Thompson's Retail Politics
Human Events ^ | 01/02/2008 | Martha Zoller

“Normally, lack of money is a problem but in the Iowa caucus, lack of money has forced Thompson to do retail politics, which is what he’s best at. He’s getting a surge from it. In this case, lack of money may make the difference.” -- Steve Gill, author of “The Fred Factor”

I know what you are thinking. That gal is in the bag for Thompson and she’s scratching for anything she can find. Not so, I am a typical conservative, I don’t know who I am voting for in the primary. I know who I am not voting for, but I’ll keep that to myself -- for now.

Fred Thompson is traipsing around Iowa, literally. He’s basically out of money and he’s going town to town, house to house, diner to diner meeting the folks. Unlike, Hillary Clinton, the more you see and talk to Fred Thompson, the more you like him.

He walked into the room at the Des Moines Marriot where FAIR (Federation for American Immigration Reform) was hosting their Congressional Task Force Radio Row. He met and talked with anyone in the room until he sat down for an extended interview with Jan Michelson of WHO-AM of Des Moines. He couldn’t spend time with radio shows from Georgia or Kansas because if he doesn’t make it out of Iowa and New Hampshire, he won’t make it to these other states where his has a good chance of winning more than a few of them. He wowed the room and then headed out to the next stop.

During the course of the day, I saw him all over Iowa in the same boots and leather jacket that he was wearing at the radio row. This was Fred Thompson’s day. (snip)

I think the problem in Iowa is the lack of conservatives with a computer.

There has been a recent surge, but it wasn’t Fred. It is McCain.

I should certainly hope so. I will never vote for him. How he even comes in above one persent amazes me.

Something I wrote yesterday

Well, they have lots of computers in Iowa too. They just don’t learn much about candidates and politics reading weather and farm reports.

“Your absolute flame worthy reply did some good. It prompted me to send Fred another $100.00.
Any others care to match to spite this anti-Fred troll?”

Good challenge.

I’ll go another $100.

Any other takers?

I tell you, using Google News is just about as bad as watching MSNBC. Scanning the headlines will give the impression Fred is pulling out of the race.

Perhaps Iowa just has too many lazy voters!

That is the most inexplicable thing I’ve ever seen. How many times does McCain have to trash his base for people to take notice.”

Totally agreed. It is most amazing. I think it is attributable, in part, to the fact that while McCain was out of the picture, all of the fire was focused on others. So he has been out there for five months or so without no one paying him much attention. Now, as the warts are revealed on everyone else, all of a sudden, McCain looks attractive to many voters.

But, that is surely only a partial explanation. Like you said, this is truly inexplicable.

The MSM is shutting out Fred because he is not spending BIG MONEY with ads and pads for their pockets.

The MSM supports whoever lines their pockets. Just watch who’s faces show up most frequently in the news broadcast and papers. It’s the spenders.

Spot on! When dealing with unprincipled whores, follow the money.

Additionally, but to a lesser extent, there's an element within the IA and NH political class that insists on their "first in line" primary positions in order to slurp up the ridiculous amounts of candidate spending and the generous promises they make to buy their victories.

Go Hunter, Go Fred.

I’ll see your $100 and raise you to $150. Thanks RachelFaith for spurring another Fred Thompson fund-drive on FR!!

From Fred08.com:

Thank you for your generous contribution. We’re in this race to win and your support is helping us bring to our fellow Americans the message of change and a call to return to the principles of our founding heritage. It’s critical that we address our nation’s challenges through the core ideals of self-governance, free markets, and the rule of law.

I believe there is a real sense across our country that we’re tired of the same old petty politics. Our fellow Americans want to see some real change. They want it in Washington, and they want it closer to home. They want a better future for themselves and for their families.

We can do it.

Thank you again for your encouragement and support.

Okay, I’ll go, too.

If Fred finishes a strong third in Iowa, I think the money will roll in to his campaign.

No... He occupies YOUR time and soooo many others, that there isn’t anything ELSE I to which I can reply.

I’m just wondering WHAT the topic will be when reality hits ya’ll.

Just saying..

So, who do you support, and why? Can’t you make your case for a common sense conservative victory in ‘08? Where’s the reality?

Sooo many other Freepers...must be a bunch of idiots, huh?

Reality? I make my own reality. If Fred doesn’t get the nomination, I’ll move on to the next best choice. I don’t spend my time bashing the other candidates.

My choices: Hunter. Now Thompson. If I have to, Romney. If need be, Rudy. I’m not going straight to the worst choices.

I know.... I “good” showing can go a long way....

But is 4th? Good?

Is 10% good?

Is 5th place good?

If he is behind McCain... why should he stay in and prevent McCain from beating Romney in NH?

That is why I think he’s done.

He gets 4th or 5th behind McCain or Paul and he’s just taking votes from McCain at that point.

He gets 3rd... he gets a ticket to NH.

He has NO CHANCE of 3rd.

Huckabee has better odds of getting 3rd...

I agree.

If Fred comes in third... HE will be THE story of the night...

So would Ron Paul....

Or Duncan Hunter...

Or Alan Keyes... who was 3rd last go around...

But....

Fred WON’T BE 3rd....

That’s all I am sayin...

I really don’t know how you can say that Fred has NO CHANCE of 3rd place in Iowa. It really all depends on how many folks go to the caucus for each candidate. I believe that Fred is most likely to come in second, but just may come in third. It all remains to be seen and we all will know tomorrow evening. Good luck to your candidate, and good luck to mine, Fred Thompson - The real conservative! :)
