Showdown for Hillary in John Wayne country
London Telegraph ^ | 30/12/2007 | Tim Shipman in Winterset, Iowa

Posted on 12/29/2007 9:18:09 PM PST by Aristotelian

He was arguably the greatest hero in the history of American cinema, a leader of men who beat the bad guys and symbolised patriotic values.

But here in the birthplace of John Wayne, in the snowy wilds of an Iowa winter, the US is picking another leader - a president to command the respect of modern America and deal with the world's villains, who have swapped Stetsons and Colt 45s for suicide bomb belts.

(snip)

The challenge Mrs Clinton faces is clear in Winterset, where Wayne was born in 1907 at the heart of Madison County, whose covered bridges gave their name to the 1995 Hollywood movie.

At the Wayne birthplace museum, tour guide Glenna Finney, 67, has no time for Mrs Clinton, or the memory of her husband's White House dalliance with Monica Lewinsky.

"The majority of people here are retired and they are Republicans. I don't think they're ready for a woman president. Some of them have a hard time having a female pastor," she said.

"People here expect you to have manners. A decent name is to be treasured. How will President Clinton be remembered? Not for any of the good things he did. Where was his decency?

"There's nothing badly wrong with this good old America that John Wayne couldn't have fixed. It was Mid West values that made him so strong. I'm looking for someone who offers leadership, honesty and integrity."

This piece goes on to cite McCain's re-emergence. It may be onto something there. The polls indicate a failure on the part of any of the GOP candidates to generate overwhelming grassroot support. Now, voters are re-evaluating the field. McCain could very well rise like a Phoenix from the fire. One reason: He's a known commodity.

"The Wayne museum gift shop sells mugs bearing his famous dictum: "Talk low, talk slow and don't talk too much." There is precious little chance of anyone obeying that in Iowa this week."

And that about sums it up...Pilgrim.

Golly, and what would the Duke think of her choice of White House Christmas tree ornaments, while we’re on the subject?

OK. I’ll Let you in on some trivia. My dad made a movie with John Wayne. Even went to his wedding. The movie was The Sea Chase, and it was filmed on the Big Island (Hawaii). My dad knew John Wayne. He knew some of the other stars too. Alan Hale (Gilligan’s Island). And James Arnes. They were all class, and true Americans.

Sorry. Did not mean to make that a brag. Actually meant that to mean John Wayne was a part of my family all the way back to my childhood. Not like he showed up to my birthday parties. Instead, that he has had a profound impact on my family.

There was that Newsweek waiting room June issue magazine with the dippy quote from BJ about John Wayne movies whilst they were aboard the U.S.S. George Washington—at Omaha Beach with the Clintons.

From my discussion with libs here in SoFlo, much of that support is cross-party from democrats. I know a few Republicans who say he's better than nothing, but most of the McCain before all supporters are liberals.

"And next she split the sea..."

You mis-translate from the original Chaldean ... it is,

And next she splhit in the sea...

And of course everyone forgets to learn the next verse ..

So as unto lord algore the truth of persuasion doth cometh and stayeth for to be fortune unto his seed and seeds and seeds to be.

You're welcome ... now let's all get to church and learn the TRUTH.

LOL!

That’s one on my favorite Duke quotes. Immediately following, the Duke busts the guy in the chops knocking him down a very muddy hill.
