Why the Left Hates Democracy ... (The Enemy at Home)
Townhall ^ | Wednesday, January 2, 2008 | Dinesh D'Souza

Posted on 01/02/2008 10:17:12 AM PST by IrishMike

Commenting on Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, I recently commented that there are three groups that oppose democracy in the Muslim world: the secular dictators like Musharaff, the Islamic radicals of the Bin Laden stripe, and the cultural left here in America. In response, several people expressed indignation. One challenged me to provide a single example of a leftist who opposed Muslim democracy. Other liberals noted that they favored the idea of democracy but alas it wasn't succeeding in Iraq. Certainly it does seem odd that a left which is always calling for "more democracy" in America would resist democracy in Muslim countries.

Yet it's true, and my book The Enemy at Home provides chapter and verse. For instance, the leftist author Robert Fisk resolutely opposed America's attempt to introduce democracy in Afghanistan. Incredibly Fisk said that the Taliban government should be kept in power because it had nothing to do with 9/11. Leftist Howard Zinn also equated America's displacement of the Taliban and holding of free elections with the 9/11 attacks themselves, as though both were equivalent crimes. Leftist legal scholar Richard Falk called for a "negotiated settlement" with the Taliban in order to protect the country's "sovereign rights."

Leading leftists such as Edward Said, Toni Morison, Jesse Jackson, Barbara Ehrenreich, Jane Fonda and Jim McDermott took out full-page ads condemning the U.S. intervention in Afghanistan. Leftist groups organized more than a hundred demonstrations against America’s efforts there. If these people had their way, the U.S. would not have overthrown the Taliban government and Afghanistan would not have had free elections.

Immediately following the U.S. invasion of Iraq, leftist philanthropist George Soros warned that "I would consider Iraq the last place to choose for a demonstration project" in democracy.

When Iraq had its first free election, columnist Bob Herbert said it meant nothing because “a real democracy requires an informed electorate” while the Iraqi people were “woefully uninformed,” apparently because they didn’t make the choices that Herbert wanted.

The Left isn’t a fan of Judeo-Christian faiths.

They are into multiculturalism as long as it is foreign to the traditions of Western civilization. Anything else is the work and world of dead white European males and part of the establishment they’ve long sought to cast out.

It is a culture war. Subversion. They are not tolerant of all faiths, skin colors, or political beliefs. They dream of creating a new socialist utopia and believe that they will be the ones in charge after their revolution comes.

Everytime the Democrats lose an election they come forward to editorialize that the Republicans only won because there is an “uninformed electorate” who votes against their own economic self-interest (voting for candidates who support tax cuts rather than govt. handouts) and because of religious superstition and bigotry (voting against candidates who support homosexuality and abortion).

A poster on another thread made the remark that Radical Secularism is a treat to democracy. That is a a beauty. It is. Look at how Secular Humanism goes up against the 1st Amendment.

well said...I’ll add:

they see all religions the exact same. I see a “coexist” bumper sticker all the time. Each letter is represented by a religious symbol. The c is a crescent, the t is a cross the o is the star of David, etc.

They also see all military as exactly the same. US troops are nazis. They call them that all the time in fact. ANY military from ANY country, like all religions are one and the same. ALL are bloodthirsty war criminals.

They’ve hijacked the hypocrat party, therefore democrats get a free pass (all politicians aren’t therefore alike) and you can see that when conservative people like Zell Miller and Joe Lieberman literally get run out of town!

I need a bumper-snicker made up...”vote hypocrat: the insane people’s party” And another one to place next to it. “The Insane are people too”!

Maybe “Are you questioning my insanity” to add next to that...

So why does the left hate democracy in the Muslim world? The reason is simple. Muslims are socially conservative and generally want a greater role for Islam in their private and public lives. Consequently Muslim democracies are likely to be more conservative socially than they are when secular despots rule them. The left fears Muslim democracy because it is terrified of Muslim values, especially sharia or Muslim holy law. Feminists and gays are not likely to fare very well under Muslim holy law.

I don’t disagree with D'Souza as it regards the relatively “big thinkers” of the left, but there’s only about three of those.

Most liberals simply hate democracy because they equate democracy with global US dominance. They recognize that freedom is an American export, and they don’t want others to buy any American concepts.

They would never give up their own democratic rights, of course, but they have no imperative to share it with the various little brownish people of the world. Those non-ivyleague educated people will do better under the wise forced liberal tutelage in the inevitable global marxist state.

In addition, every liberal agrees that bad news for America is good news for their cause.

It’s actually fairly simple...

The left does not believe in self-government. They believe we are all stupid hayseeds and not NEARLY as refined, insightful, educated or as good as they are. They truly believe that THEY are totally entitled to be in charge because they are so much better than the rest of us.

Yup. Rulership by the elite and the rest of us bowing to their greater knowledge of what is “right”.

I can guarantee this- IF we ever allow them to gain what they are after, we will NEVER hear about global warming or the “chillll-DRUN” again. And those who imagine that, as loyal demonRATs, they will have it better than the rest of us? Think again...(or maybe for the first time).

Over the years the Left has made progress towards their totalitarian agenda, but yet to have success in toppling our system as planned.

The Clinton’s were the start of their “surge”, but as often happens with the Left, they themselves blew their own plans out the window. They cannot get it through their heads this is a Republic in which the people (self rule) are in charge no matter how inept the Left regards the people. Actually the inept are the Left.

It’s tiring to have those people around. It isn’t entertaining anymore.

Huckabee offered “our apologies” for the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto?

Huckabee’s comments are not consistent a person who understands the nature of the world we live in.  America is not apologizing for anything.  We are at war with Islamic terrorists, does he understand this?

Label me ...Dumbo

Foreign policy......he doesn't have a clue!
Apologize for what?  Apologize for who?
He has no right to apologize for the U.S. or me.

And Hillary said Benazir Bhutto got assassinated so Musharif could run unopposed ??????????
Musharif was elected last October, these January (now February) elections are for parliamentary positions.

Even Joe Bidden said Hillary, though full of good intentions, did not understand Pakistan.

Obama ??? That a$$hat wanted to invade Pakistan.
