GOP presidential hopeful Fred Thompson said in an in-studio interview with KCCI-TV in Des Moines that there is no truth to rumors that his campaign will fold before New Hampshire if he doesn't have a strong showing in Iowa.
"That is absolutely made up out of whole cloth," said the former U.S. Senator from Tennessee.
Thompson said a rival campaign was likely the source of that rumor.
"Can you imagine such a thing in politics?" he asked.
Thompson said his campaign is seeing a "surge" in interest right now, and said he has visited 50 communities in the Hawkeye State in the last couple weeks.
"I'm not going to play into any scenario that's not totally optimistic," he said.
Thompson touched on his plan for strengthening border security to prevent terrorist attacks, and his plan to simplify the tax code.
"Our tax code is a mess right now," he said.

For your edification.
Someone did post a screen shot of that short lived thread. It referenced hearing the news on a CBS radio spot. I think I saw it on one of the longer Fred threads. Perhaps it was one about Fred’s poll surge.
I thought it was interesting that one person posted a prediction this morning that Fred would drop out and endorse McCain within 48 hours. Since the rumor did not break at Politico until this evening, Im wondering if this might have been obtained from someplace else.

Sorry. I linked to the reply and not the post.

Thanks for the link. I did see that this morning but mentally linked it to this instead:
'Thompson: "I Need to Come in Second"'
I thought of the "48 hours" mention simply as giving a "deadline" of the day after the caucuses, and I thought of the McCain mention as an added layer of not-too-outlandish speculation.

Thanks for the link.
That thread about the Politico thing started at 9:23 pm PST, some time after I did my search. It reminds me of some details in the CBS radio thing: he was supposed to drop out if he didn't get at least second place, and he was supposed to endorse McCain.
It also reminds me of how the CBS radio thing attributed this idea to "sources" of some sort (I forget what). Don't you just love sources?
dirty trick
Mormon or “Evangelical” or Queeg or Crossdresser?
Very nice. Fred looks like he’s living the good life. Good for him.
With people like you falling all over themselves to believe any old line of malarkey presently up for sale, who cares? The damage gets done and can’t really be undone. Or do you propose a do-over day?
This is Mitt’s work. He’s trying desparately to avoid a third place finish.
I’m pretty sure Romney is looking at a third place finish in Iowa and panicked.
This WILL be traced back to the Romney camp, but before the caucuses? Probably not. Politcs can be brutal and dishonest, especially when practiced by someone both desparate and ruthless. Cue Ed Rollins.
I saw this (Fred withdraws if loses IA) late yesterday posted here as someone “hearing” it on cBS radio. The thread got pulled immediately, as it should. cBS as a source is just stupid.
This was posted on the MyManMitt site at 12:40 this morning, by the starter of this rumor. Jason is a jerk. Tells me a lot about the Mitt supporters.
My Run In With Fred!

Driving back to the hotel from the Romney Ralley I took a wrong turn to the freeway. As I was driving up the street I thought would lead to the freeway I saw a huge motor home. Turns out it was Fred’s ride. It was sitting outside a news studio, so I went up and asked the driver where Fred was and he said inside. So I found some guy outside the building who was a reporter stated talking to him and he let me in the building.
So I stood there for a moment and wouldn’t you know it, out walks Fred with his entourage.
So I asked for an interview and was sent to his press secretary. He said it had been a long night so I could do an email interview. I asked him for a card, and he didn’t have one.
So I followed them back to the bus and took some video in the 10 degree weather. When we got to the bus door I asked the press secretary, “What are your feelings about tomorrow?”
His answer?
“Cold”
Then he got back on the bus.
Draw your own ironic conclusions.
Gee, too bad Tossup is not around anymore :)
“Tells me a lot about the Mitt supporters.”
Yep, they are slick just like their daddy, Slick Mitt.
Romney & Huckabee are better than this??????
All you got to do is follow the posts here on FR from those who are spreading the lies and rumors and you will see who’s candidate is doing this.
They certainly were tripping all over each other to post it here.
My guess it was from a top tier candidate but not Huckabee.
