So ...they are not the least bit curious about the intruder. No,their main inquiry seems to be why the homeowner was not a dutifully compiant sheep waitng for the butcher’s knife stroke.

To the Seattle Times reporter it is unheard of for a homeowner to own a gun.

What an awful ending. What with Christmas and all, it will be at least a week before they can get the damage repaired.

Police > Crime statistics
Crime statistics
The FBI Uniform Crime Report (UCR) is a common measurement of the Crime Rate. Law enforcement agencies throughout the United States submit monthly statistics on Part 1 crimes to the FBI. This report was designed to gather reliable criminal statistics that law enforcement agencies can use to identify crime trends and develop strategies to address those trends.

It's unknown why the homeowner had a handgun, Because Washington state has a decent concealed carry law, despite the best efforts of those ninnies at the Seattle Times?
To: Horatio Gates
Washington state is very liberal, but the citizens have a very broad authority to use deadly force:
RCW 9A.16.050
Homicide By other person When justifiable.
Homicide is also justifiable when committed either:
(1) In the lawful defense of the slayer, or his or her husband, wife, parent, child, brother, or sister, or of any other person in his presence or company, when there is reasonable ground to apprehend a design on the part of the person slain to commit a felony or to do some great personal injury to the slayer or to any such person, and there is imminent danger of such design being accomplished; or
(2) In the actual resistance of an attempt to commit a felony upon the slayer, in his presence, or upon or in a dwelling, or other place of abode, in which he is.

It's unknown why the homeowner had a handgun, Petersen said. Okay, let me help you with that. Try this: He was a free citizen of a still moderately free country.
