PHOENIX (AP) -- Police in suburban Scottsdale have begun routinely asking for proof of citizenship from every suspect they arrest and turning those who are in this country illegally over to federal immigration officials.
The procedure was started Oct. 15, a result of the September killing of Phoenix police officer Nick Erfle by an illegal immigrant, Erik Jovani Martinez.
Scottsdale police had arrested Martinez on a misdemeanor charge 16 months earlier but they released him then because they didn't know he was an illegal immigrant who had been twice deported.
Erfle's killing ''caused us to look at what were asking suspects,'' Scottsdale police Sgt. Mark Clark said. ''If we arrest someone and then find that we called ICE (Customs and Immigration Enforcement) and they put a hold on them, then we know they have been deported and are back again.''
Martinez was later killed by police after he stole a car and took a hostage, authorities said.
Now police in the affluent suburb ask every suspect about their citizenship, have ICE agents pick up those who are in this country illegally, and keep a database of possible illegal immigrants in case they turn up again.

Believe it or not there are people who think Alaska is a foreign country. Not only is that level of knowledge fairly common but if you have encountered airport screeners you know the type who will give you a pile of crap just because they can.
You make a valid point.....and a valid reason for mass deportation.
The real crime, is that we haven’t been doing this for the past 30 years in EVERY city and state....

Things must be getting slow down at the old police station. The newspaper story makes this procedure sound like another make work program to me. If as the story states: "Scottsdale Mayor Mary Manross supports the policy change and said that because every suspect is asked about citizenship, police are not engaged in racial profiling."
I often go about my business without carrying anything whatsoever that could be used to identify me, much less prove what state my allegiance is to. It is a rare day when you find me with more than three dollars in my pocket, because almost all of my purchases with the exception of sundry items are made with a credit card. I do have a drivers license because the state sends me one every 5 years for a small fee, but that is in my billfold which sets on the kitchen counter for weeks on end.
I have a question, could any of you tell me what papers you carry to prove your allegiance is to the United States? I do have a birth certificate certified by the clerk of the county in which I was born. Perhaps my DD-214 might be used to establish my allegiance.? Maybe I can use my High School Diploma or how about a transcript of the grades I received while attending college.? Perhaps you would be satisfied if I produced printed cards attesting to my membership in such organizations as the Boy Scouts, the Elks, or the Marine Corps League. I don't carry any of those things with me and I might have to search awhile to find several of them. What do all of you carry?
I have been living in this country for the best part of a Century. During all that time I have never been asked for proof of my citizenship. I fly the Stars and Stripes on a pole right outside my front door, and I am Infuriated with the very thought that anyone especially one of our elected officials would have the audacity to question my citizenship.

Cops have no other defense against becoming the main target of organized crime. Cops must make it clear that NO ONE can come against them or their families.
We should let them have this protection because if the cops ever become the the first targets, then ordinary citizens will be easy pickings. We must give the warriors a way to continue on.
Otherwise, we will become a third world country just like Mexico . . . hmmm . . .
If not for the ridiculously PC attitude of the lefties, I would think that, in most cases, it would be pretty obvious as soon as someone opens their mouths.
For the rest, they should be honored to be able to prove they are here legally.
Having lived abroad for many years, it was obvious that I was from ‘somewhere else’. And while I was never stopped on the street and asked for ‘papers’, I DID have to prove I was legal before I could drive, apply for a job and attend educational courses.
That is the way it should be.
I have sat in the border crossing points in Europe while the jackbooted thugs made us wait just because they could. Usually the submachine guns were out of sight except for the American guards. Do we have it in us to stop people in the street and ask for papers?

And one more thing...
Before I was given ‘leave to remain for an indefinite period’ (Legal residency) I had to sign sworn oaths that I would never, ever be a drain on society. I could work, go to school and all the rest. But, I was not ever allowed to collect welfare or any other government handouts that were bestowed on the citizens of the country without first becoming a citizen.
I think that has changed now, I moved back to the USA in 1996. But, at the time, I had no problem promising that I would not move in, drain the system and not carry my own weight.

Along with your valid; wood cutting permit, hunting license,fishing license, campfire permit,and your hiking permit!
Yep, we hunt, hike fish and camp alot, and yes, we have been stopped and had to show them all at once!
Huh? Your guilt or innocence isn't in question. When you're arrested for committing a crime or misdemeanor, you'll be asked to prove that you're legally here. If you can't prove it and your English isn't fluent (I added that because nobody will admit to any “racial profiling"), then they contact ICE to find out who you are and what's your record.
If you're here illegally, you'll be deported before or after a trial and sentencing for what you did.
What I ment was that even if you are a US citizen, you can help by having a BC/GC copy in your wallet, thus helping the cops clean up the neighborhood of illegals.What is the big stink about it anyways?
I have to carry my DL, SS card, Nursing license and CPR cert because any facility I’m in can ask for proof that I am.....who I say I am. If I constantly have to prove I’m legitimately a nurse with a valid license to visit my patients....plus wear a photo ID at all times.....why should they whine about carrying id?
