Indian intel discounts Al Qaeda hand

NEW DELHI: The Indian intelligence and security agencies believe Benazir Bhutto’s assassination was conceived as a deep, politically motivated conspiracy and carried out by forces within Pakistan, and not by Al Qaeda.

After completing a detailed assessment based on TV footage and other material, the Indian agencies say some elements within the ISI, the Army, extremist groups and even some political rivals may have had a hand in the killing.

“This is not the usual Al Qaeda modus operandi,” an analyst said. The Indian agencies believe the strike was rehearsed and involved several people. “It was a highly planned, highly motivated, highly integrated plan. Otherwise it wouldn’t have happened the way it did,” a senior intelligence operative told DNA.

“It was a meticulous insider job, probably. People would have been bought because massive support is needed do something like this.”

Sources said if the bomber was so close to Bhutto, the vehicle would not have survived the blast, as it did. The bomb was so powerful that the assassin’s head was found some 75 feet away from the site, according to Indian assessment.

They believe the explosives were strapped above the waist of the killer. Indian analysts are not ruling out the possibility of the Army or the ISI being involved in the attack.

hmmm...we’ll see. The motive is there, but whether this is true...remains to be seen. If ever.

Only Desis could understand fellow desi conspiracies.

Indian RAW and Pakistani ISI have a better understanding of each other than CIA or MI6.

Desi = “home boys” (S. Asian natives - indians, pakistanis, lankans, bangladeshis)

You can pretty much discount anything India says about what goes on in Pakistan, and vice versa.

Yeah, the use of a suicide bomber is the part that makes me believe it was a terrorist organization that carried out the attack. As far as I know (and I only know what I read in the papers and on the Internet), no precedent exists for a professional intelligence operative committing suicide as part of mission execution.

But, perhaps I am wrong.

Ofcourse,India’s opinions on these issues are baseless since they know Pakistan inside out-better rely on doing things the way they’ve been done for the past 6 years & see more tax payers money go into the Pakistani army’s coffers.

Why should an Army use one of it’s own for suicide missions??Esp.if the Army in question fathered the Taliban & still backs terrorists against India-both of which regularly strap themselves up to perform fireworks.

If the Army wanted her dead, they would have picked her off with a silent sniper at distance. No one would have known where the shot came from and the shooter could have walked away. You are claiming that the Army wanted her dead and that they also used an extremist to carry out the attack. Definitely possible, but a complex conspiracy.

"This is not the usual Al Qaeda modus operandi . . . [it was a] politically motivated conspiracy and carried out by forces within Pakistan, and not by Al Qaeda."

Kindly old Osama bin Laden would never have done such a thing -- it's got to be that American puppet who did it I suppose.

Like OBL formed Al Qaeda in Afghanistan to serve tea to the Afghans fighting the Soviets years ago?

Assassination of [Afghan rebel leader] Massoud Removed a Potential Key Ally for U.S. : Did bin Laden Kill Afghan Rebel?

Yes! says CNN's Peter Bergen and others. "The assassination was personally ordered by bin Laden." (9 Sep., 2001)

The Osama bin Laden I Know. An Oral History of al Qaeda's Leader By Peter L. Bergen.

OBL didn't like Massoud and he likely did not like Bhutto and her plans.

I support India in her dispute with Pakistan but this is no time for India to be trying to stir up trouble for a man who appears to be a man we trust.

If India means just "elements within the ISI, the Army, extremist groups" which I believe have ties to Taleban / Al Qaeda then why drag "political rivals" into this?

BTW, the same Bergen book reported that Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, a rival of Massoud and a close ally of OBL, stated in early 2001 that the U.S. would attack Afghanistan later that year "and the jihad against the U.S. would continue." What did his bud OBL tell him and did they think that they could dispose of the U.S. in Afghanistan as they had disposed of the USSR?

Well it occurs to me that maybe radical Islam (and possibly others?) are trying to create maximum chaos to sucker us into Pakistan.

Maybe we should wait for the NIE report. Looks like whoever killed her wanted to make sure the sloppy job was done this time. Shooter plus bomb. We should however not jump to conclusions about anything just yet. Have heard about 10 different versions of how she died as of right now. Everyone is blaming everyone else. Creating internal strife seems to be the end result of this assassination and is probably part of the motive.

BTW,it’s not ‘India’ which said this-it’s a bunch of unnamed officials interviewed by a newspaper.

Without a clear understanding of who is firing, that could be one of Bhutto’s security people firing at a threat.

The real problem here is that in many cases — ISI = al qaeda.
