EAST COUNTY - Activist Quannell X and dozens of supporters converged Sunday on a Porter neighborhood where on Nov. 29 Gary Southworth, a white property owner, shot and killed Rodney Shamlin, a black man.

They arrived in Porter around 3 p.m. in SUVs, on motorcycles and on horseback, gathering at a nearby school before following Quannell X down West Hammond Drive to the property where Southworth shot Shamlin in the chest. Quannell walked with Rodney Shamlin's father, Lenard, and widow, Trina, to the property, where the crime scene tape was still strung. "Brother Rodney Earl Shamlin was not some cat burglar," Quannell X said. "Brother Rodney Shamlin came to inquire of the property owner about buying one of these junk cars." He continued saying that Southworth shot Shamlin, then called police. "If the roles were reversed and Rodney Shamlin shot someone under the same circumstance, that brother would be in jail," he said. Moments earlier, Alberta Southworth, Gary Southworth's wife, walked out onto the porch of the mobile home on the property, but quickly retreated. Quannell X said the group gathered because "justice was not done" and that Sunday's protest was "only the beginning."
He called on the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office to take action. Gary Southworth has not been charged or indicted in Rodney Shamlin's death. Lenard Shamlin said it was hard losing his son.
"On Nov. 29, I lost a piece of my heart," he said. "I'm trying to understand how someone is gunned down in cold blood and nothing is done about it."
Widow Trina Shamlin also spoke about seeing justice done. "I want people to know he was somebody, and he wasn't somebody to hurt no one," she said. "He was taken away not just from me, but from my sons, too."
Quannell X called the new "Castle Doctrine" a "license to kill" and said far more black men had been killed in that situation than white men.
"This is not a Joe Horn situation - he was not breaking into someone's home, he was not even breaking into a car," Quannell said. "It was not 2 a.m. in the morning, not 3 a.m. in the morning, it was not pitch black." "If the roles were reversed and you had black homeowners killing white men like that, I guarantee they'd send a clear message- law enforcement, that is."
Pasadena homeowner Joe Horn allegedly shot and killed two men burglarizing his neighbor's home Nov. 14, sparking a debate across Texas about the state's "Castle doctrine" law, which gives a property owner more leeway in self-defense.
Neighbor Lois Allen, a white woman who is a retired prison chaplain, held hands with Quannell X and Trina Shamlin as she said the closing prayer.
Allen earlier criticized the "Castle Doctrine" and her neighbor's actions.
"We don't want a new law like that," Allen said. Neighbor Charles Pillow openly questioned whether Southworth told the truth about not knowing Shamlin. "In my opinion, it was an execution," Pillow said. Pillow said he is moving because he no longer wants his children to live on that street.
Afterward, Alberta Southworth reluctantly emerged from her home and said Rodney Shamlin was shot because he attacked her husband, who's had multiple heart attacks, and who caught Rodney Shamlin entering the back of their property with a saw in his hand.
The property is surrounded by woods, except for the clearing and driveway at the front.
She said she and her husband called police three days in a row prior to the shooting because complete vehicles were stolen from the property while they were not at home.
"The man (Rodney Shamlin) had stolen 10 cars," Southworth said. "Every day, someone was stealing, coming in from the back."
Southworth said Rodney Shamlin never said anything about a purchase, but simply lunged at her husband, who then shot him to save himself.
Southworth said her husband had a heart attack that day and had breathing problems on Sunday when Quannell X and the others were in front of their property.
"The man's going to kill my husband one way or another, I guess," she said.

We don’t know the facts, but have seen plenty of times how they have been twisted...
OTOH - the shooter could very well have been in the wrong...
Anybody know the facts of this case?
I also would like to read the original story but I have to admit I already have a couple of preconceived notions, first based on the fact that it seems from what little info is here that the dead man was ON ANOTHER PERSON’S PROPERTY, and second, WTF is a Quannel X???
Why do you suppose that is? Could be racism. Or could be that the statistics reflect the reality: that black men prey on white men (and other black men, for that matter) far more often than vice versa.
It's the upgrade to Quannel 9.0
No offence, but I suggest to Mr. "X" that he consult with the aggregated FBI crime statistics to see why this might be.
Maybe Quannell the Tenth should pass it along to his “community” that it is no longer safe to trespass on other peoples’ property while carrying a saw and trying to steal cars?
I almost don't NEED to read anymore. I'm almost ready to pat the shooter in this case on the back, just on general principles. Almost. I will read what's posted.
“WTF is a Quannel X”
A race baiting hustler.
lol!
Freepers always got a line.
I got the Quannel x.13 upgrade. They only release it to us rascist muthas. It’s bangin ...
lol, soda-through-the-nose moment
If some dude named Quanell X is showing up to protest, what else do we need to know????? The shooter probably deserves a medal.
Southworth was frustrated with all of the theft on his property. He says he didn't fire his gun because he thought Shamilin was stealing from him, but because he says he feared for his life.Sounds open and shut to me. Somebody should tell Quanell X to take his protest and shove it."And when the guy came at me, I had no choice, I thought he was going to Taser me with that thing he had," he told me.
I automatically think as in Malcolm X not sure but I think he has ties to the new (psuedeo) Black Panthers and maybe Nation of Islam.
Depends on who you ask
1. Freedom fighter
2. Black Panther leader
3. Black Racist
4. Future prisoner
I realize 2. and 3. are one and the same
