Roman Catholics have overtaken Anglicans as the country's dominant religious group. More people attend Mass every Sunday than worship with the Church of England, figures seen by The Sunday Telegraph show.
Blair becomes Catholic in private ceremony The changing face of British Christianity Your view: What can the Church of England do to win back worshippers? This means that the established Church has lost its place as the nation's most popular Christian denomination after more than four centuries of unrivalled influence following the Reformation.
Last night, leading figures gave warning that the Church of England could become a minority faith and that the findings should act as a wake-up call.
The statistics show that attendance at Anglican Sunday services has dropped by 20 per cent since 2000. A survey of 37,000 churches, to be published in the new year, shows the number of people going to Sunday Mass in England last year averaged 861,000, compared with 852,000 Anglicans worshipping.
The rise of Catholicism has been bolstered by an influx of immigrants from eastern Europe and Africa, who have packed the pews of Catholic parishes that had previously been dwindling.
It is part of the changing face of churchgoing across Britain in the 21st century which has also seen a boom in the growth of Pentecostal churches, which have surpassed the Methodist Church as the country's third largest Christian denomination.
Worshipping habits have changed dramatically with a significant rise in attendance at mid-week services and at special occasions - the Church of England expects three million people to go to a parish church over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

“Nope, I would credit Gutenberg for that. He made it all possible.”
And you would be wrong.
Irish monks were copying & preserving the Bible a thousand years before Gutenberg arrived on the scene.
Where do you people come up with such idiotic ideas!!!
Child molestation has NOTHING to do with whether someone is married or single. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO CONNECTION!
molesters and perverts come in all sizes, shapes, sexual preferences and either sex & whether they are married, single, widowed or divorced makes is irrelevant!!!
gezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....
Merry Christmas, fish hawk.
Of all times, this is the time for “peace to men of good will”.
The bad priests have been “outed”—the penalties have fallen on the people in the pews. Sounds a little like Joe Everyman taking up his cross—as Jesus instructed us-—and someone else’s cross as well (which Jesus did for us, in order to set the example for us to follow).
When the hard times of this “priestly problem” of the past 20-30 years is dealt with, and the penalities paid by good priests and good people in the pews, the Church will began again, as it has always done for the last 2000 years.
About every 400 years, the Church meets a crisis, confronts it, and begins a renewal and a new time of re-generation.
I see signs that our 40 years in the desert is coming to a close and once again, we are crossing the Jordan to new life in the Catholic Church.
I am certain that you will live to see it happen, though, for me, I know I am too old now to see it.
But it will come and, when it does, you may have to re-double your efforts in order to paint it in a bad light. It won’t be easy then.
Meanwhile, the Catholic Church has had a long and great history of giving much all over the world for which it never asks credit. It also has a long line of wonderful, faithful, good priests whose daily good works and sacrificial lives never make the headlines or receive any accolades.
Glory to God in the highest and peace on earth to men of good will.
This is a foolish post.
Gee you did so well with post 163 then you spoil it all by posting 164. too bad
Jacobites rule!
Doubtful; the current heir to the Stuart line (currently the head of Bavaria's House of Wittelsbach) has no interest in the Throne of England. Nor has any of the heirs claimed it since the death of Cardinal Stuart.
Is his name Khris Kringle?
Well, if you want to go back that far, yes, but I was responding to the clain that we must “thank the Lord for the Protestant movement so you can have a personal copy of the Bible and have it printed in a language other than Latin.”
Sorta knew that.
Was just being... silly
LOL!... Exactly right... England has worries and it's not the Catholics... Hopefully we are learning our lessons here in the U.S.
Child molestation has NOTHING to do with whether someone is married or single.
Hey there Supergenius. That was my point. I left off a SARC tag because I figured you realized that teachers CAN marry.
See my reply to Fish Hawk in my post #46 - http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1943407/posts?page=46#46
Maybe after reading it you’ll understand what I am trying to say.

well, you figured wrong
I realize you’ve only been ‘round here a couple of years but here’s a clue.
WE DO NO READ MINDS. And there have been those on FR over the years who thought that the problem with priests was that they were not allowed to marry.
Cyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
**I just think they are wrong in their theo**
It was St. Jerome and his translations of the Bible from Greek and Hebrew that gave you the current Bible you do have.......of course, minus the books that were taken out by Luther.
Thanks be to the Catholics for the Bible, inspired word through the Holy Spirit, third person of the Blessed Trinity.
**Become more like the Catholic Church**
Might I even suggest “Join the Catholic Church?”
Do they let teachers marry on your planet? My original comment was that children would be safe if Priests AND TEACHERS were allowed to marry. This was intended as sarcasm since Teachers are allowed to marry.
I don’t expect you to read minds but reading comprehension is definitely desirable. If you develop some perhaps you might have a clue.
My original comment (post #40) was directed towards Fish Hawk due to his comment about Priests molesting little boys.
Do you even realize that you are so busy being an argumentative twit that you don't even realize we share the same point of view!
Have a Merry Christmas.
Just post “sarc” so people will know.
