FRED THOMPSON'S disappointed fans have something to cheer about at last.
After sinking to single digits in the polls, the former "Law & Order" actor is making a comeback.
Over the past month, Thompson has walked away from several very strong performances in GOP debates. In the latest one, he held command over the entire field and won the day by refusing to play "hand shows" on stage at the direction of the moderator.
"I said, 'Nope,' and everybody pulled their hand down and looked around," Thompson later recalled.
"I just said to my buddies up there, 'How are you going to stand up to the leaders of Iran and North Korea if you can't stand up to an overbearing moderator?' "
Thompson also has quietly racked up scores of endorsements from anti-abortion chapters around the country. Those groups are some of the most effective vote herders the GOP has.
And earlier this week, he netted a surprise endorsement from Iowa Rep. Steve King, known in some GOP circles as "the Kingmaker."
After enduring months of criticism for sporadic and lackluster campaigning, Thompson is now going full-bore on a bus tour of 50 cities and towns around Iowa that his campaign says will reach some 75 percent of projected Republican caucus-goers before Jan. 3.
More than anything else, long-suffering supporters say their spirits have finally been lifted by Thompson's swagger and enthusiastic demeanor on the trail.
After someone suggested he might still be the conservative dark horse to ride to the White House, he quipped, "Saddle me up!"

I sure hope King’s endorsement is as influential as people keep implying.
I would love to see Huckster’s support dry up and transfer to Fred.
Me too!
[I’m counting the seconds before the usual suspects hit this thread with the “Fred runs a lousy campaign” slogans and the “You Fredheads are your candidate's worse enemy” posts.]
:-D
This is definitely the show that we were looking forward to. I’m looking forward to seeing the fresh polling after Christmas.
...make that “worst enemy”. My fatigue is showing.
Fred’s been sandbagging, letting the “frontrunners” expose themselves and beat each other up, and the “establishment” GOPers and (of course) the dying, socialist “mainstream” newsrooms fell for it like Charlie Brown. “President Thompson” - - I like the sound of that.
I’m looking forward to that, as well. We are in the eye of the storm right now during Christmas, but I think a lot is happening under the radar.
Oh, it will be. Believe me, with Elvis's endorsement Fred has this thing wrapped up.
We’ll see. It’s going to take Fred some time to change the perceptions he’s allowed to build up. Time he may no longer have.
I will be loving it if he can keep it up.
Glad to see the energetic campaigning finally! It’s encouraging to his supporters.
I just sent him what I could afford. I pray he makes great gains.
True, but I'm glad that he's now pro-life and anti-illegal-immigration. He really needed to change those and now that he's done so, he's hitting them strong. :-)
Glad to see the energetic campaigning finally! Its encouraging to his supporters.Hmmm. Fred waited to finally put in an effort between Christmas and New Year's, the time everyone stops paying attention. And then immediately after is the caucus. More bonehead "strategy" if you ask me. Fred has a bunch of fools for a campaign team. They've actually been keeping him away from the media, and keeping him in the dark. He definitely needs to fire some people... and perhaps a divorce.
I’m with Fred, but I can’t make any excuses for the gross missteps the campaign made. Everything was lit and running when the campaign finally made it’s OH-SO belated announcement that Fred was in the race, and then... The campaign listened to bad advice and ran extraordinarily poorly.
I have no idea where Fred was in November - The Fred I know was completely MIA and some cardboard cutout attended many of the debates.
Now, they’re finally back to running a campaign and Fred’s back as well. But they left the door open for the Huckster to walk in, and that was a huge shame on the campaign’s fault.
Hopefully it’s closed tight and there won’t be another strolling in behind.
That's for sure! He needs to be able to show he can be competent at running a campaign before a country, and choosing competent campaign advisors/staff before choosing a cabinet.
Finally!!!!!!!
In *some* circles he is known as a Kingmaker? Talk about a vague, generalization! I live in Nebraska (right next to Iowa). I'm pretty politically active and I've never even heard of this supposed *Kingmaker* before!
I do agree that Thompson did well in the last debate. Very well!
Actually Elvis has endorsed Duncan Hunter! lol
Well I’ve gone from Romney to Fred hope that helps.
