Helmet Law Protesters to Circle the Governors Mansion
B.O.L.T. of NC ^ | 12/22/2007 | Bikers USA

Helmet Law Protesters to Circle the NC Governors Mansion, with Freedom Rides in 3 other counties on New Years Day.

Citizens who love freedom and want to defend individual liberties are urged to picket the Governors Mansion on New Years Day from 2 - 4 pm.

On New Years Day, the helmet law in North Carolina will be changing to reference FMVSS 218 as its' standard. Motorcyclists have many questions, such as how they can ensure compliance with certainty, because FMVSS 218 is nothing that motorcycle operators and consumers can comply with. It is a manufacturers self-certifying standard. Janice MacKay says, "Imagine the public outcry if the state forced people to take drugs that are not tested by the FDA, or if you had to check federal crash test results before buying your next car, or look up federal standards before changing your windshield wipers." Freedom Rides will take place simultaneously in Catawba, Gaston, and Guilford counties.

Janice plans to go lidless on New Years Day while wearing a "PROTEST HELMET LAWS" vest. The vest, rather than a sign, should show that this is a legitimate, scheduled protest, and the vest should prove just as valid as a picket sign. Janice spent a couple weeks researching the laws pertaining to protests, and case precedence, and says "If I am not causing harm to anyone, not damaging anyones' property, and not promoting insurrection, my legitimate protest using my chosen method of speech/expression should not be interrupted". The laws governing interference of protests clearly state that the government can not regulate what the protest message says.

Protests and "Freedom Rides" are scheduled to take place simultaneously in four counties. In Raleigh, motorcyclists will be circling the Governors Mansion in Raleigh, with sidewalk picketing support from bikers opposed to the helmet laws and modifications to it which go into effect on New Years Day. Libertarians who were denied ballot access by incumbent legislators who want to run unopposed, will be there to picket for fair elections, and will also be there to show their support for bikers and in defense of individual liberties. All citizens who are concerned about too much government involvement in your privacy and personal decisions are urged to bring your picket signs and say "Enough!"

I refuse to give up, and will storm the castle by myself if necessary. It sure would be good if there’s an army behind me. We can WIN this one. We are going to win in the courts!

The day I have to wear a helmet is the day I put my Harley up for sale. If you’re going to wear a helmet you might just as well drive a car with the windows rolled down.

I am a motorcyclist
I do not care what the helmet laws say

Not wearing a helmet while riding a bike
is suicidal

I know first hand what a wreck can do
been there, done that

my helmet kept me out of the ICU
or worse, out of the nursing home

The laws in this regard are window dressing

If you have any sense on a bike
you will have proper equipment
Or you will eventually be a statistic.

Thanks for saying Let the Rider Decide.
You might have been saved, but there are some killed by the government bureaucrats.

I should not be forced to wear a helmet that might be one of 1/2 MILLION in the recalls database at NHTSA that they never tell anyone about. There are still manufacturers selling “DOT Approved” helmets even when they have been recalled. There is no such term as DOT Approved in fact or in law. DOT is perpetrating a hoax on people, and the public just says the bureaucrats know best. DOT does not approve helmets and does not have a list of approved helmets.

Part of the programs planned on New Years is to tell people how to fight helmet tickets. It could cost the state $1.7MILLION if 2000 cases go to trial.

Riding a motorcycle without a helmet is extremely dangerous, but an intrusive legislature is far moreso.

You have your own right to choose, and I have mine. I choose to fight this unjust statute in the name of FREEDOM to decide for myself.

The Lord gives us Free Will
It is no place of mine to remove it
Nor should society

However
Pure, unmitigated self preservation
will direct any thoughtful biker

any one who has been in a wreck
or has seen one
knows that a helmet can be the only thing
between the rider, and coma

Pick one

Joe, I am suggesting that everyone who has a DOT Label use electricians tape over the DOT.

The DOT label is the modern day version of the Stamp Act which started the American Revolutionary War.

My leather helmet was certified by the manufacturer with a DOT on the back of it. The DOT label is just “Better Marketing through Legislation”. The manufacturers self-certify, and the government does not test helmets before they are on the shelf.

The public has no idea. They have heard of all the problems with products made in China, but they have not heard about the fact that we are forced to wear those products. That is why I am inspired to storm the castle. This is not about helmets ... it is our right to decide.

I ask, not just motorcyclists, but all citizens to help say not to government regulation. I just heard they have a bill to force you to use a certain lightbulb. What is next?
Forced medicines? Oh, that tried that in Texas...

I hear ya, I spent 35 years supporting the fight against Florida Helmet Laws.

Which is the only reason I stated the worth of a DOT sticker. :-)

Silent,

Let’s say you are a Senator in NC, and you just found out that the bill you are about to introduce is unconstitutional and goes against individual liberties. It lacks due process because it is vague. There is also testimony that 96% of motorcycle riders prefer to decide for themselves rather than let the government mandate.

You have to decide to make it a law, lacking due process, or stop it. What would you do?

I smacked a deer on my scoot and my helmet saved my rear. That said, let those that ride decide...

Get ready for the flood posts of "Donor Cycles" et cetera, et cetera...

Living in the Soviet state of Washington, we have no choice, even if we carry our own insurance (which I do). I hate helmets!

As you know, the DOT label means absolutely nothing. In 1997, the DOT changed their random testing of helmets (already found in the marketplace) from 200 to just 40 helmets per year, because the helmets had a 67% failure rate. Those helmets that failed are still being sold, and the NHTSA instructs people to continue using them unless they are notified by the manufacturer (often in China or Taiwan) to stop. LOL...such a bad BUREAUCRATIC HOAX!!!!!

Citizens - please open your eyes and figure out that this is not even about helmets. It is about freedoms.

I just call them torture devices nowadays - especially in hot weather. We’ve had mandatory helmet laws in NC for 40 years, yet many states have better safety statistics.
