What a great ship to be on. Everything worked, the chow was outstanding and the squids let us watch TV in their area after hours.

I never saw a sailor in the weight room, I was told they had their own. I was also told it had a wet bar and a bowling alley and that the officers served the drinks on Friday nights.

My son, a Marine, was on the USS Austin (it was leak’n but wasn’t sink’n) - told us the most fun was “table surfing” in a storm. I have no idea but it soes sound like something a Marine would do.....

I spent MANY months in the Arabian Sea on the USS Tarawa many years ago.
She's a fine ship...at least after they fixed the plumbing.
It was once a pretty gross place to live in high seas. 28ft draft for a 40k ton vessel...flight deck 90 ft above the water line. They forgot to put one-way baffles in the sewage lines at construction...

When I was on the Tarawa in the early 80s the "climate room" was just fore of my quarters.
We used to be amused by the fact the jarheads would wait in the chow line every moment they were out of the rack (hot racking...even though they were stacked four tall for "cargo").
We'de go to the front of the line:)
Damn, I sure miss those days. I miss my marine buddies too...even if they were a little up tight lol

The bowling alley is beneath the reefer and forward of the shaft alleys by the chain lockers.

Merry Christmas, keep your head on a swivel, God's speed and may you come back to your family safe and sound. I know that would be the greatest gift of all.
I will say a prayer for you and your brothers this evening.
