Pat Buchanan himself may be backing Ron Paul, but some of his former staffers are backing Fred Thompson. Heres an email sent out by Pats Iowa campaign director from the 1996 race:
To all my friends,Fred is a free trade guy who fully supports the mission in Iraq so its a bit surprising to have some of the paleo-conservatives on board, but its nice to have them regardless.First, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, but for those of you who live in Iowa, I need not tell you that in little more than a handful of days - the weather permitting - we will make a monumental decision at our Caucuses: who leaves Iowa with the chance to gain their Partys nomination for President, and all that means to the future of our Country.
Because I sit on RPIs State Central Committee, I have emained neutral in this years Caucus process, but now I feel compelled to join with the likes of: Cong. Steve King, Bill Sailer and what appears to be the entire Iowa leadership team of Tom Tancredo, Representatives Kraig Paulsen, Jeff Kaufmann and Sandy Greiner, and scores of other notable Iowa Republicans in endorsing the candidacy of Senator Fred Thompson.
Rather than spelling out the reasons I believe Fred is the right man for the job, Ive attached a short paper from Cong. Steve King that lays out those reasons more eloquently than I can.
Please take the time to read the attached document from Steve, but I would like to make one very important strategic point before you do. Senator Fred Thompson does NOT have to finish first at our Caucuses, but he does need to finish Third and you and I can help make that happen.
Because this is such a special Season I will not be making phone call, because like you I want to spend this time with my family, but if Cong. Kings message makes as much sense to you as it does to me, PLEASE email it to your friends and family over this Holiday time.
Urge them to support Senator Fred Thompson on Caucus night.
Warmest Regards,
Loras Schulte
In about 10 days we’ll know the outcome and find out if the endorsements help Thompson any.........
“his former staffers are backing Fred.” Yeah the few who had half a brain or more. Pat is like a broken clock. He’s right twice a day, but not at all, other than that.
Where does it say that Pat is backing Ron Paul? He is a friend of his and Pat likes his foreign policy stances but I never heard of an endorsement. He also likes Romney.
Clock's are consistent as is Pat.
Pat is focused and consistent however maybe a bit too much when it comes to politics.
I don’t care if Buchananites are backing Fred.
I’ll still vote for him.
;-)
So much for my consistent comment.....
Wishy washy perhaps is a better definition of Pat.
conservatives of all stripes are beginning to consider the impact of a Huckaee win in Iowa and realizing that it’s time to get behind the only electable conservative who remains in the GOP race.
I would think Buchanan would be for Ron Paul. They share a lot of the same goofy policies. Especially regarding the war on terror.
Source? I thought it was Huck or Romney.
It’s funny that this post shows up today. My husband and I were just talking about many of our friends who we knew in our pro-life work who are evangelicans, and were wondering who they may support in this year’s presidential race. Would they support Huckabee we wondered? But we remember that in the 1996 race, they were all behind Buchanan, which surprised us because we figured that Evangelicans would never support a Catholic. But they were more interested in his stand on the social issues, which abortion dominated that year. I think that in Iowa they will support the true conservative in the race, and not back Huckabee just because he is more in tune with their religious beliefs.
Loras is a great guy. All of these guys are extremely conservative. Way to go, Loras!!!
Fine with me if some of the Buchananites are supporting Fred!
Religions don’t seem to matter much. What does matter is that Fred and Hunter are the only two conservatives in the race.
I know that and you know that, and the great majority of FReepers know that. Let’s hope that the majority of primary voters know it as well.
