Text-message fanatics will have to practice self-control come New Year's Day, when a new state law prohibiting drivers from texting goes into effect.
The Washington State Patrol plans to "vigorously enforce" the law.
...
The new law prohibits reading, writing or sending text messages while driving a vehicle. It does not prohibit entering or selecting a phone number to make a phone call.
The law specifies that texting infractions will not become part of a driver's record, and won't be made available to insurance companies or employers.

And the police do nothing.
Ya think a taser might fuze the olde crackberry?
Cameras soon, like Great Britain?
“New super-cameras will mean no hiding place for drivers who smoke, eat or use a phone”

Cell phone tickets, cell phone tickets, every time I go anywhere some fool using a cell phone tries to get me killed .
>The law specifies that texting infractions will not become part of a driver’s record, and won’t be made available to insurance companies or employers.
Why, that will be really effective...
Why have the damn law at all?
"Revenue enhancement"
These people must stay awake all night thinking up laws to keep the little people in line and to separate them from their money.
From the article:
A similar bill, which will prevent drivers from using handheld cellphones while driving, goes into effect in July.
This is caused by greedy developers, building on every square inch of real estate, yet the road capacities remain the same. It doesn't' take a genius to figure out if your going to build a mega big box store, and put up a 3,000 unit apartment building down the street, that traffic will increase dramatically.
(Long story short: Back in 1991 I had someone run a stop sign and I still suffer the effects of that auto accident and NO they didn’t stop to see if I was alright!)
Hey, let’s all go to Washington and drive through towns while sending text messages to each other. Just for good measure, I’ll bring my electric razor and shave while driving, too.

A text messaging driver killed a 13 year old bike rider in Massachusetts a couple of days ago.The driver has been arrested.
The Boston Globe covered the story but never questioned the fact that the 13 year old was riding a bike at 12:30 AM.Just quoted the grieving mother etc. but no mention of the middle of the night bike ride.
Weird !
“Vigorously enforce” means any driver caught looking down will be pulled over and will have his trunk searched for contraband even if there’s no cell phone. No thanks.
Why have the damn law at all?
Just Trojan horsing their way in. When I lived in WA, they promised that the seat belt laws were just going to be a 'secondary' offense, you had to get pulled over for a 'primary' offense (such as speeding) first.
That said, texting while driving is extremely stupid, and I'd love to see punitive damages attached to any successful lawsuit for injuries received in a collision where the driver was doing this.
A recent news report here in Virginia about traffic deaths had good news and bad news. The bad news is that we may have set a record in the number of highway deaths this year. The good news is that drunk driving deaths were down. The rise was blamed on texting and cell phone use.
If I’m killed by a distracted driver, do I really care if the idiot was drinking of texting?
Yeah wouldn’t it be nice if they’d “vigorously enforce” the immigration laws.
How are they going to know whether the driver is dialing a number or texting? Confiscate the cell phone? Sounds like a B.s. reactionary law.
