The White House apparently is so reluctant to discuss the issue of pardons or commutations for convicted U.S. Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean that a spokesman doesn't even want to allow questions about the issue to be finished.
The circumstances arose during a White House press gaggle with spokesman Tony Fratto, when Les Kinsolving, WND's correspondent at the White House, tried to raise the issue of the disparity in the treatment of the Border Patrol agents, compared to that given Scooter Libby, an aide to Vice President Dick Cheney who was convicted of lying during an investigation into the outing of the identity of a covert U.S. agent.
The agents were convicted and given prison sentences of 11 and 12 years for shooting after a self-confessed drug smuggler fleeing back into Mexico after leaving 750 pounds of marijuana in Texas, while Libby was excused from serving any of his prison sentence through President Bush's intervention.
The White House repeatedly has said there is a pardons request procedure available to the agents, even though Libby apparently did not go through the same process before Bush acted.
"A number of times here, when questions were raised about former U.S. Border Patrol agents Ramos and Compean, we were told that there is a process for pardon. And I have a three-part question on this " Kinsolving began.
"You have to make it quick, because they're calling for me," Fratto said.
"I will. Could you explain to us why the president refuses to commute these men who shot an escaping Mexican drug smuggler " Kinsolving continued.
"No," interrupted Fratto.
" as the president commuted the prison sentence of his friend, Scooter Libby," Kinsolving asked.
"No," Fratto responded.

Merry CHRISTMAS!
Agree!
Good post, Leni. Well said.
Bush Buddies get special treatment whenever needed. The Founding Fathers would be gnashing their teeth because of Bush, IMO.
The way Sutton has twisted 18 U.S.C. 924(c) in this case to prosecute the LEO instead of targeting the criminal as was its intended aim ought make ALL LEOs cringe because in its precedence, if they use their service weapon during the attempted apprehension of someone, they subject themselves to litigation and possible prison - right or wrong.
"It has nothing to do with 2AM phone calls. That's the way he is."
These threads always amaze me because Jorge has never been anything except tolerant and differential to mexico and anything mexican. We knew it coming in and there should be no expression of surprise today.
Kind of makes you stop and think when people are discussing things like electability and compromise candidates for 2008.
The president is not acting either compassionately or conservatively on this issue. He is also not listening to the American people.
Perhaps there is a underlying agenda so important as to publicly sacrifice these two men and their families for some hidden reason. But I suspect not.
I have supported the president very strongly in the past but on this issue he is just plain wrong.
I only hope he reconsiders and does so soon. (like today)
He has an underlying agenda, alright: Open borders.
"Congress has passed a bill that cuts funding for the controversial Mexican truck program, but lawmakers expect the Bush administration to keep the foreign vehicles rolling on American roads amid safety and security concerns.
'Nuff said.
Including big talkers Diane Feinstein and Duncan Hunter. As veterans of the game they know exactly where the line is drawn, and won't cross it.
Booosh can commute the sentences of drug dealers but not Compean & Ramos?
That’s “Chicken excrement”
No fence, no deportations and no pardons for Compean & Ramos; the Mexicans apparently have pix of Boosh in some compromising positions.
Congress hasn't concluded there might be a problem in its wording nor that self-serving DA's would reinvent the statute to mean the unintended.
It takes a LONG time for things to "click" in Dense City.
Prediction for this time next year: GWB will pardon numerous criminals (some of them of the particularly nasty variety), but the two border agents who shot an armed drug smuggler will remain in prison.
Barbara must’ve had a hell of a time with him at six.
I have wondered if one of two things are at work here.
1. Bush is hoping for the appeals court to overturn the convictions and then tell Sutton to forget another trial. Just let it go.
2. Bush is letting it play out in the courts in that a commutation or pardon will never “clear” the agents names. Namely, if Bush took action there would always be a question with the two agents reputations. This path will also leave the door open for any legal actions by the agents for any compensation???
Two years ago a liberal friend of mine stated that he wanted Bush impeached....
My response was, "Why impeach him...? He is singlehandedly destroying the Republican party?"
Being a conservative Texan, it hurts to admit that Bush may be the reason for the demise of the Republican party and the greatest country in the history of mankind.
He is singlehandedly destroying the Republican partyNot singlehandedly. There are a lot of RINO's in the herd.
