DES MOINES, Iowa Several Republican officials close to Fred Thompsons presidential campaign said they expect the candidate will drop out of the race within days if he finishes poorly in Thursdays Iowa caucus.

Hi Jonathan,I'm a source very, very, very, very close to the Huckabee campaign and I swear on a stack of Guttenberg Bibles that if Huckabee doesn't win by 5 percentage points in the Iowa caucus, he's going to move to Albania and start a sheep farm.
Honest and for true.
Good reporting job on the Fred story!!! We thank you!
Me
I KNOW he would not endorse Romney. Thompson doesn’t like fli-flopping on issues. He’s a straight shooter.
You’ve got a year to go. Keep your record alive.
I hate to tell you, but Romney will not win in either Iowa or New Hampshire and he will not get the nomination!
Funny!
Hey! Great point!!! Now where have I heard that before? Oh, right. On the previous forty-five thread about Fred Thompson where you pretend to support him whilst slipping the proverbial shiv in between the ribs. Your schtick is wearing quite, quite thin.
From your keyboard to God’s LCD.
Actually, that’s a different rumor, and has NO suggestion that they heard anything from the campaign — it’s just someone’s assessment of the information they have heard.
I’m sure it’s wrong, but it’s not the same as a news outlet saying the talked to people “close to Fred’s campaign”.
My guess is someone near to Fred’s campaign actually DID say this, and that they are wrong.
I don’t think Fred will drop out before New Hampshire. The only wild card is if Fred really thinks his endorsement would help his old friend McCain win the election, and my guess is with McCain looking good in NH now Fred would wait and use his endorsement to give McCain an extra boost right before the South Carolina primary.
That presupposes Fred would drop out, which I’m not predicting, and that he would throw his support to McCain, which is just a guess on my part.
Of course, if Fred drops out, I’ll have to eat these words, but I’m pretty confident about it.
It’s been an AMAZING ride I tell ya...
I just wonder WHAT the place will be like a week after NH when there aren’t any more “FRED IS SOOOO ____________” threads around.
Interestingly, McCain has shot up this evening at Intrade, and now is the front-runner.
OK, but be sure to call me when that happens. I always wondered what would happen if hell freezes over.
I hope so. Romney is bad news.
I hope you won’t eat your hat if Romney wins Iowa & NH.
Don’t believe everything you read in the funny papers...
I agree that I don’t think Fred will endorse Governor Romney, more likely he would endorse McCain, though I don’t understand what would compel him to do that. By the way, Mitt is a conservative.
One of the rules of politics is that you have to want to win very, very badly. He was late in announcing and leisurely on the campaign trail. The only thing he had going for him was the folksy style and the vague hope among some that he actually caught that stuffed fish that adorned the set of Law & Order.
If he does, I will lose some respect for him. I don't trust Romney with my guns and I'll vote third party if he's the nominee. NO MORE RINOs!!!
That is so nasty to talk about a patriotic candidate like that. It’s appaling. I think Fred made a mistake when he made a big deal out of not being a regular church goer. I think that was the biggest mistake he made as far as I am concerned. It seems to have only attracted mean-spirted supporters.
While I feel your pain and you make some good points, you have not seen “fed up” until a FULL-BLOODED DEMOCRAT gets elected. That nightmare, may very well become reality.
I will not stay home, I will not join in a futile attempt at a 3rd party pipedream that our country will not rally behind. Can you imagine 8 more years of the Clinton cancer......not me and not without a fight.
I will likely vote for Romney.
