Thompson: Poor finish in Iowa won't end campaign (not dropping out - rumor from rival campaign)

GOP presidential hopeful Fred Thompson said in an in-studio interview with KCCI-TV in Des Moines that there is no truth to rumors that his campaign will fold before New Hampshire if he doesn't have a strong showing in Iowa.

"That is absolutely made up out of whole cloth," said the former U.S. Senator from Tennessee.

Thompson said a rival campaign was likely the source of that rumor.

"Can you imagine such a thing in politics?" he asked.

Thompson said his campaign is seeing a "surge" in interest right now, and said he has visited 50 communities in the Hawkeye State in the last couple weeks.

"I'm not going to play into any scenario that's not totally optimistic," he said.

Thompson touched on his plan for strengthening border security to prevent terrorist attacks, and his plan to simplify the tax code.

"Our tax code is a mess right now," he said.

Cold meaning the WEATHER! Fred’s chances of a strong finish look good!

If it is from another campaign, I would expect it from his old friend McCain. He gains the most if Fred drops and he gets third.

McPain doesn’t have the funds for the anti-Fred phone campaign that’s been undertaken against Fred .

Only two campaigns have that kind of money , Rudy and Romney . McPain and Huckster have very limited resources and can’t afford the backfire of something like this .

Rudy isn’t touching Iowa, so that leaves Romney ....
The RSM is in full force ....may they lose bigtime !

Go Fred !

[UPDATED:] Making the rounds this morning, several people are fingering McCain guys for initiating this article. I know at least two campaigns are also seeing a late breaking surge for Fred. McCain’s invested in the “I’ll be a surprise third” story line, so it makes some sense that McCainiacs would push this.

— from Redstate.com. Others are coming up with the same idea, that the rumor was a cheap way to try to take out Fred and boost their own chances.

I’d be surprised if Fred drops-out. However, one important missing aspect that has been glaringly obvious in Fred’s campaign has been, in my opinion, NO PR. Fred’s message has had trouble connecting to the people.....

Forget your trivia?

In November 1979, Ronald Reagan publicly announced his candidacy for President in the 1980 election. By this time in 1980, he was running behind in Iowa and lacking funds and lost the Iowa caucus to George Bush on Jan 21st. All the pundits at that time said he was too lazy and too old and out of touch.

Sound familiar so far?

As we know, Reagan ended up winning that election, ousting a sitting president. Four years later, running for re-election, he carried 49 states and won the biggest electoral-vote landslide in the nation's history.

Don't count Fred out just yet.

It’s no use trying to reason with these Fred haters. They don’t want to listen.

Lol, maybe that’s why my little Yorkie gave a howl yesterday - which he’s done less than 10 times in his 4 years!!

I am glad to hear that Fred wouldn’t do that. I just hope none of the other campaigns had anything to do with it. It would be really sad, I hate it when people play those games.

I only responded with my list of possibilites because I noticed that people were already telling lies and saying that Mitt’s campaign did it without knowing anything yet. If that’s gets me called names by a Fred supporter, then so be it, it’s just more double standards.

You can count me in on that. I’ve never given money to any candidate, before, but I started with Fred. Not much, but I gave $25 last month and $25 earlier this month. Soon as I get paid back for a loan I floated to a family member, I’ll be throwing some more money Fred’s way.

That’s great. I know Fred appreciates all the grass roots internet support he is getting.

The Huckster has the religious right votes locked up.

Correction - he has the votes of SOME members of the religious right locked up.

Help me out here if you will.

I am looking for a real definition of the "religious right".

I am a "born again Christian" if there ever was one. I am also a lifetime Constitutional Conservative. I can quote a fair amount of scripture, but don't use it as an axe handle over my fellows. And yet I don't feel I fit into what I see the "religious right" as defined by the media.

So exactly what who is the "religious right"? Do they really have to be frothing at the mouth zealots? If that is the case, are there really that many of them?

Serious questions here.

Gads, Brit Hume just came on and Hillary is just one point behind Obama and Edwards several points behind her!

Don’t know just what makes Piper howl, he just gives one howl and has done it so seldom! Cute to see him make a little O out of his mouth.
