Vermont town seeks Bush, Cheney arrests

By DAVE GRAM, Associated Press Writer 6 minutes ago

President Bush may soon have a new reason to avoid left-leaning Vermont: In one town, activists want him subject to arrest for war crimes.

A group in Brattleboro is petitioning to put an item on a town meeting agenda in March that would make Bush and Vice President Cheney subject to arrest and indictment if they visit the southeastern Vermont community.

"This petition is as radical as the Declaration of Independence, and it draws on that tradition in claiming a universal jurisdiction when governments fail to do what they're supposed to do," said Kurt Daims, 54, a retired machinist leading the drive.

As president, Bush has visited every state except Vermont.

The town meeting, an annual exercise in which residents gather to vote on everything from fire department budgets to municipal policy, requires about 1,000 signatures to place a binding item on the agenda.

The measure asks: "Shall the Selectboard instruct the Town Attorney to draft indictments against President Bush and Vice President Cheney for crimes against our Constitution, and publish said indictment for consideration by other municipalities?"

The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment Friday. The press office did not immediately respond to an e-mail.

Support for the measure is far from universal, even in Vermont, where the state Senate voted earlier this year to support impeaching the president. Anti-war rallies are regular occurrences here, and "Impeach Bush" bumper stickers are common.

I’d like to see a VT Trooper take on the Secret Service and try and “arrest” Bush or Cheney.

By the way, the last Vermonters that were worth a damn were “Ira and Ethan Allen.”

A massive overstatement. For Example from Brattleboro, Gilbert, Kyle C....06-Aug-2003-—18 others in Iraq.

I haven’t, but I took a girl on a date recently who is originally from Vermont and it turned out she was rather conservative. Wonder what she’d say if I mentioned this story to her on date #2?

Jacksonville, FL has a bigger population than VT. It’s a beautiful state, but I’m afraid the trust fund babies from NJ, NY, and Conn. along with the other weirdos outnumber the good solid Vermonters who used to inhabit the state. STFU VT, NO ONE cares what you think.

The people are the ahole of the U.S. Actually, they are generally very friendly and good people. They just happen to be socialist/communist.

Honestly! Don’t they have actual work to do? What the hell are they being paid for? Not for this!

I’ll tell you what . . let’s “diversify” their community and ship about 10,000 illegal immigrants there and give them really something to be upset with Bush about.

You nailed it. I've always said that Vermont is a paradox. We used to come down from the camp in Jamaica to Mass at St Michael's on Sundays and the little girls would be wearing their communion dresses to church services ... I always thought that was odd as a kid, but my mother explained to me that the working class people there were practical and made good use of the garments. Yankee thrift.

No hunting trip was ever complete without a stop at Sam's for free coffee at 4AM ... I loved being among the men in their red and black checkered wool shirts and red suspenders with pistols on their hips. Then came the hippes .... Brattleboro has been infested with them since the 60s. Anywhere two hours from Boston has been, Nashua NH area included. Dad was infatuated with Vermont ... the abundant game, the beautiful mountains, playing checkers around the pot belly stove of Muzzy's general store swapping hunting stories. He told tales of going up Rt 30 and using boards to drive over the washed out roads to get to the camp.

I saw the ski areas flourish with consortiums of investors, the chalets and now condos/time shares. There are still folks who are deeply conservative in the backwoods, but they are vastly outnumbered now, by the Ben and Jerry's crowd.

Last fall I took a nostalgic drive on the dirt road Albany Turnpike from Jamaica to Manchester, past the site of Daniel Webster's famous Whig speech supporting "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" on the backside of Stratton Mountain ... 15,000 delegates who traveled by stagecoach, horseback and on foot to hear a political speech. Come on 15,000 people in the middle of no-where!

I'll always love Vermont in spite of the fact that Kerry beat Bush there in '04. And in spite of their now whacked-out bent. ;)

You are correct.

Their sacrifice for our freedom deserved better than my offhand remark about the Patriots of old.

Please accept my apologies on their behalf.

I hope Bush vacations there extensively and the Secret Service appropriately services all those nougats with the barrels of their big and shiny ones, short and stubby ones, and whatever else it takes. My contempt for this sort of liberal geeks is complete. When you take a provocative stand, you deserve to get a response which will establish definitively whether you are the winner or the loser, and if you are a loser, takes you completely out of play, forever. Harsh words for Vermont will follow later if they have not sufficiently wet themselves.

As an American, I have avoided visiting the states of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire......................

Understand, Retired Army, but if by a quirk of fate you should end up stranded in N.H.-—please look me up!

I guarantee you solace!

If you live on the other side, then you know the best example of what the environmentalist’s vision of the US will entail. It never ceases to astonish me every time I cross I-89 from VT into NH, across the river. On the NH side, literally miles of retail and commercial property. On the VT side, nothing. I mean literally nothing. Pristine poverty.
Do you know the White River Junction area?

I do. Years ago, I used to go to a weldment company who was (Naturally) the Low Bidder for certain parts, to sign off on jobs.

They used to close the place in deer season, since no one including the owner would show up.

This was a long time ago, when hippies were still arriving, and just as they were putting down roots. For example, we had a friend who had graduated from a good college, etc., and one day, she divorced, bought a shack on a Vermont hillside, and settled down to make peasant dresses to sell at craft shows.

I suspect this was the time that was the end of Old Vermont.

It is undisputably a beautiful state, but that was its undoing, as the hippies were attracted back to Nature, formed mating clusters and propagated their LSD-damaged genes.

Let’s make a deal...

If the small towners in Vermont can kick ass on some small towners innnnn....Opelika Alabama (or ANY small southern town), then they can hang Bush.

Otherwise, they need to have a Coke and a smile and shut the f*** up!

“I have no desire to visit any of the Marxists states above either.”

Your loss I’m afraid. I live on the rocky coast of Maine and of all of the places in this great country I have visited, I have always considered this to be one of the most beautiful.

Brattleboro can’t figure out how to make it illegal to be nude on the public street but they can figure out how to arrest the president of the US.

What a lovely place.
