OSKALOOSA, Iowa - Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson often schedules walking tours during stops in small Iowa towns, and he didn't let deep snow change his plans Friday.
Wearing a cowboy hat and leather jacket, Thompson trudged through ankle-deep snow as he made his way around Oskaloosa's town square, chatting with people at a coffee shop and the county courthouse.
"It looks like business goes on even in the snow," he told two people working at computers in the courthouse. "An inch of snow back home and we go to the house."
Earlier at a stop in Pella, Thompson said he enjoyed a chance for one-on-one politics.
"We're going directly to the people and it reminds me a lot of the way we campaigned in Tennessee. It's my kind of campaign and it's my kind of time, that means it's getting down to decision time," he said during a crowded town hall meeting at a coffee shop. "We're trying to figure out a way to meet the most people and be with the people in the most direct way."
The personal approach persuaded Janine Dorenkamp, 33, of Pella to caucus for Thompson.
The mother of three boys aged 7, 4, and 20 months said she was wavering between Thompson and Mike Huckabee until she met the former Tennessee senator.
Thompson's event was held just a few blocks from a similar event for Huckabee being held at the same time.
"I think it really tipped me toward Thompson," she said. "I really haven't heard Huckabee but I've liked Thompson from the very beginning."
She said abortion was her key issue.
"If you respect life then everything else will pretty much fall in place," she said.
In response to a question challenging the validity of starting the presidential nominating process in small rural states like Iowa and New Hampshire, Thompson said there is a positive side to the current process.
"They are a cross section of Americana," he said. "It lets people from the real world and not just the media capitals of the world weigh in and weigh in early.
"I'm OK with that," Thompson said, adding that the Iowa caucuses will "provide the wind to the back of one or more people."
Later in Oskaloosa, Steve Noah accompanied Thompson on the walk along the town square.
Noah, an official at William Penn University in Oskaloosa, said Iowa Republicans appear deeply divided heading into the Jan. 3 caucuses.
"The sense that I get talking to my Republican friends all over the state is that no one candidate has the firm support of more than 7, 8 or 9 percent, which is wonderful," he said.
You got that right!

Almost like it was planned...
Why does the image of a St Bernard pop into my head ...
You go Fred.
Best wishes to Mr. Thompson, and be careful in the ice and show! I hit my head ice skating two weeks ago, and it still hurts!
Drat. SNOW.
Fred’s fund raising goal of $248,846 was met and now the total raised is at $258,329 and still climbing. Glad to see it still going up because after Iowa Fred will need funds to continue on to Wyoming for the 5th and New Hampshire for the 8th. GO FRED!
Fred’s on the move. This terror attack in Pakistan showed Fred has the right stuff to stand and lead this great country. He is the only one who acts like an adult in these trying times.
He’s right about that inch of snow. In Memphis all the grocery stores would be crowded and the crazy drivers rushing home.
OH...I’m feeling something in the air...is that victory?

That is a great look for FRed.
The media is scared to death of Fred and Duncan. That’s why they are never mentioned. They think we will just forget about them.
Notice how the small, local media outlets simply report the story without editorializing or making snarky comments? What a refreshing change from the Democrat-controlled national drive-by media and large city newspapers!
Thank you! Happy New Year everyone! May January 3rd bring us one step closer to FRED and JERI in the White House!
EAGLES UP!
