be John Edwards, and I am split, either Edwards or Obama.

MITCHELL, TO GREEN: What do your kids say to you?

MONICA GREEN, IOWA PRECINCT CAPTAIN: In the beginning, they would call me and say, "Who are you? You raised us to be Republicans. I don't understand." And I just keep saying, "Look at the problems in the world, and look at who you think is going to be able to solve these problems?"

From an interview in early November with Campaigns & Elections magazine:

C&E: Who were some Republicans with whom you have identified?

Green: "I thought Reagan was a strong president...I was totally in support of Reagan. He's probably the last one."

C&E: If the 1980 Reagan were running today, would you vote for him?

Green: "You mean if he was running against Obama today? Oh my goodness. That's a good question...His views on Communism were probably not the view I would appreciate today. I've got a much more global perspective today, and Obama touches that."

The link to the Campaign & Elections posting no longer works, but it's posted on the “Seattle for Barack Obama” blog. It's also highlighted on the “Think on These Things Research” blog, which touts: “Commentary, and News on the 2008 Presidential Election with a Pro-Obama Slant.”

The quickest way to get the liberal media to pay attention to you is to claim to be a Republican who hates Republicans. It’s an almost infallible public relations strategy that of late has worked well for “Republican” Monica Green.

It’s also done wonders for “lifelong Republican” Henry A. Lowenstein, who has managed to get 20 different letters published in the New York Times since 2003, a remarkable feat when you consider that the Times (by its own admission) receives around 1,000 letters a day and prints only 15 on its letters page. That means the odds of the average liberal person (the paper freely admits it favors left-wing letter writers) getting his or her letter printed are about 1.5 percent.

Hard to believe but then again you have folks right here on FR supporting Flip Romney, John McCain, Mike Huckabee and Rudy Guiliani. Its a matter of dumb and dumber.

I recall about 3 months ago somone posted an article about another ‘Republican for Obama’ and it took about five minutes to find out he never was a Republican (donated to Gore and Clinton, member of GLAAD and some anti war groups)

Maybe she’s under deep cover and working hard to undermine the Clintons. Maybe.

His views on communism were probably not the view I would appreciate today

What a friggin maroon. The point that she's making is that she likes Communism more NOW than she did when President Reagan and his anti-Communism strategies were winning the Cold War.

Ok, pro-Communists back in the 80s were idiots ... but at least they could point to a system that had managed to envelope half of Europe, most of Asia and a good chunk of the third world. You can't use that sort of argument today - the only "real" countries out there still drinking the Red KoolAid are Cuba and North Korea. This vapid oxygen thief is saying she's sympathetic to a system that has not only been ideologically discredited, but shown - in reality, by real-world examples - to be an utter and complete failure.

How come the MSM NEVER mentions — or interviews — lifelong Democrats who’ve switched parties...?

In all my years, I have NEVER, EVER seen the MSM do this with a Democrat. The MSM always tries to aid the Democrat by always finding (and always by sheer happenstance) a "life-long Republican" and holding up as now a staunch supporter of Democrat candidate X.

Now, why do you suppose that is?

I have lost count of how many letters to the editors I have written, always noting my switching of parties after 9/11 and reasons behind it — my disenfranchisement with the direction and twisted logic of the liberals of today — and only once did I come close enough to getting something of mine published when someone from a liberal paper called me back for identity verification so my letter could be published. Still that letter never got published anyway. Reckon, higher ups got wind of it!

If Reagan was the last Republican that she supported (probably the only one), did she vote for Clinton?
