Patmor had the encounter with a large brown bear ...there are other ways his life has changed after the event. He now brings more than just his dog with him while walking to the post office.
"I carry my .44 whenever I go anywhere now," ...
Patmor said carrying the pistol is a result of not just the bear bite, but also ...
"I figured if I'm going to keep being attacked by animals, I've got to do something to protect myself,"
"In 20 years, I've hardly ever seen bears around my house, but I saw five browns and blacks this past summer. So, I wrote the governor and asked her to change the hunting regulations for brown bears, and make them more like the regs for black bears," ...
Patmor said the governor wrote back ...
other than packing heat, Patmor ... will attempt to be much more perceptive about his surroundings.
"I'll look out the windows of my home before going out and will look for bears more when outdoors.
I'm not afraid of bears now, I'm just more aware of them,"

“Yeah, Im talking about moose attacks. Cows with calves are about as hard to get along with as bears. “
Makes sense. There are a lot more cows with calves than there are bears.
Yeah.
LAst year the story was a guy that blased a blackie in the stairwell with a 40 GLock.
Turns out to be a bud of one of my sons. What a mess to clean up.
But, I guess it proves you *can kill* a black bear with a 40 cal pistol round. I’ll stick with my 45ACP.
I guess that you fight with what you have handy...
But a shot gun would be nice.
Exactly correct. Around the RV parking I only carry the 45, if we wander afield, the 12 ga is along. WIth a bag load of extra sheels.
We nearly got run over by a large blackie a couple of years ago at Eagle River when hiking. I don’t know what the bear was running from, we didn’t stick around to find out....
Something bigger ?
.
Robin Williams circa. 1986
When I was up camping in AK, we ran across a local who, upon seeing my bear spray, told me that I’d be better off with a .375 H&H.
I’m amazed that Treadwell lasted as long as he did. I watched the documentary about him. The man was nuts.
LOL
That was my asuption. A *big* brownie was working the area at that time. Posted photos showd footprints over 10 in across. Reports of a Brown in the AO described an adult moose being carried/dragged by a Brown....
Must have moved on, maybe the noise form the air base got to it & it went back up into the Valley.
I don;t want this guy anywhere around me in the woods.
He is bad medicine. Carrying the .44 is a good idea for anybody, but I think he needs to see a voodoo doctor to wipe out the hoodoo curse he is under.
I’ll take my chances with the four footed critters - they are more predictable.
And here I was thinking I knew something about bear anatomy.
OLO
HE empties a full magazine ntot he bear - who was climbing up the stairwell to the bedrooms upstairs. HE fired 14 times, hit 6 or 7 times IIRC.
Bear went back to the kitchen, tore it all up in his death thros and then left a pile of steaming scat in the middle of the floor - with blood everywhere.
The ServPro guys had had a shock when they showed up. Lokked like a bloodbath in the room.
They did a good job of cleaning tho.
Such is life in Anchorage....
