Patmor had the encounter with a large brown bear ...there are other ways his life has changed after the event. He now brings more than just his dog with him while walking to the post office.

"I carry my .44 whenever I go anywhere now," ...

Patmor said carrying the pistol is a result of not just the bear bite, but also ...

"I figured if I'm going to keep being attacked by animals, I've got to do something to protect myself,"

"In 20 years, I've hardly ever seen bears around my house, but I saw five browns and blacks this past summer. So, I wrote the governor and asked her to change the hunting regulations for brown bears, and make them more like the regs for black bears," ...

Patmor said the governor wrote back ...

other than packing heat, Patmor ... will attempt to be much more perceptive about his surroundings.

"I'll look out the windows of my home before going out and will look for bears more when outdoors.

I'm not afraid of bears now, I'm just more aware of them,"

This fellow lives in Clam Gulch - Alaska. South of Soldotna, North of Homer. It is an area not noted for an abundance of bears. Esp in the winter. I *do* keep a 12 ga shotgun at hand when RVing in that AO tho. You can never tell.

We will be going to pan for gold at Hope this year, so it shuld be intersting to see what is wandering around there this summer.

Remember this ?

The first time a black bear got into Ralf and Simona Brunner’s cabin off Skyline Drive last month, it got into food, ripped off a door and chewed on everything from candles to pepper spray. When it returned a second time, it opened a window, caused more of a mess and tore off a few pieces of siding.

The third time it came back in early October, the bear tore off seven rows of siding and tore into the insulation.

“I could forgive him the first two times, but ...

“Magnificent predators they are! I have a buddy who knows 2 people, both armed, who were mauled by brown (grizzly) bears. Their handguns were holstered, and neither could draw in time to get off a shot before the attack. The bears silently snuck up on them, then rushed them, from the side, and from behind.”

Very interesting. What happened next? Did they draw their pistols and neutralize the bears. Did they end up in the hospital?

I’d love to know when and where these attacks happened.

I had a friend that I have lost track of, he was doing a mineral survey for a mining company in Alaska in the late 60’s, I believe. A grizzly had been trailing him and his partner and pack dog for a long day. They built a camp fire, and he looked up to see the bear charging. He had time for a snap shot from the .30-06 that he was carrying as bear protection. The shot caught the bear just under the chin and piled it up within 15 feet of his feet. I doubt if the attack was ever recorded anywere because no one was hurt. I am sure that I could come up with the fellows name for confirmation if I needed to come up with it.

Pepper spray is a joke buddy. Critters (both two and four-legged) can do plenty of damage before being “incapacitated” by pepper spray (some never are). We were sprayed in training (pepper spray training requirement) and had to attempt to disarm two “assailants” and point a dummy handgun at another and go bang, bang when on target. Usual lapse time to be effective: 20 seconds. A long time, it’s amazing what can be accomplished when seconds count.

There certainly have been a number of cases where handguns have been effectively used to stop bear attacks, both grizzly and black bear.

He'd better carry an oar too, in case of rabbit attack.

I’m sure the left would have this guy wait for some Ranger to help him out in case of another bear attack instead of packing heat!

It worked for that “Grizzly Man” in Alaska! Oops sorry, he and his girlfriend were eaten.

Both men lived, but were badly mauled. Both attacks occurred near Meteetsee, WY, near Cody. I do not know if they got a shot off, or not.

Do you have any idea of the date? Bear maulings are infrequent enough that there is bound to be a record. I’d like to get more details.

Grizz have nasty habit of doing that. I generally smell them long before I see them. I recommend when in bear country walking in the old infantry spread formation - no closer than 20 feet. If a bear attacks hopefully someone can get one off.

A female grizzly bear with two cubs mauled an out-of-state hunter and his guide in a remote region of the Shoshone National Forest near the headwaters of the South Fork of the Shoshone River ...

The two men reported they had been sitting on a hillside deep in the Shoshone National Forest southwest of Cody watching elk through a spotting scope at about noon Thursday when the grizzly came upon them and attacked Willer, ... Hoodenpyle blasted the bear with pepper spray, but the bear then turned on Hoodenpyle, attacking and mauling him...

During the course of the attack on Hoodenpyle, Willer fired two rifle shots at the bear which apparently drove the animal off...

“These people who think that they’re safe with bear spray, I’m here to tell them it’s a false sense of security,” Workman told the Missoulian newspaper this week.

“The spray is better than nothing, but I’ll choose a firearm every time.”

Actually, every year more people are injured and killed by moose than the more newsworthy bears.

Are we talking moose attacks or car accidents? I would think moose attacks would be very newsworthy. I would certainly be interested!

Yeah, I’m talking about moose attacks. Cows with calves are about as hard to get along with as bears. A few years ago one of the Iditarod racers had his (or her, I forget which) dogs stomped so badly by a moose he/she had to drop out of the race. Consider a 1200 pound animal with ver-r-r-ry long legs, each armed with a sharp hoof, coming after you. You’re not going to outrun it so you’d better outshoot it!.
