Mary is contrary in politically correct year - (Christmas song about Mary deemed ‘too religious’)

For decades, children have enjoyed singing about the little donkey which is said to have carried the pregnant Mary to Bethlehem.

But one group of young singers was ordered to change the traditional lyrics of the Christmas song - because they were said to be "too religious".

Instead of "Little donkey, carry Mary safely on her way", the youngsters were told to sing "carry Lucy" for fear of offending non-Christians. The incident, at the school's Christmas concert, appears on a new calendar alongside 11 other examples of extreme political correctness from around Britain.

February tells of warnings from lawyers that Valentine's Day could lead to sexual harassment claims in the office. In 2006, Manchester-based Employment Law Advisory Services warned that just sending a card to a colleague could backfire because it could constitute an "unwanted sexual advance".

Other examples of political correctness taken to absurd extremes include the teachers at one Scottish school who banned children from cheering for their team on sports day - in case those who came last felt humiliated - or their counterparts at Maney Hill Primary in Sutton Coldfield, near Birmingham, where parents were not allowed to attend sports day at all, to spare their children from embarrassment if they lost.

August tells of officials in Blackpool who were deployed to ensure donkeys working on the beach had a full hour off for lunch in accordance with European Union rules. October details an event to mark the bicentenary of the Battle of Trafalgar on the Thames during which the actor playing the military hero was forced to wear a lifejacket.

Last September, during Ramadan, the NHS boards in Greater Glasgow and Lothian were reported to have banned staff from eating at their desks to avoid offending any Muslims who might have been fasting during the month.

The illustrated calendar appears in the Second Politically Correct Scrapbook, compiled by the Campaign Against Political Correctness (CAPC).

John Midgley, the co-founder of the CAPC, said: "The Politically Correct Calendar quite clearly shows the effect political correctness is having on all of our lives. Perhaps we should all - especially our politicians and bureaucrats - resolve to be a little less PC in 2008."

The calendar is available from the CAPC website: www.capc.co.uk.

I’m way past being saddened. This is worse than an attack, it’s an unnecessary surrender, a signal to the enemy that we are prepared to abandon our faith.
Some would say it’s a trivial thing, but each trivial gesture hastens the extinction.

This is tiresome.....what would happen if these same people in America began to call Charlie Wrangle on his insane tax schemes or Senator Clinton using her disgraced husband to further her power plays with lies or William Jefferson still not behind bars because he is a Democrat. There are so many issues that affect the nation....even though this happened in Britton, it is happening here in the US also. What should be private opinion about religion is made a national complaint....well it rarely if ever is. So get a life Politically Correct and leave the rest of the world alone.

Uplift or "cross your heart" bras could readily be considered an unsolicited sexual advance ~ on the other hand, simply having large breasts cannot.

A case involving the USPS and an employee who filed a complaint about his supervisor not disciplining a female employee for "displaying large breasts" (albeit behind several bras, camisoles, shirts, and jackets), ended up being tossed by EEOC and I believe the MSPB as well!

Makes me want to stand up and speak about how Political Correctness, isn’t. There is nothing correct about anything the proponents of PC say and do.

Christians all over the world can stop it in it's tracks just by not bowing to PCer's whims. Where's the faith in God to put a hedge of protection around those who fight for right?

Is it so hard for parents to simply tell their children to sing it the way they want anyway? I mean the Doors did that on Ed Sullivan ("Girl we couldn't get much higher...") after promising not to, why not kids at school? I would so instruct my kids, and if they suspended her, I would spend every penny I had to sue them and make as much as a fuss as possible until the cowards relented.

I’m still trying to figure out who could possibly be “offended” by the Christmas story.

Maybe it's not such a big deal.

Just borrowing from an old tradition.

Maria was just a latin nickname anyway.

Her given name was Miriam, just like Moshe's sister.

Of course, the mention of a Hebrew name would really have set off the PC crowd.

You are correct, MGG.

I remember an old saying about faith, and here it is:

“For those who believe, no explanation is necessary; for those who do not believe, no explanation will do.”

Isn’t it extraordinary that anyone could find a song about a little donkey carrying the Blessed Mother offensive?

Honest, I’m trying not to be judgmental, but when I see a story like this, it is a real test of my Christian patience.

This is but one more example of why the UK is doomed. They are already behaving like the vanquished in an occupied country.
